The following is a brief timeline of the development of the Blended Librarians Online Learning Community. Gilbert came back with a proposal that became a watershed in the future development of the mixed librarian. We have seen a growing lack of clarity about the role of the academic librarian in the future academic enterprise.

I was impressed by the depth of design and development and the end products created. When I was hired, I was one of the first in the country to hold such a position. In the summer of 2004, I was appointed director of the university's Center for Learning Technologies (CLT).

This chapter will introduce some of the basic design concepts that apply to the work of academic librarians. One of the most influential books on design thinking is The Art of Innovation. To enhance their ability to support the instructional needs of faculty, some of the academic librarians profiled in the previous chapter earned advanced degrees in instructional design and technology.

This chapter builds on the previous chapters' discussion of the principles of design (i.e. the ADDIE and BLAAM models) and instructional technology.

Librarianship to Information Literacy through Course

This chapter focuses primarily on the methods (ie, the A_FLIP model) by which libraries can integrate with Course Management Systems (CMS) and Learning Management Systems (LMS). CMS and LMS will be referred to primarily as "learning software" in our discussion of this topic. By offering a convenient and easy virtual service point, the academic library is in a position to take advantage of the resource sharing, communication and assessment tools provided by learning software to enhance the library's instructional capabilities and its role both on and off campus.

Too often, technology is used in an instructional process without design, and this leads to misuse. The wrong instructional tool for the wrong instructional process can be harmful to and prevent the learner from learning. As you read this chapter, think about the different approaches that academic librarians can take.

Management Systems

This would help the librarian gain insight into the composition of the class and the abilities of the students. The tailored approach gives greater legitimacy and relevance to the library and the librarian as essential parts of the research process. The A_FLIP model provides a framework that can facilitate the integration of the library and its services into the courseware environment.

The best benefit of all is the strategic placement of the Library Resources folder next to the Professor's assignment. Top issues for academic libraries : a report on the future task force focus” (Hisle 2002). It hastens or facilitates long-term change; the use of the technology has the potential to bring about change in the teaching and learning process.

When LTAs encourage greater use of an academic library's electronic content, it benefits the entire community. Find out the benefits of LTA and what it will help faculty members achieve. This definition is very vague and most of the literature (Friesen, 2003, Polsani, 2003 and Shepherd, 2000) argues that it is too broad a definition to be meaningful.

To help make DLMs more concrete, it's helpful to take a closer look at one of the aforementioned examples. This type of experiential learning is considered by many to be one of the most effective methods to assist students in the learning process. These include identifying the type in addition to the format of the desired DLM.

The DLM format refers to the technologies it is composed of and used by the resource. Search with identified keywords that relate to the DLM subject or name. If possible, specify and limit based on the format of the DLM you are looking for (i.e. Flash, JavaScript, AVI, etc.).

Moreover, it is important to consider the learning activities of the DLM and decide how to improve it. Furthermore, it is important to know what you are measuring or evaluating in order to determine the effectiveness of DLM.

Online Learning Community

Here we will explore how the BLC contributes to the profession through professional development, the sharing of ideas and the further development of the blended library concept. It is these activities that have allowed the community to grow and the concept of the blended librarian to develop. For example, the authors never met Hope Kandel face-to-face before and during the creation of BLC on the LearningTimes Network.

For example, one of the goals of the BLC is to increase the interaction between librarians and educational designers or technologists. The LearningTimes LOC chat room is another tool available to members of the BLC. The BLC Advisory Board has used the virtual meeting room to conduct some of its board meetings.

The authors set out to develop a way for academic librarians everywhere to engage in the development of the blended librarian. We decided early in the development of the BLC that it would be essential to develop a stand-alone website to serve as a portal for blended librarianship. While BLC is still in the early stages of its growth, the rapid growth demonstrates the appeal of the blended librarian concept and programming types.

We encourage you to be an active participant in the BLC by visiting the website (http://blendedlibrarian.org) to learn more and consider joining your colleagues who are helping shape the future of form the library. Welcome to the age of the user experience, in which consumers measure the value of products and resources by their simplicity. In the age of user experience, the best products have fewer features that can be used by the majority of users without extensive training or documentation.

One of the advantages of clicker technology is that it is relatively easy to use. These are just a few examples of the ways in which our library resources can be used as instructional technologies to support teaching and learning. These selected instructional technologies provide good examples of the types of tools that blended librarians can employ when designing methods to integrate the library into the classroom.

One of the blended librarian's core missions is to integrate the library into the teaching and learning process. In what ways can the Blended Librarians Online Learning Community help you learn more about design thinking, blended librarianship, or any of the other topics discussed in this book.
