Therefore, in order to improve students' speaking ability, the researcher used Media Handout in the learning process. Furthermore, one of the media to increase students' speaking skills is the Learning Media Handout.

We hope that the use of the learning media handout can improve the speaking skills of the eighth grade scouts at SMP N 4 Metro. Can Learning Media Handout improve students' speaking skills and their learning activity among eight classes of Scouts at SMPN 4 Metro? Based on the formulation problem, this research aims to improve the students' speaking ability and their learning activity by using the instructional media handout in the eighth grade scouts at SMP N 4 Metro in the academic year 2018/2019.

The use of Learning Media Handout is expected to improve students' speaking skills and learning activity. Accordingly, the researcher is interested in conducting the learning media handout to improve speaking skills.

Furthermore, in this regard, Jones (as cited by Eviyanti) states that speaking is a form of communication, so it is important to convey words in the most effective way.7 Shumin argued that speaking a language involves more than knowing the linguistic component of a message and developing language skills; therefore, it needs more than just grammatical understanding and vocabulary memorization. This means that the timing of the language and the rhythm are created according to the position of the accent within a single word or group of words, e.g. According to Douglas, the types of speaking students in the class can be divided into 5 types.

Grammar mistakes are common, but the speaker can be understood by a native speaker who is used to dealing with foreigners trying to speak his language. It is accessible to students in the workshop and can be built by the students themselves if they encounter technical problems that require inventive solutions. Second, Phill Race argues that more handout material can be made available to students than they ever could have written for themselves during college.

But if handouts are to be used as a tool to support active learning, they must become an integral part of the learning process by designing them to promote activity and interaction with the topic and content of the handout.15. If possible, organize the schedule at least a week ahead so that the end of the previous session can be used for handouts for the next one. Based on the above definition, the author concluded that handouts are paper or electronic materials of learning media that are given to students before, during, or after teaching sessions and can be used by teachers to deliver information or learning materials to students in a concise and clear language. goal.

As well as enabling the lecturer to clarify what will be covered in a session by providing an overview of what the main ideas and concepts will be. In this case they can list the learning outcomes, a summary of the main topics of the lecture and the conclusions reached. Handouts can also contain copies of all overheads used, providing students with an almost complete record of the lecture.

The only disadvantage is that handouts can create a 'spoon-feeding' attitude to teaching in higher education, because students will realize that everything they need to know is on the handout and that attending the lecture is not essential as long as they can reach. leaflets. 18.

RESEARCH METHOD

Independent Variable

The researcher reviews and reflects on the students' attitude whether it is positive or negative. At the end of the meeting, the researcher gave feedback to the students about the learning process. The researcher gave motivation and informed the students about the activities in the next meeting.

The post-test was done to know how the students speak after giving the treatment. To observe the action of the researcher, the staff member observed the activities of the students. as a teacher, the researcher provided material on Speaking, in particular Questions and Opinions, using Media Handout. From the result of pre-test and post-test I, we knew that there was an improvement in the student's result score.

After the pre-test was done, the researcher gave the treatment to the students in cycle I. From the result of the students' score in pre-test and post-test I, there is an improvement from the score of the student. From the result of the students' score on post-test II, it could be concluded that the scores are improving.

This table should describe the comparison of the students' result in pre-test, post-test I and post-test II.

Research Location

Subject and Object of Study

  • Object of Study

The object of this research is the students of Scout in the eighth grade of SMP N 4 Metro especially in Group A and Group B. One of them interview with the teacher, the result of teaching-learning English in this class is lower than the other class, especially in the process of learning to speak. The object of study in this research is the improvement of students' speaking ability and their learning activity.

Classroom action research means that the teacher can know what the problem is in the class and find the solution to solve the problem.

Action Plan

  • Cycle II

During the observation, the researcher must be able to analyze the learning process, the students' activities, the material and the result of the action. So that is the reason why the researcher used Media to improve students' speaking ability. Based on the result of the pre-test score, the researcher has identified and found the problems after receiving the students' pre-test score.

Data Collecting Technique

  • Test
  • Documentation
  • Field Note
  • Observation

Data Analysis Technique

The researcher conducted a pre-test to know the speaking ability of the students before giving treatment and it was used as a comparison score with post-test. However, most of the students' scores were improved even though the state of the learning process was uncontrolled enough. It aimed to know the students' speaking ability before and after the treatment.

In addition, the teacher divided the students from the previous cycle based on their scores in Speaking Ability in the post-test I. Although there are improvements in student achievement, cycle I was still not successful because only 7 students passed in posttest I. It is supported by the percentage improvement of students from pre-test to post-test I and from post-test I to post-test II.

It was clear that the Learning Media Handout could be used to improve students' speaking skills.

RESEARCH RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Description of Research Data

Discussion

  • The Result of Students Learning Activities

In this research, a researcher gave the students pre-test individually to know the students' speaking ability before giving a treatment. Then, analyzing the result of the post-test I, the researcher concluded that there are 7 students, the students passed the post-test I. Furthermore, the researcher analyzed the result of the post-test II and concluded that there are 12 students ( 75 % ) passed the test because they got a score ≥ 76.

Comparison between students' speaking ability in the pre-test, post-test I and post-test II. Based on the comparison table between the students' results, the results of the students in the pre-test, post-test I and post-test II are, in the pre-test 25%. Based on the graph above, it can be concluded that Graphic Organizers can improve students' speaking ability.

Data on students' learning activities are obtained from the students' entire learning activities on the observation sheet. The students' attention to the teacher's explanation improved from the first meeting to the next. Based on the results of the instructional media handout in speaking ability, it can be concluded that students' speaking abilities improve with the use of the instructional media handout among scouts among eighth graders of SMPN 4 Metro.

It made it easier for the students to understand the material so that the speaking skills of the students could be improved. The students are advised to improve their mastery of their vocabulary in order to speak. It is recommended that the English teacher uses Learning Media Handout as alternative media in the classroom, as these media are effective in improving students' fluency in the teaching and learning process.

According to lesson observation, students will be more active after the teacher gives them motivation.

CONCLUTION AND SUGGESTION

Suggestion

The students are advised to be more active in learning English so that they can understand the teacher's material and improve their knowledge, especially in speaking skills. The teacher is expected to motivate the students to get excited about learning English as many students find that English is a difficult subject to learn. It is recommended for the principal to convince the teachers to use these media as it is effective in teaching the material for the teacher.
