Neither the tendency towards individualism nor that towards organization can prevail to the exclusion of the other in the final solution of the problem. This will require each individual to be himself, to develop along the lines of his particular purpose, plan, and ideal, just as each member of the living human organism must develop along the lines of his distinctive function. The parallelism goes further, for the development of the self involves the performance of the duties of an individual member to all others, and the unity of all in the performance of actions pertaining to the welfare of the whole.

It is an accepted fact that all mental life is subject to education, not only thought, but feelings and will. Beauty satisfies the emotional side of man's nature—his emotions, which are as much a part of man as his thoughts or his will, and a true sense of beauty should be as much a part of man as his longing for intellectual truth or his conscience in matters of morality. And the more we have this fine inner sense of beauty, the more we will be one with the universe or God.

He cannot be a Michael, Angelo, or a Raphael, but he can so arrange the things of his everyday life over which he has control----the furniture of the place where he lives and works, that it is a will be. Art must be taught to people, and all people, at least from the rich and the great middle class, must be taught while they are still at school, some art subjects. Because the place of art is not in the lives of a few people called artists, who are very often narrow, who studied it at the expense of their everyday development, but enough place in the life of everyone around him able set to make her small. part of the world a pleasant place to be --- not out of harmony, but in harmony with the beauty of the universe and a genuine expression of that beauty as he feels it.

What we think in our highest moments, what we do in the crises of our lives, these thoughts and these actions are the measure of our choice. The foundations for the ideals of the human race are to be found in the perfect sum of our inherited instincts, the instincts which have produced life through the ages. He whose ideals most agree with and most fully embrace the universal ideals of the race is the one who will most wisely choose the Permanent Character.

Heredity may hinder us miserably or endow us richly, for our ideals are determined in part by the ideals of our ancestors. And it is just that nature and humanity should demand that the man with the advantage stay ahead and win the race. It is knowledge that will set us free, and has made us freer over the years.

It has been four years of sympathetic companionship, for we have been one great fat, brothers and sisters under the care of our blessed Alma Mater. Ten years, five years --- a year from now we will say "no" to each other and be completely convinced that it is true. It is the years that still lie before us that must prove the success of your teachings, the value of your influence.

Similarly, the situation in the business world is constantly changing from the methods of production to the methods of sale. A hundred years ago, or even thirty-five years ago, there were hundreds of successful business men in New York who, if brought back today and placed in a modern business establishment, would be at a loss as far as methods of procedure are concerned. ", methods have thus significantly changed in all branches of the business and financial world. They don't seem to realize that every day is a day that means progress in the world.

Change has made the world as we know it for us, and change will have its effects long after. It has evolved man from the inferior creature of prehistoric times to the civilized man you and I know today. To do this, it is necessary to follow the times and, as the world changes, to make sure that it changes with it, with a certain purpose.

Emerson realized this truth and tried to impress it on the minds of his readers when he wrote, “Of no use to the world are those who strive to do exactly what has been done before.” However, he was not alone, as the progress of the world will testify. Others saw the truth and responded, and it is to these men that we owe our being. It is our duty to take advantage of its mistakes so that we can construct a tomorrow that approaches perfection as a limit, always remembering the old adage, "It's always too late to mend."

That night the new arrivals met in a secret conclave, a meeting which could have been opened quite appropriately by a rendition of "'The Wearing of the Green.,. To this end a list was drawn up of the names, and as they were called, each responded by standing upright and trying to appear unconcerned, an effort which in many cases proved a dismal failure. Believing that boldness and strategy would succeed where secrecy failed, the class quietly to the house of professor and mrs.

The first hint the sophomores got about the event was when some of them discovered, to their dismay and annoyance, that there were no freshmen anywhere to be found. Later in the year the class was pleasantly entertained by the juniors at Professor and Mrs.'s house. Using vans, wheelbarrows and other less distinguished modes of transportation, a number of first-year students were able to reach the station before the arrival of the punctual Erie train, but upon pooling their resources it became apparent that there was only enough to cover the cost of two cover.

The main class events of this year were the evening party of the sophomores, a banquet at the home of the professor and Mrs. For them it will always be the embodiment of one of the brightest points in their lives, and the development of those things which will mean more or less in the future, according as opportunities improve. It is impossible to record even a small fraction of the events that will forever remain dear to every heart as they leave their Alma Mater to take their place in the wider world.

We think our golden-haired modern language teacher will have the happiest fate of all, being with our beloved professor at Salem College. The plans of our dignified pastor of the fairer sex are still undefined, but 190~ would prophesy her journey to the west and eventually become the mistress of a rancher's home. For our two class men, whose hearts had received the piercing blows of Cupid before they came to Alfred, we can only hope that their futures will be as prosperous as their pasts.

Our would-be novelist will give up her "How Betts Went to College" series for the more fascinating pursuit. 34;cute little kitten with her sly smile" will be worthy of her position as head of a Girl's Finishing School where she will be a "real mother. The third one, a demure maid, will devote herself all the time to raising of her nephew who is only allowed to eat dishes made at State School, and who is taught to be a craftsman and appreciate the beautiful.

Our friend from the state school, ·who once agrees, is best roasted in his own clumsy electric oven, but since he has overcome this obstacle, he should be able to overcome future obstacles...' Yes , yes ma'an1, yes indeed .". The prophetess who sees the future of others so clearly can only see for herself a country girl assisting in the care of the poultry and the dairy. Certainly, the university graduate stands above the average person without a college education, yet not so far above that nature goes out of its way to make special arrangements for them.

Each self grows from others, what we were before, So what we are each moment depends on the days of the past.

Check out the list of people who are the driving forces in the world today. If one can achieve results, one's ideals are not questioned, and the spirit of the age :;> gives a premium on unscrupulous cunning. The spirit of this new movement has inspired the great philanthropies of recent years; and its doctrine of service is the core of modern thought.

This spirit of service is the great force opposing the cross-materialism of today, and the outcome is still uncertain. Such, my classmates, is the state of the world where we are about to enter a life's work. But we come a long way from a true interpretation of the new life if we try to judge it by the old.

We will also err if we try to measure the old by the standards of the new. Old men see doom before us; they long for the good old days of the past. You who are members of the class of 1909 are only one year removed from these same problems.
