AN EARLY WEST VIRGINIA POTTERY.

The
firstpotter
atMorgautown,
afterthe
Indians,whose shards are scattered
inthe
richalluvium of the
valley ofthe Upper Mononga-
hela,
was
calledby
hisapprentices "Master" Foulk. Of him nothing more can be
learned,nor
cajithe date
of hisenterprise bo
fixedbeyond
thatit
was before
1785,neither do any
of hiswares
exist atthe present day.
In the period of settlement between
1758,when Thomas Decker arrived
atthe mouth of the creek that bears
hisname, and
1786,when Morgantown was incorporated, there
is little tochronicle beyond the events incident
tothe early
frontier,such
asthe
establishingof
fortsand the
fightswith the Indians,
inwhich David Morgan stands out prominently
asa remarkable
figure inborder warfare.
About the year
1785,James Thompson, with
hisson,John W. Thomp-
son,
then 4 years
old,came from Bel Air, Maryland,
toMorgantown.
They
settlednear the Dorsey
fort, severalmiles south of the town, because
inthose days of
Indians,panthers,
wildcats,and
bears,every- one wanted
tobe near
the fort.Later they moved
toMorgantown, and,
asfamily
traditionhas
it,builtthe
fifthhouse
inthe
place.John was apprenticed
to"Master" Foulk, the
potter,learning the trade and succeeding
toFoulk's
business.This pottery was probably the
first establishedwest of the mountains, and arose from the increasing needs of the settlements growing around the
frontier forts, soremote from the seacoast markets and almost without roads and
transportation.Early
inthe nineteenth century,
domestic;pottery, which had been hauled
allthe way from Baltimore,
soldon the
frontier at 3levys a
gallon,equivalent
at thisday
to72
cents.This was another inducement
tosupply the demand on the
spot.Moreover, the extensive deposits
ofQuaternary

in geologicaltime with the formation
of thegreat
glacialdam
across the Ohio near
Cincinnati,furnish abundant and superior material for pottery making.^
There was
alsoan
earlymarket for the wares
ofMorgantown, and a great part of the product
ofthe pottery was
sent in keelboats and
tiat-boats
tovarious points down the Monongahela above Pittsburg and
intothe "wilderness."
The stoppage of intercourse between the United
Statesand England during the Administration
ofThomas Jefferson worked hardship upon the growing country,
asyet depending
largelyupon foreign nations
formanufactured
articles.However, the
restrictionson trade and intercourse
ofthe embargo
actof 1807 paved the way
forindependent manufactures
inthe United
States tosupply home demand and mark
the Ijeginning
of
that industrialenergy which has
led to industrialsupremacy. At
thisperiod many small manufactories were
started, asthe
glass factory (1807) ofAlbert
Gallatinand the pottery
ofAlex. Vance
atGreensboro, Pennsylvania
(1809).During the war
of 1812, asWilliam Boughner, of Greensboro, Penn-
sylvania,informs me, the yellow glazed
.warewas
ingood demand and brought
ahigh
price.He
instances thatcups and saucers
sold at a dollarthe
set. It willbe seen
thatagain the
cessationof commerce with England cut
off'the supplies of wares
ofthe
qualitynot made
inAmerica and stimulated the small
potteries tomanufacture
articlesfor
table use.Previously the wares were
ofthe commoner forms for domestic
use,such
asmilk pans, preserve
jars, jugs, etc.Unfortu-
nately,no examples
ofthe tableware of 1812
survive,but fragments from the
site ofthe
oldpottery show that
itwas a good quality of earthenware covered with
alustrous yellow
glaze.The Vance-Boughner pottery
atGreensboro, Pennsylvania,
contin-ued
toproduce
lead-glazeearthenware up
to1849; one
ofthe
latestspecimens being shown
inPlate

