So she watched the child play in the dust, then looked down the road again. In an instant I-letty sprang from her seat and threw a large white sheet over the angry creature's head.
She couldn't remember ever having been in the lounge the day before; it was a nice feeling because she was tired and her head hurt. When you are right there and the inspiration of the new scenes is in your heart and soul, sometimes your pencil catches a glimpse of the beauty and holds it long enough to put it on paper. I spent the winter in Grand Viev1, a very small village on the Waldrew Ridge of the Cumberland Mountains.
It is really on a vast tableland stretching back through miles of forest to other mountain peaks behind, but in front looks out over the valley below and away beyond, where ridge upon ridge of mountain ranges rise into the blue distance and fade into mist of the clouds. After a while you see the dome of the school building and a little later some houses and two shops, one of which is the post office. The school was established by the American Missionary Society, especially for the benefit of the mountain children, but now it also draws pupils from the surrounding valley towns.
Of course, there are all kinds of ideas about the "mountain tribes," but most of the people we saw were respectable in appearance and probably had some education.
Throughout the long hours the king had heard the trees groaning as their leaves and branches were broken off, and several of his own buds were broken off by flying sticks. But the thought of a certain strong and tender love appeared in her pathetic little face as she fought a brave struggle to rise, and laughingly taunted the king with his own losses. A gentle rain shower washed away the leaves of grass and flowers, and the gardener kindly re-covered the soil-faded roots.
After a week of tireless watching and loving persuasion, the King of the Blacks was in despair, for the morning was sultry, and Porcelain Blue sighed as she bade him prosper and think no more of her. A gentle breeze blew and the king was thinking of what to do when the West Wind - the hearty, exuberant West Wind - came and blew the Porcelain Blue right into his arms. Hail, intrepid hero of the north, thou Soul of the magnet, ever drawn with irresistible force to the pole.
Where only you and God have stepped. - Born with a purpose, high and strong, You wrote your name in unfading light, But even more glorious - a noble deed, You gave the rich fruit of your life to other people to pluck and eat.
We may not copy the thing itself in clay, but we may not give our interpretation of it—our expression of ourselves. Close on the heels of form comes color, and in clay we have ample opportunity to express our appreciation of it. S01ne pieces can be conveniently made that can neither be built nor thrown.
Never use analine dyes to apply non-burnable paint or varnish stains. Sometimes the question arises - whether greens and blues, which do not naturally exist in clay, are allowed. If they can be put there by fire, they are, for they are no mistake.
Whatever ails Adam badly, no man could make him sore by saying, when a joke was told, "I've beard that joke before." When all candles are out, all cats are gray, a:p.d. when all the freshmen are out, all the sophs keep watch. There's a time when you're sure to hit your mark, that's when you're not aiming at anything.

The older brother sold his drink at four cents a glass, and the younger at three. Up::>When I asked the smaller boy why he sold his drink cheaper, he received this answer, ''I can't understand mine like that because the puppy fell into it.''M.

We feel, however, that it could be made an attractive feature of the paper, if you would help to make it so. Besides "Pine Needles", we would like to draw your attention to the series of articles that tell about real places, interesting perhaps from historical mystery or as a scientific P,phenomenon. Last month "The Mystery of Muller Hilt" was published and this month, "The Potter County Ice-mine." Are you not fan1familiar with so1ne modern.
The purpose of the paper is to maintain the highest literary standard possible with the material provided, to represent the various college interests and organizations fairly and without bias. The paper desires to be recognized for doing this and to gain a place in the esteem of every student and organization which will assure the publication the support of all. The true use of the sheet - and its whole value can only be realized under the above conditions - is to stimulate the students to greater literary effort, to bring them into closer intellectual touch, to bring about greater harmony between the various interests and organizations to accomplish, to fairly represent the social and intellectual life of the college, to act as a place of exchange of thoughts and ideals between our own college and other institutions.
With great ability for managerial work, he is equally at home as a reporter on N e,vspaper Row, an editor at Fifth Avenue, or a professor at Morningside Heights. And best of all, like many CoJumbia professors, he is always ready and eager to help others.
The book has been supplemented and has been on sale for some time at fifty cents a copy. Allen or interested in her life's work will take this opportunity to secure a sketch of her life and a tribute to her memory.

The night before, a n1ass meeting was held in Memorial Hall and through speeches, songs and cheers, an amount of spirit and enthusiasm was generated that continued throughout the evening among both the players and the students. Every man on the team went to the field in good condition and with the intention of either winning or dying in the attempt. Alfred scored once in each half, while Niagara scored its first touchdown in the final half.
Alfred, Wright, Young, Stillrnan, Greene and Briggs had the greatest success, but every player on the tea1n played hard and the match was won more by team work than by individual play. On October 23, a light second team was sent to Canisteo to play high school there. Although Alfred played well, she could not hold off the heavy live pistons and fine interference of Caniste.

Compared to the previous results, an easy victory was expected, but for some reason things were not as they seemed.

The series of articles in the Targum entitled European Capitals is not only well written and interesting, but instructive. The annual rope rush at Rutgers took place on the plains of Wilson, September 25, and resulted in the complete annihilation of the sophs. The Freshman-Sophomore Rush at Dickinson was presided over by a previous gree1nent by some of the upperclassmen who were referees and timekeepers.
The rush lasted ten minutes and the judges decided unanimously in favor of the sophomores.
