best in A l l e n t e r m , " a c c o r - ding to P a u l Strong, associ- a t e p r o f e s s o r of English, who is on the M a y - J u n e T e r m C o m m i t t e e . Allenterm was A l f r e d ' s own J a n u a r y study p r o g r a m , which was voted o u t of t h e a c a d e m i c c a l e n d a r l a s t y e a r by the f a c u l t y .
The M a y - J u n e Term o f f e r s ten out-of-the-ordinary pro- j e c t s , all of which c a n be t a k e n for c r e d i t . Five of the p r o j e c t s will take p l a c e on c a m p u s a n d the other five o f f e r t r a v e l and l e a r n i n g e x p e r i e n c e s from as close a s N e w York City to f a r a w a y C u e r n a v a c a , Mexico.
S t r o n g e x p l a i n e d t h a t m a n y p e o p l e , especially f a - culty in the liberal a r t s
school, w e r e sorry to see A l l e n t e r m go. As a r e s u l t , t h e y c a m e u p w i t h t h e M a y - J u n e T e r m to help fill the g a p . E v e n though nine out of t h e 10 p r o g r a m s were o f f e r e d by liberal a r t s f a c u l - ty, s t u d e n t s from the other schools within Alfred Univer- s i t y a s well a s from o t h e r colleges, a r e e n c o u r a g e d to p a r t i c i p a t e , Strong said.
T h e r e a r e s e v e r a l big d i f f e r e n c e s between Allen- t e r m a n d t h e M a y - J u n e T e r m . The new a l t e r n a t i v e s t u d y p r o g r a m is not a g r a d u a t i o n r e q u i r e m e n t , a s A l l e n t e r m was. B e c a u s e all of the p r o j e c t s c a r r y a c a d e - m ic c r e d i t , s t u d e n t s who t a k e them m ust pay $95 per c r e d i t h o u r in addition to other c o s t s , d e p e n d i n g on t h e i n d i v i d u a l p r o j e c t s .

Strong said t h a t he w a s n ' t s u r e why t h a t w a s , b u t g u e s s e d it w a s t h e c o m m i t t e e ' s a s s u m p t i o n t h a t not e n o u g h s t u d e n t s would c o m e u p with i n d e p e n d e n t study p r o j e c t s and t h a t it would be too c o m p l i c a t e d to a d m i n i s t e r t h e m .
The t e r m r u n s from M a y 15 to J u n e 25, but not all of the p r o j e c t s r u n t h a t long. The r e g i s t r a t i o n period for the c o u r s e s is f r o m M a r c h 1 until M a y 11.

