of Bison occidentalis areasyetsorarein collections that an additionaloneisperhapsworthy of record.Among some
specimensof recent largemammals
received by the Biological Survey from Charles Sheldon, ofNew
York, is an incomplete skull of a fossil bison,which
seemsreferable toBison occidentalis. Itwas
found by Indiansin the cutbanks
of a small creekwhich
enters the Pelly Riversome
twelve miles aboveSelkirk,Yukon
Territory.The
nasals, rostral region, palate,and
teeth are missing,but the cranium,orbit,and
liorn cores arewell pre- served.Measurements
ofthehorncores areas follows: Vertical diame-ter, 105; transverse diameter, 10"); circumferenceat base, 312; lengthen uppercurve, 22o; lengthonlowercurvi', 2S.t; extentfromtij)totip,660.
The
lengthof thehorncoresis rather less than inprevious sijecimensre- ferredtotliisspecies, butotherwisenoserious discrepancies appear.For
