ACADEMIC
PARAGRAPH
What is an academic paragraph?
◦ Academic paragraph is one of the types of writing (or paragraphs) that is always present in academic paper such as academic essays and journal articles
◦ Academic paragraph includes a well-
formulate claim, which then followed by a
support/evidence, and finally a link (or how
the evidence is linked to the claim)

CLAIM
Example of claim:
Procrastinators have higher level of stress than non-procrastinators This is where you state your claim or your argument. Do not
choose a claim that you cannot backup with solid
evidence.
SUPPORT
◦
The support part is where you present your evidence to backup your claim
◦
Unless you can present an evidence, your academic writing will not be considered valid
◦
And remember: your evidence needs to be relevant to your claim
◦
For example:
◦
CLAIM: Procrastinators have higher level of stress than non- procrastinators
◦
SUPPORT: Research revealed that procrastinators generally perceive
themselves in negative lights and are self-judgmental. When they
procrastinate, they know that it’s not what they suppose to do. This
further lowers their opinion on themselves, creating more stress (Flett,
Stainton, Hewitt, Sherry, & Lay, 2012)
LINK
◦ The ‘link’ part of your argument demonstrates how well you understand your claim and how well you can use your evidence to back up your claim
◦ For example:
◦ CLAIM: Procrastinators have higher level of stress than non-procrastinators
◦ SUPPORT: Research revealed that procrastinators generally perceive themselves in negative lights and are self-judgmental. When they
procrastinate, they know that it’s not what they suppose to do. This further lowers their opinion on themselves, creating more stress (Flett, Stainton, Hewitt, Sherry, & Lay, 2012)
◦ LINK: This research explains that failing to complete a task ahead of time contributes to the stress level of a procrastinator. Not only because they have low self-worth to begin with, but also because they know that they fail at doing what they are supposed to do
