Leaf blades very narrowly triangular, filiform, 28 cm long, 9 mm wide, lax vestit with small white pustulate-based hairs with gland tips, ciliate with similar hairs up to 5 mm long. LEAF ANATOMY (Hatsch bach 30I90).-Surface view: Hair: multicellular, tufts of hair on both surfaces.

Mesophyll: 1 or 2 layers of slightly elongated palisade cells followed by 4 or 5 layers of rounded, densely packed cells; few with thickened walls. Two phloem units lying laterally in flanges of short Y-shaped abaxial dragons that extend to abaxial epidermis.

Barbacenia cum‘flora Goethart 8c Henrard

Barbacenia fragram Goethart 8c Henrard

Leaf blades reflexed and persistent or deciduous along a regular transverse line, not spotted, even or nearly so on the adaxial side. Leaf blades subterete (together with each side semiterete), 1-2 mm wide, 12-25 mm long, stringy, mostly regularly deciduous: furrows absent or very small, vascular bundles 6-12; caudex slender and mostly branched (ericoid); stamens 6 (Vellozia section Xerofihyta Seubert in part; Xerophyta auctt. in part). Leaf blades distinctly flattened, more than 2 mm wide or more than 25 mm long, or usually both; furrows usually strong on abaxial side, vascular bundles mostly more than 12; caudex mostly stout; stamens mostly more than 6.

Ciliate leaf blades; sheaths hairy; ovary obconical, glabrous: spongy tissue constituting almost the entire mesophyll. Ovary covered with numerous rounded ribs; leaf blades reused, up to 6 cm long; sclerenchyma under abaxial epidermis almost continuous. Leaf blades completely hairy, 1.5 mm wide; adaxial surface clearly ribbed, grooves small, large translucent cells above vascular bundles.

Section Radia

Covers heavily exposed; stems thin: leaves erect, soon deciduous; translucent radial cells over ridges and furrows. Ovarian glands are underestimated or very quickly and widely; perianth tube 70-80 mm long; leaves-blades appressed-short-ciliate at the base; translucent cells on both ridges and furrows.

Underlying rounded cells packed with sclerenchyma fiber strands; below this are 2 or 3 layers of large, thin-walled parenchyma cells. TYPE.-Bisbiri near Diamantina, Minas Gerais, to the adaxial epidermis is a layer of thin-walled, Smithsonian Contr. Two or three layers of translucent cells radially arranged over vascular bundles and furrows.

Underneath the adaxial epidermis are 2 or 3 layers of thin-walled parenchyma, heavily interspersed with sclerenchyma fiber bundles. Underneath the abaxial epidermis are 1 or 2 layers of thin-walled parenchyma, alternating with sclerenchyma fiber bundles; below is a layer of thin-walled parenchyma. Three or four layers of translucent palisade, arranged radially above vascular bundles, grooves and the entire area above the midvein.

Beneath the adaxial epidermis is a row of bundles of sclerenchyma fibers interlaced with a few thin-walled cells. One or two layers of bundles of sclerenchyma fibers under the abaxial epidermis followed by a layer of thin-walled rounded cells. Mesophyll: 2 or 3 layers of large, translucent palisade tissue followed by narrow, compactly arranged cells present on either side of each vascular bundle.

Underlying adaxial and abaxial epidermis are 1 or 2 layers of sclerenchyma cells followed by 1 layer of large, thin-walled parenchyma cells. Mesophyll: 4 layers of small, thin-walled palisade cells followed by 22 or 23 layers of equally small, densely packed, rounded cells. Capsules with a row of tubercles on each side as TYPE.-Without locality, Minas Gerais, Brazil, DIsmIBunoN.-Brazil: Minas Gerais: Caldas.

TYPE.-No locality, Minas Gerais, Brazil, DISTRIBUTION.-Brazil: Minas Gerais: Serra do Martius s n (M, holotype; F, photo 18982). Two or three layers of large, translucent cells arranged radially above vascular bundles and abaxial furrows.

