new
species.Bodyblack, rather short, ovate, moderately elongate; fresh speci-
mens somewhat
pruinoseon the underside; head black,in front two small, white spines converging, behind them alittle black spur bent forward; at base of head between the eyes two other short white spines; buccula? a little distended, yellowish, the edgesomewhat
up- turned, uniseriate; rostrum yellow, reaching to the middle of meso- sternum; metasternumtransverse,flat; antenna?slender, thetwobasal joints dark yellowish, both together about as long as the fourth, whichis black toward apex; the third joint yellowish-white, nearly threetimesas long as theterminal.Thoraxblack, finelypunctured; anteriormargin andthe hood whit-
ish, the latter small, short, and oval, a little depressed near thetip with a sharp, black keel at top; lateral
membranous
marginsnarrow;white, withtwo rowsof small cells, atbase a fewnervuresblack; the triangular portion ofpronotum toward apexyellowish, reticulate; the three carinsevery feebly raised, whitish, uniseriate, continuing over thewholethorax.
Elytraovate,
somewhat
elongate, considerably longer than the abdomen, feebly rounded near the base, moderately sinuate just behind the middle and rounded atapex; discoidal area and subcostal dark yellowish, or blackish with the nervures black, closely reticulated; the basal and median partof costal marginstranslucent, entirely white, with two rows of some largecells; abroadblack band across thecostal mar- gins before the middle; the elytra toward the apex and the sutural area infuscated, except FIG-

fly in our regions, butdown
tothe present timewe have been
ignorantof the conditionsunder which
it livesand under which
its larvadevelops.
I
have been
able to prove that this larva lives as a parasite inthe generalbody
cavity ofAllolobophorachloroticaSavigny
.My
firstobservationswere made
at thebeginning
ofNovem-
ber,
from
materialcollected in thegarden
of theLaboratory
of Evolution.At
this time the larva lodged in the general cavity ofthe genitalsegments
or in theinterior of the seminal vesicles of theworm,
is transparent,and
hardly a millimeter long.The
larva bathes in the liquid of the general cavity ofthe host; it stays there allthrough
the winter,and during
that periodgrows
very slowly. Itsspiracles are probably closed.A
single individual of Allolobophora chloroticacan supportfrom
one to four larvae.Very
oftenby
the side of the living larva are to befound
the debris of a destroyed larvae, either the skinand
themouthpieces
or simply themouthpieces
alone,and surrounded by
amcebocytes.The ensemble
is constituted ofbrownish
masses,which
in- dicate a reaction ofthe hostagainstthe parasite. It iseasyto follow all the stages of this trouble.The
living larva is firstsurrounded by
leucocytes,which form
several layersand
render the larva completely motionless. If thisgang
ofamoebocytes
is pulledaway,
the larva, formerly motionless,commences
tomove and
to travel.Other
larvaehave
sur- vived thebeginning
of akind
of digestionby
the leucocytes.These
arealways
spotted with yellow granulations.One
findsthe
brown masses
with the debris of larvae eitherin the seminal vesicles or in the general cavity of the genital seg-ments
or in the general cavity of the terminal segment.From November
