A PROPOSED DIVISION OF THE PHYLUM ECHINO- DERMATA.

Many
attemptshave
beenmade
toelucidate the interrelations between the variousechinoderm
classes, butnone
of the pro- posedarrangements have
been able to stand thetestof critical investigation. Ihave
recentlyshown
that addition to the ambulacral post-radial series of ossicles in the crinoids takes placeby
the interpolation of ossicles between the firsttwo
(the firsttwo
brachials of the freearm) and
the radials("
interpo-lated division series"); each division series of
two
ossicles represents/Wr
ambulacral plates asfound
in the urchins;two
fuse,
forming an
axillary,and
onedisappears, itsproximal and
distalarticularfacesbeing therebyprojected
upon
eachother,fus- ing,and producing
thenon-muscular
articulationsbywhich
thecomponents
ofdivision series oftwo
ossicles(orof thetwo
pairs in caseswhere
the division seriesareoffourossicles)are united.The method
ofambulacral increaseis, therefore, similar in the crinoidsand
echinoids. In addition, the crinoidsadd segments
monoserially at theextreme
tip oftheir longand
slenderarms.It has been supposedthat this increase
was comparable
to thatofophiuroids
and
asteroids, butin reality it ismerely
a distant analogy, for in the asteroidsand
ophiuroidsthe plates areadded
biserially at the
end
ofthearm,
but justproximal
to aperma- nent
terminal plate.The
ossiclesup
toand
including the sec-ond
brachial of the undivided crinoidarm
are strictlyhomolo-
gous tothe entireambulacral seriesinan
urchin; theremainder
ofthe freearm
represents theauricles ofthe urchin.A
criticalcomparison
oftheanatomy
ofurchinsand
crinoidsshows them
to be closely related,
and
very different in almost everyway
