The purpose of this research is to know the impact of using serial photos in writing a narrative paragraph. This university thesis is presented as a partial fulfillment of the requirement of the degree of Sarjana Pendidikan (S.Pd) in the English Education Study Program, entitled: "IMPACT OF THE USE OF SERIAL PICTURES ON STUDENTS' NARRATIVE PARAGRAPH WRITING ABILITY".

Background of the Study

Thus, students have low motivation, because they have found it difficult to write what they are going to write. From the above explanation, it can be concluded that the students' ability to write the narrative paragraph is categorized as low.

Problem Identification

The data on narrative paragraph writing ability of the twelve classes of PGRI Senior High School 2 Marga Tiga. Based on these conditions, the author took an interest in studying paragraph writing ability by using serial images on the twelve classes of PGRI Senior High School 2 Marga Tiga in the academic year 2013/2014.

Terminologically, Siahaan said that "writing is a psychological activity of the language user to put information into the written text".6 Then, Barli Bram stated that writing is "to write is to try to produce written messages . Her or his ability is also realized by his or her ability to apply the rules of the language she or he is writing to effectively transfer the information she or he has in her or his mind to his or her readers. .”10. The content of the text may be unclear or confused so that it is difficult for the reader to understand.

Supporting details or examples: This is the part of the paragraph that presents details, facts, examples, quotes, and arguments that support the main idea. A well-written narrative paragraph will appeal to readers because of the writer's in-depth knowledge of the topic and ability to communicate effectively. Second, he or she invents the guiding idea of ​​the paragraph as he or she views his or her main topic in the paragraph.

It is usually the state of the subject, so the common word used to express the idea is by using an adjective. Images in particular contribute interest and motivation, a sense of the context of language, a specific point of reference for stimulus.

Theoretical Framework and Paradigm 1. Theoretical Framework

This means that, if the teacher who uses a media in the teaching of writing, the teacher can motivate his or her student more in the writing learning process. To write a paragraph, it needs a way or the use of media to make the writing process easy. Pictures are a great language stimulus for language production and can be used in any way in the classroom.

The independent variable (X) is Serial Pictures and dependent variable is students' narrative paragraph writing ability. Narrative paragraph writing is the material in English learning that must be mastered by students. This is the skill required for students to produce written work in all their core subjects.

They must turn in reports, narrative and descriptive essays, biographies and other forms of writing required in their various class and homework assignments. Therefore, it is important that they are instructed and given practice activities to develop their writing skills to ensure their success in their school life. The above picture can be explained that if the use of serial picture is successful, it can improve the students' writing skills, so that the students' writing skills are high.

Hypothesis Formulation

This research will be conducted on Twelve Graders from PGRI Senior High School 2 Marga Tiga in the academic year 2013/2014. This research aims to investigate whether there is any positive and significant impact of using serial images. According to Kumar Singh, "population or universe means the entire mass of observations, which is the parent group from which a sample is to be formed"41.

This means that the population is the entire topic that will be assumed in this research. Suharsimi Arikunto defines the population as the entire subjects that are complete and clear and will be the subject of the research.42 The population of this research is the students of the twelfth grade of the senior high school PGRI 2 Marga Tiga. According to Sugiyon, "a sample is a part of the amount and characteristics that a population has".43 This means that a sample is that part of the population that represents the population that we will research.

Cluster random sampling is used when it is impossible or impractical to make a list of the elements that make up the population. The samples of this research are students of the twelfth grade of the higher secondary school PGRI 2 Marga Tiga in the class of social studies, which consists of 42 students.

The independent variable of this research is the use of serial photos that can be defined as media to write a paragraph about narrative photos. The dependent variable of this research is the variable which is observed and measured to determine the effect of the independent variable by having them write the narrative paragraph. Based on the definition above, the writer is of the opinion that the documentation method is the way to obtain the most important data using documentation.

The researcher uses the documentation method to get detailed information about the use of series photos and the ability of students to write a narrative paragraph of PGRI Senior High School 2 Marga Tiga. Test is the series of questions or exercises to measure the knowledge, skill, intelligence, ability or talent that an individual or group has. This test was chosen as the instrument because the students have to express their own idea and determine the scale of the instrument without pictures.

In addition, students write according to their own idea and creativity, which can motivate them to improve their writing ability. After analyzing and discussing the weaknesses and strengths of the teacher and students during the learning process of teaching without explanation and without giving serial images in the pre-test, the researcher will ask the students about the difficulties in completing the task and give more explanation and use serial images until the students they don't understand. This test is chosen as an instrument because it requires students to express their own idea and scale the instrument with serial pictures.

Instrument calibration is the measurement scale that will be used to determine which instrument standard will be used. Moreover, instrument calibration is the screening or examination of instruments made by the writer. It can be deduced that the instrument calibration is the scale of measurement that will be used to determine the action in this writer's study.

In order to trust the data, the instrument being tested must be of good quality. Content validity refers to the relevance of the instrument or measurement strategy to the construct being measured.52 In other words, the instrument would be relevant to the focus of the research. Therefore, the writer used content validity based on the syllabus and materials in the twelfth grade of PGRI 2 Marga Tiga State High School in the academic year 2013/2014.

To investigate whether there is any positive and significant impact of using serial photos on students' ability to write paragraphs, so the researcher analyzes the data using t-test.

Senior High School PGRI 2 Marga Tiga located at Marga Jaya Street, Surya Mataram, Marga Tiga District, East Lampung. Infrastructure of Senior High School PGRI 2 Marga Tiga can support process teaching and learning. So that the existence of infrastructure in Senior High School PGRI 2 Marga Tiga can raise the quality of process teaching and learning.

Narrative Paragraph Writing Proficiency Level of Senior High School Students PGRI 2 Marga Tiga. To know the level of narrative paragraph writing ability of students in the twelfth grade of PGRI 2 Marga Tiga High School in the academic year, the researcher using pretest and posttest. The impact of using serial photos on narrative writing ability PGRI 2 Marga Tiga Senior High School PGRI 2 Marga Tiga High School.

The author formulated the hypothesis as follows: can the use of series photos improve the writing skills of the students of the twelve graders of PGRI Senior High School 2 Marga Tiga in the academic year 2013/2014. Based on the preliminary research, the ability of the twelfth graders of PGRI Senior High School 2 Marga Tiga to write paragraphs was still insufficient. It can be concluded that teaching using serial images can improve students' writing skills in writing narrative paragraphs.

Based on the results, students' narrative paragraph writing ability conducted on the twelve of Senior High School PGRI 2 Marga Tiga in the academic year, the data was obtained and analyzed. Based on the description above, the researcher concluded that there is a positive and significant influence of using serial images in relation to the students' narrative ability to write paragraphs on the twelve at Senior High School PGRI 2 Marga Tiga in the academic year 2013/2014.
