ABSTRACT

The Main Character’s Conflicts as seen in Safe Haven novel written by Nicholas Sparks

Shella Syaharani 14111100

The aim of this research is to find conflicts of Katie’s character seen in a novel entitled Safe Haven.

To overcome the research question structurally, the writer arranged the literature review by discussing about the theory and approach. The theory that the writer applied is A.J Greimas of Actantial Model. This theory contains six actants. There are subject, object, sender, receiver, helper, and opponent. The writer also uses the concept of conflicts by Michael Meyer. There are two types of conflicts. First is internal conflict and second is external conflict. Meanwhile, the approach, the writer emphasized structuralism approach. In conducting this research, the writer used qualitative method to depict clearly about the research finding. The data of this research are quotations and narration about internal and external conflicts of Katie’s character.

The result of this research described that, Katie has internal conflict and external conflict. Katie’s internal conflict is Katie with herself caused by her desire to start a new life in a safe place. Meanwhile, the writer found there are two Katie’s external conflicts, first Katie’s external conflict with Kevin caused by Kevin’s Attitude and the second with Alex that caused by their relationship.