At the B e r g r e n F o r u m l a s t W e d n e s d a y , David R u d y dis- c u s s e d alcoholism f r o m a sociological standpoint.
His view is t h a t alcoholism is a l e a r n e d behavior, not a d i s e a s e a s it is c u r r e n t l y l a v e l e d . This e m p h a s i s on b e h a v i o r h a s none of t h e n e g a t i v e i m p l i c a t i o n s a s - s o c i a t e d with " d i s e a s e , " or with a n y of the other " s o c i a l p r o b l e m " definitions of al- coholism which society h a s f o r m e d in t h e past: t h o s e of s i n , m o r a l w e a k n e s s , or c r i m e .
A c c o r d i n g to Rudy, " a l c o - holism is a learned social r o l e t h a t is forced upon or a c c e p t e d by d r i n k e r s when o t h e r s question their drin- king, a n d when d r i n k e r s lack t h e p o w e r or d e s i r e t o s u c c e s s f u l l y negotiate ano- t h e r d e f i n i t i o n . " The aim of -his d e f i n i t i o n is objectivity.
He s a i d t h a t although mil- lions of A m e r i c a n s d r i n k , r e l a t i v e l y f e w a r e or b e c o m e a l c o h o l i c s . I t t a k e s a c e r t a i n s e t of conditions (contingen- cies) to p r o d u c e w h a t is called an alcoholic, w i t h o u t which, one r e m a i n s a social d r i n k e r .
" T h e p o w e r to s u c c e s s f u l l y n e g o t i a t e a n o t h e r d e f i n i t i o n "
r e f e r s to one's ability to r a t i o n a l i z e one's b e h a v i o r , or to " n o r m a l i z e " it. A top e x e c u t i v e , for e x a m p l e , m a y h a v e t h e power to drink h e a v i l y , rationalizing it with t h e e x c u s e t h a t he is u n d e r a lot of p r e s s u r e ; he t h u s n o r m a l i z e s his b e h a v i o r .
R u d y c o m m e n t e d on t h e f a i l i n g s of society's p r e s e n t definition of alcoholism as a d i s e a s e . He quoted sociolo- g i s t P e t e r Conrad in s a y i n g t h a t this definition is p a r t of o u r c u r r e n t tendancy t o w a r d
" m e d i c a l i z a t i o n of d e v i - a n c e . " Society is c o m f o r - t a b l e with this label, b e c a u s e it f e e l s t h e problem h a s been p i n p o i n t e d and can then be t r e a t e d .
But R u d y believes t h a t the d i s e a s e definition does not c o r r e s p o n d to reality. Situa- tions m a k e people d r i n k , not an i n h e r e n t sickness. He s a i d
t h a t r e s e a r c h e r s do not even know how alcohol a f f e c t s the b r a i n physiologically.
A n o t h e r p r o b l e m w i t h v i e w i n g a l c o h o l i s m a s a d i s e a s e is t h a t this definition will c h a n g e when s o c i e t y ' s v a l u e s c h a n g e , Rudy said.
F o r e x a m p l e , today we a r e not a p t to call alcoholism a sin, a s it once was called.
R u d y a d v o c a t e s e i t h e r a p s y c h o l o g i c a l label, which c a l l s d r i n k i n g a " h a b i t , " or a sociological one, which c a l l s it a " l e a r n e d b e h a v i o r . "
Both of t h e s e a r e n o n j u d g e - m e n t a l or objective in na- t u r e .
F i n a l l y , in r e s p o n s e to a q u e s t i o n on how one should use this sociological m o d e l to c o n t r o l a l c o h o l i s m , R u d y s a i d t h a t t h e focus should be s h i f t e d a w a y f r o m c h a n g i n g the e x i s t i n g drinking b e h a - v i o r s of so-called alcoholics t o w a r d e d u c a t i o n of p o t e n t i a l d r i n k e r s .
Y o u n g people should be t a u g h t , p r e f e r a b l y in t h e h o m e , how to use alcohol, a n d how not to u s e it, a c c o r d i n g to R u d y . He f u r t h e r s t a t e d , " t h e p r o b l e m of alcoholism in society is not d u e to t h e p r o p e r t i e s of t h e d r u g alcohol, r a t h e r it is due to the w a y s in which we think a n d a c t in r e g a r d to a l c o h o l . "
Society believes t h a t inap- p r o p r i a t e d r i n k i n g b e h a v i o r s a r e w r o n g , b u t it is a p p a r e n t - ly not c o m m i t t e d to c h a n g i n g t h e s i t u a t i o n , Rudy s a i d . " T o m y m i n d , t h e m o s t e f f e c t i v e
c o n t r o l s o v e r drinking beha- vior a r e collective controls;
t h a t is, n o r m s , v a l u e s a n d s a n c t i o n s . " I t is s o c i e t y ' s r e s p o n s i b i l i t y to c h a n g e its n o r m s of a c c e p t a b l e d r i n k i n g b e h a v i o r , by not t o l e r a t i n g or c o n d o n i n g d r u n k e n n e s s in a n y m a n n e r , in o r d e r to- c o n t r o l alcoholism, he a d d e d .

F r i d a y afternoon c l a s s e s will be canceled on M a r c h 16 so t h a t we all can begin the festival with the a n n u a l St.
P a t ' s P a r a d e . Floats based on this y e a r ' s theme and the q u e e n c a n d i d a t e s will cruise down Main Street.
Anyone can be in the p a r a d e by forming a kazoo band and entering the G r e a t Kazoo B a n d Competition.
P r i z e s will be a w a r d e d to the b e s t b a n d s .
After the p a r a d e t h e r e will be a big t r e a s u r e hunt.