Epidermis: cells on both surfaces square to rectangular; thin-walled. tetracytic?, 21 X 12 pm; present only in abaxial furrows. TYPE.-&eep slopes with cut gallery forest and adjacent serrado with intercalated outcrops ca. DIsTRmunoN.-Known only from the type collection. Epidermis: cells square to rectangular on adaxial surface: rectangular on abaxial surface; thin-walled on both surfaces.

Epidermis: cells rounded to dome-shaped on both surfaces: little conical on the abaxial surface, thin-walled. Underneath the adaxial epidermis are 2 or 3 layers of thin-walled cells, alternating with rows of sclerenchyma fibers. Two or three layers of large, translucent palisade cells, arranged radially above vascular bundles, grooves and midvein.

Note: T he paratype specimen differs from the type in certain dimensions which are added to the description in brackets. Also its leaves are more prominently toothed than those of the type. TYPE.-Serra da Lapa (Cipo), Minas Gerais, Bra- D1STRIBUTION.-Known only from the type col- zil, Langsdorfl s n (LE, holotype; n. v.). Mesophyll: 3 or 4 layers of palisade cells followed by compact spongy mesophyll; 3 or 4 layers of translucent palisade cells arranged radially above vascular bundles, furrows and midvein.

TYPE.-About 6 km north of Palacio, Serra do Cipo, Jaboticatubas, Minas Gerais, Brazil, October 1953, Segadas-Vianna 6. Beneath the adaxial epidermis is a layer of small, rounded, thin-walled cells interspersed with sclerenchymal fibers; below this is a single layer of large, thin-walled parenchyma cells. The abaxial epidermis consists of small, rounded, thin-walled cells that are mostly replaced by sclerenchymal fibers.

Stomata: present only in axial furrows: stomata flattened in surface and with a small substomatal chamber, accompanied by few projections from the walls of the furrows. Two or three layers of large, translucent cells arranged radially over vascular bundles and furrows.

Velloria intermedia Seubert

The substratum of the abaxial epidermis is a layer of interlaced sclerenchyma fibers with few thin-walled cells, followed by a layer of small thin-walled parenchyma. Depending on the adaxial epidermis are 2 or 3 layers of thin-walled cells interspersed with large bundles of sclerenchyma fibers of 3 or 4 layers. One or two large vessels present in each bundle, Two phloem units lying laterally on flanges of U-shaped abaxial beams.

Epidermis: cells on both surfaces rounded to dome-shaped; little conical; thin walls; alternating with sclerenchyma strands. Epidermis: cells on both surfaces rounded to dome-shaped: little conical, especially above the midvein: thin-walled. Beneath the adaxial epidermis are 1 or 2 layers of sclerenchyma fiber bundles, alternating with thin-walled cells.

In all sections, a layer of thin-walled parenchymal cells lies beneath the abaxial epidermis. Under the adaxial epidermis there is a layer of thin-walled parenchyma cells: screnchyma fiber bundles are present in few places. Epidermis: cells on adaxial and abaxial surfaces are rounded and thin-walled; larger above the midrib.

Vellozia candida Mikan

Underneath the adaxial epidermis are 2 or 3 layers of round cells, alternating with fiber bundles; fiber strands are also present at the corners of the grooves beneath the abaxial epidermis.

Vellozia aloifolia Martius

Underlying adaxial epidermis are 1 or 2 layers of thin-walled parenchyma interspersed with 1 or 2 layers of sclerenchyma fiber bundles. TYPE.-on rocks in stream below waterfalls (subject to running water), sandstone area 14 km south of Veadeiros, region of the Chapada dos Veadeiros, GoiAs, Brazil, ca. TYPE.-On sandstone outcrop, 7 km south of Veadeiros, region of the Chapada dos Veadeiros, Goiis, Brazil, ca.

Stomata: present on both surfaces, especially in abaxial furrows; stomata flush with epidermal surface; small substomatal chamber present. TYPE.-on sandstone, Cerro Isibukuri, Rio Kananari (realm of Rio Apapori), Vaupks, Colombia, ca. The above is interpreted as a polynomial because the words are separated from the description by a hyphen and the word for capsule is repeated; this would not happen if the last sentence was part of the description.
