DIVE INTO DISTANCE LEARNING

WHAT IS

DISTANCE LEARNING?

CONNECT WITH THE BASICS!

Life saver Tips

Dis tance Learn ing Glos sary

Static four: Two to four sites are connected via distance learning and each of them sees the other schools on the video screen. Dynamic Quad: Two to four sites are linked in a distance learning environment and each site has the ability to view every other site in full screen using the VRU (Voice Feedback Unit).

Lifesaver Trip 1

In this distance learning situation, zoo staff can view four schools at the same time, but each school sees the zoo on full screen. Any school can be a content provider if it teaches another group through distance learning lines.

Glos sary of Dis tance Ed u ca tion Ter mi nol ogy

Content producer: the company, group or organization that provides the program content. Broadcast: when a site is not interactive and is just watching the program.

DISTANCE LEARNING SCHEDULING REQUEST FORM

DISTANCE LEARNING DOS AND DON’TS

Dos and Don’ts of Distance Learning

Make sure that the teacher has (or will) prepare the students for distance learning in advance. Even a trained student can be helpful to the teacher who is tempted to listen to the content provider and maintain discipline and order.

Lifesaver Trip 2

If students attend the event without any preparation, money and valuable learning opportunities can be wasted. If a program is interactive, it can be embarrassing for the school if the content provider does not get any feedback.

The Es sen tial El e ments for Dis tance Learn ing Suc cess

This can be done by simply photocopying and distributing handouts from the content provider, or you can get more involved by providing a reading before the event takes place. Even a poorly prepared class is better than no class when the event occurs.

DISTANCE LEARNING TRAINING FORM

WHY USE

Pros and Cons of Distance Learning

There are fewer opportunities for connections - anyone can be a content provider. Some distance learning sessions are better than others (an evaluation form completed after the event can help content providers improve programs; see Lifesaver Tool 3: .. Distance Learning Content Evaluation Form) .

Lifesaver Trip 3

Instant connections (eg classroom in School A connected to classroom in School B) can occur via dial-up connections—advance scheduling is not always necessary.

READING IS A LIFESAVER!

DEAR DIARY, THIS BOOK IS GREAT!

The rest of the journal is blank, allowing students to make their own journal entries. Nancy uses the "No Talk, No Walk" rule—in other words, all students write without distractions for at least five teenage minutes.

Lifesaver Trip 22 Writ ing Top ics

On the back of the diary, the student can decide whether to share it with others. To get her students writing, ten-year-old Nancy takes the advice of her mentor, Ruth Ayres, when deciding which reading method to choose: "If it's bloody, they'll love it!" Twenty-eight years later, the strategy still works.

STUDENTS WHO READ ARE ON THE BALL!

Distribute press releases to local media informing them of the game and reading activities that have taken place throughout the year. This activity can become a nice fundraiser if the game is held in the evening and a small entry fee is charged.

Take pictures during the event and send them to the local newspaper - this is a great advertisement for the school, public library and movie theater. If students submit ten or more tickets, they receive free popcorn to enjoy during the movie.

Note: This activity can be adapted to the school year and students can read at home.
