ADAPTATION ANALYSIS OF DIVERGENT NOVEL BY VERONICA ROTH INTO FILM BY NEIL BURGER

I. INTRODUCTION
Film is one of the media that can be used as a means of entertainment, usually shown in theaters, television and the internet. Movies are useful as a cultural process of a society or a historical process presented in the form of moving visuals, so that people can see the phenomena that are happening at that time through movies.
Movies also function as a provider of knowledge in various fields ranging from academic and non-academic which are educational, inviting or persuasive.
In line with the growing world of cinema, many films present new ways that are presented to the public with different delivery techniques and styles to enjoy life stories. Thus the term film adaptation or ekranization was born. As of late, adaptations are made with the same media, namely from film to film which is adapted into a different version or what is called a remake. Remakes are programs or television films that are re-adapted without changing the characters and the core or storyline. However, film producers do not just remake films, they must first be more interested in the story of the film to be re-adapted and developed again in order to create a plot that is as good or even better than the original film.
Besides adaptations from similar media, adaptations can also be made from different media such as short stories, comics, video games or novels. Movie adaptations of novels have become a trend in Indonesian cinema in recent years.
Novels that sell well in the market are often the first step for the hope and realization of films that sell well in the market. Movie adaptations of novels usually have the same story as the novel, but movie adaptations of novels also get various changes, for example shrinking, adding and varying changes (Enesthe, 1991).
The differences that occur between the film and the novel adaptation according to Eneste, is a creative process that can be performed by the director conducting the addition, subtraction and appearance variations storylines. The assortment of addition,
subtraction and administration of these variations are due to the different medium berween the film transformation results with the novel adaptation, causing a change in function, especially in the story. Assuming the existence of these differences is the object the formal in this study.
The above process appeared on the film Divergent is lifted from a science fiction novel by the same name by US author Veronica Roth recorded to 487 pages. After the novel made into a film, the fact remains that to elaborate storyline that length, the duration of the film Divergent spent 139 minutes. The novel and film is generally tells the story of a girl named Beatrice ‘’Tris’’ Prior who live in a society with a system of distribution of various types of factions according to personality. At a time Beatrice chose to leave the daction of the family and joining another faction which he considers more in keeping with her personality.
Based on the background study above, in this research the writer want to analyze the presence of differences between the novel and the film. By reading the novel then watching the film, the writer can learn that there are differences of adaptation process that occurs.
II. LITERATURE REVIEW A. Ecranisation or Adaptation
Ecranisation is a process or removal or appointment of a novel into a film.
According to Enesthe, ecranisation was white screening. The transfer of the novel to the silver screen inevitably lead to the emergence of a variety of changes.
Therefore, ecranisation also be referred to as the process of change can be shrinking, the addition (extension) and changes to a variety, the explain that the changes that occur in ecranisation are as follow:
1. Reduction
Reduction is the reducting or cutting elements of the story of literary works in the transformation process. Enesthe states that the reduction can be carried out on literary works such story elements, plot, characters, setting and atmosphere. With the process of reducing or cutting it is not all that is expressed in the novel will be found also in the film.
Thus there will be cuts or removal of section in the literature in the process of transformation into a fim.
2. Addition
The addition (extension) is a change in the process of transformation of a literary work into the film form. As well as a reduction in the creation, in this process can also occur in the realm of story, plot, characterization, setting and atmosphere. According to Davies, the filmmakers were allowed to change the duration by adding scenes while respecting the original thing of work.
3. Change varies / modification
Changes varies is the third thing that allows occurs in the process of transformation of a literary work into a film. Variations here could happen in the realm of story ideas, style of storytelling, and so forth. In ecranisation, filmmakers felt the need to make variations in the film, giving the impression of a film based on the novel was not origin as novel (Eneste, 1991). The result of this duration, the director who adapted a novel, modificating parts of the stories that are likely to wordy or less in accordance with his wishes. Besides that, modification usually use to attract the audience’s attention and according to market needs.
B. Novel
Novel is a book that has written in a prose, it set up in anumber of words by an authors who has express their feeling, thoughts, experiences, and their ideas into literary work and try to make writing magnificence and interesting to read.
Novel is a kind of fiction that comes from fantasy an author’s mind and describes invented of people and events at least not real, but it may be true in our life.
C. Film
According to Hornby, film is a series of moving pictures recorded with sound that tells a story, shown on television or at the cinema/film theater. In generally a film has a variety of messages, both the message of education,
entertainment and information. The film is also regarded as a powerful communication medium for the masses to be targeted, because of its audio visual, the image and sound live. With the image and sound, the film is able to tell a lot in a short time.
III. DISCUSSION
This section will explain the various differences that occur in the adaptation work carried out on the Divergent novel into the film. The differences that occur include the reduction of events, additions, changes in variations/modifications.

Marcus begins calling names. The ceremony takes place in an auditorium, where everyone in attendance is seated in sections corresponding with their original fction. Once they choose a faction, the candidates sit in the appropriate seating section.

Christina helps Tris on the train after choosing ceremony and wants to hold her hand then they jump on the rooftop.
Tris and the other Dauntless initiates climb up the support beam of the train track to reach the top and run along the edge in order to get on the train. Tris falls behind but manages to jump on the train without any help where she lands next to Christina. When it comes time to jump, Christina and Tris jump at the same time instead of holding hands.

After the initiates receives a tour of the sleeping quarters, Four asks them to change into the clothes on the beds. Tris tosses her old clothes into a furnace with the other initiates.

IV. CONCLUSION
From the results of the discussion above, it can be concluded that although the Divergent movie adaptation of this novel is relatively in accordance with the source material, there are some differences between the two. The reduction of some events, characters occurred in the film Divergent because those all considered as important or unimportant part by the film director to be shown in the story. The addition of some events and charaters occurred in the film Divergent caused by the director’s interpretation to make the story more interesting. And the last is modification also occurred in some events and setting of place of the film Divergent.
