The Late 18th Century Romanticism as Portrayed in the Novel of Oscar Wilde The Picture of Dorian Gray

This research is aimed to describe the Romanticism aspects in the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and how romanticism influence the literary work in the Romantic Era. The Picture of Dorian Gray is the novel written by Oscar Wilde.

The novel is considered to be one of the most controversial literary works of the 19th century. The Picture of Dorian Gray represents the everyman who deals with the battle of having to choose a side between good and evil. The Picture of Dorian Gray is a story about the spiritual journey of Dorian Gray, a beautiful young man tempted by the concept of eternal youth and beauty. The writer studied The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde as a unit analysis by using sociological approach by Abrams (2005) and Romanticism theory by Simon Swift (2006). The writer uses qualitative-descriptive analysis as the method of the research. Based on the result of the data analysis, the writer reveals the four aspects of Romanticism in The Picture of Dorian Gray, they are: nature, imagination, symbolism, and real world. Nature in Romanticism portrayed in the form of landscape and environmental scale, The Imagination in Romanticism is portrayed as the ultimate shaping or creative power, The approximate human equivalent of the creative powers of nature or even deity, In the Romanticism, Symbols are the human aesthetic correlatives of nature's emblematic language, and Real world in Romanticism is ambivalent toward the real social world around them, it also include self-control, emotional and personal soulful.