In the p a s t the e v e n t h a s r o t a t e d around political, en- v i r o n m e n t a l and c o m m u n i t y t h e m e s .
This y e a r we would like to b r o a d e n that a p p r o a c h to i n c o r p o r a t e all three into one c e n t r a l t h e m e .
I n s t e a d of b r i n g i n g a n u m b e r of outside s p e a k e r s , a s we did last y e a r , our intention t h i s year is to d r a w m o r e on local r e s o u r c e s . This hopefully will f o s t e r a d d i t i o n a l cooperation and i n v o l v e m e n t from the com- m unity.

According to Student Acti- vities D i r e c t o r .-Gary Muck, the x - r a t e d m'ovie " M i s t y B e e t h o v e n " has been re- s c h e d u l e d from April, 1978 to Sept., 1979, following the new policy.
Muck said that the Con- C E P B o a r d , agreeing with Dean M a r s h a l l of the Student A f f a i r s Office, feels t h a t t h e r e should be a " b a l a n c e d p r o g r a m of movies shown. A C o n C E P s u r v e y conducted in the b e g i n n i n g of the school y e a r indicated strong s t u d e n t s u p p o r t f o r p o r n o g r a p h y m o v i e s . According to Muck, a b o u t 500 AU students proved t h e s u r v e y a c c u r a t e by a t t e n d i n g one of the t h r e e showings of " D e e p T h r o a t "

Search For Equality
A lot of people would like to believe that things are
"looking up" for women in our society. With the equal opportunity employment acts, the E.R.A. and Title IX, it appears to some that women are finally getting their share. I would suggest that it is precisely a time like this that the needs to be looked at closely, and
We would like to inform our readers of a change that will take place during the second half of the semester. Although we have been dedicated to the weekly publishing of a newspaper and all its advantages, we are not going to be able to continue weekly publications. We are both seniors, and need the extra time during second half of the semester for academic pursuits.
Since a weekly paper can't deal with the most current
"news items" in any case, we feel this will not hinder the quality of our newspaper. On the contrary, with bi-weekly issues, we can guarantee our readers lengthy, well put together newspapers. Maybe it will take them two weeks to read it! We hope this doesn't ^disappoint our readers, because it is with their encouragement and support that the paper has become what it is.

The fact is the issue is far from being solved. All the instances of women gaining positions of power close to those of men involve situations where men have allowed women to participate, and it has been regarded as their privilege to do so.
The world remains essentially a mans world, women maintaining a separate place within that world. One of the biggest hindrances of the women's movement has been this acceptance on the Dart of women and men of the idea that women must reject their feminity to become recognized as successful individuals.
Women are still regarded as subservient to their male counterparts; as a "second sex." The roles women have traditionally performed have not been given the status and power the male roles have. When a man does the dishes, for example, Ir is thought to be doing the woman a favor, while if the woman becomes a lawyer, she is being granted that privilege. People need to think past the traditional stereotypes to experience life at its fullest.
People cannot seem to reject traditional ideas of static roles, but can only look at role changes as a woman adapting to the man's role or vice-versa. Delving into the complexities of human nature is a difficult task, and it's easy to stick to static role definitions.
This breakdown of the rules has made people extremely afraid. Everyone is apprehensive of such fundamental changes in their role conceptions. Acting out of fear, people cling to the role models of their childhood. It is this fear that must be overcome, and the roles rejected.
'Therff exists a fundamental irony here. That is, in this society, the role model of power is that of the male. The symbol for achievement is synonymous with that of the male, yet the strongest human ties formed are those between parent and child, specifically between mother and child. It is through the mother that one first learns the power of physical warmth and tenderness, understanding and sacrifice. These are essential values of humanity that have to be realized if people are to live together in a world of change. In times of crisis, when we need arms to hold us, we reach out and get instead walls of stereotypic roles that separate us.
Men and women have to reject the notions that divide them into separate roles and behavior patterns. They must embrace those common bonds of humanity like those existing between mother and child. Men as well as women must be able to accept the nurturing,giving,sacrificing role of the mother. As long as the man's world arid the woman's world remain separate, there will be two fighting forces of humanity, and there will never be equality.