at that place.The

ironpan formed the
basisof
liis lead glaze;other materials had
tobe brought long
distancesover the mountains.
On
ever}^hand there was
callfor the inventive
spiritinthe potter
and
skill inhandling
allsortsof
toolsand doing odd
jobs. Ifa
toolwas needed there was nothing
tt)do but
tomake
it;brushes of human
liair
served for decorating the ware;
bitsof
stickwere whittled
intomodeling
tools,or
objectsfrom various
sources,ifthey had the proper form, were pressed
into service.Clay was
tobe dug and worked
inthe rude
mill ofthe
potter'smaiuifacture, the masonry
kilnwas
tobe
laidup, and wood hauled and chopped with which
toburn the ware.
In the "shop" abounded evidences of the potter
asjack of
alltrades;the wheel, the
pieces ofwood held
inthe hand for forming the
vessels (Plate 8),the
slippump,
carriersfor removing the green ware, molds, stamps
(Plates 0-18),and many other things that he had made with
hisown hands. A picture of the resourceful handicraftsman's
labora-tory and workshop
inthe period of independent trades
is fullof
interest.Also the products have an
individuality that isdenied
tothe products of cooperative
labor,though the
latterbe more
intouch with
art ideas difiused atthe present
time.The
firstware made
atMorgantown was porous
terra-cottacovered with
ayellow lead
glaze.Teapots, cups and
saucers, dishes,and other tableware were turned
out.Unfortunately, no specimens of
thisware remain, but fragments from the
siteof the
oldpottery show
its character.Following
thiscame " red ware," or
terra-cotta,covered with
trans-parent
lead glaze.At
thisperiod
(1800)a number
ofglazes began
tobe
used,such
asdark-brown
lead glaze,black iron or manganese
glaze,
gray "china
glaze,"greenish-gray and white, the surviving specimens being
interestingand
beautiful.They show decided
artisticmerit
inthe glaze and a quaintness of form
that ispleasing and well worth the study
ofmodern
ceramists.Lead glaze wares went
intodisuse on account of a
beliefthat such
glazesare unwholesome, which
is true. Itwas observed,
also, thatthe preparation and
firingof
leadglazes had a bad
effecton the
healthof the
potter.With the disappearance of the ware having
alustrous glaze there ended
amost
interestingperiod
ofthe pottery
atMorgantown, The
traditions
and training that had given form and character
tothe
artduring more than
fifty -fiveyears and produced
resultsthat were com- menda])le could not survive
theintroduction
of heav}',unresponsive material
likestoneware, which was produced
in thesecond
period.In the second
period,by the mixture of
clays,securing the
fusil)leand
infusibleelements which stand high heat
inthe
kiln,stoneware

tobe made. This ware was rudely decorated with bhie on the
paste, slipped inthe
interiorwith "Albany
clay,"^and glazed
inthe
kilnwith
salt.The method
ofglazing by
saltwas introduced
into Staffordshire in1690 by two Germans from Nuremburg, named
Elers. Itwas
experi-mented with by Wedgewood, but proved
unavailable,and
felltouse for common ware.
It isprobable that the
first saltglaze made
in thiscountiy was
atMarcus Hook, New Jersey.
On the
closeof the
firstperiod of the Morgantown pottery and the death of the aged
potter,John W. Thompson, following a few years
after, hisson Greenland Thompson took charge of the work.
Greenland Thompson was a singularly
retiringbut well-informed man. Under better material conditions and surroundings he might have advanced
tothe manufacture of
finerwares under the demands
of
modern
taste.Within
his limitations histemperament was
artisticand
appreciative.The idea which he carried out
instoneware was the
applicationof natural forms
in relief tothe exterior of
vessels.The specimens of
hiswork
inthe
IT.S.National Museum
consistof a small cream pitcher with an ornamentation of rose stems,
leaves,and buds; a flower vase covered with impressions from the
shellof the Brazil
nut, allof heavy ware,
softgray
in color,and glazed with
salt (Plates 6, 7).More pretentious
pieceswere made by
this potter,consisting of large garden-flower
vases,the holder decorated with rose and other
floral designs,and the base representing rounded
river pebbles,or cylinders imitating
treetrunks with vines clinging
tothem.
Vases
of thischaracter were not made for
sale,but may be
consid-ered
asthe pastime of the
potter,and were intended
aspresents
to friends.A small trade was, however,
carriedon
in children'sbanks,
pipes, fat-lamps,
etc.,but the standard product of the pottery was
crocks, jars, jugs,
and other desiderata for the housewife. The only decoration applied
tothe
saltglaze ware consisted
ofrude
floralorna- mentations
in cobalt.One of the most
interestingspecimens of early
saltglaze ware of Morgantown belongs
toMrs. Linnie
Dille,of that
place. It isa jar,bearing the following brush-work

pottery.The work of Greenland Thompson was not appreciated
at itsvalue and was
scarcelyknown outside

inthe topforthecork,andaquill thrust in the neck. In painting, thebottle was filled with slip

the perforated stopper inserted.By
the closingand
openingofthe apertureinthecorkwiththeforefingertheslipwasmade
toflow atthe pleasureof theoperator. SlippaintingwasprevalentinEngland
in the lastcentury,and some
remarkablepiecesarestill in existence.The
