MOTTO AND DEDICATION

If your not annoying somebody, you're not alive.

- Margaret Atwood

It is impossible to not hurt someone. Humans unconsciously hurt others by simply existing. Whether you are alive or dead, you keep hurting people. Getting involved will hurt them, but trying not to get involved might hurt them too. But if it's someone you don't care about, you won't notice you've hurt them. What's important is your awareness of it.

- Watari Wataru, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU

I dedicate this thesis to my beloved parents, sisters, and my friends, who have always been giving their supports, encouragements, and loves.

I LOVE YOU

ABSTRACT

This research is about analysis of speech act of apology strategy. The researcher analyzes the apology strategies phenomenon in the Daredevil First Season (2015) series. The study aims to reveal the direct and indirect apologies and the social functions of the apologies produced by the characters in the series. The research method of this study adhores to descriptive qualitative, with non-participatory observation as the method of collecting data. Then, the collected data is analyzed using Trosborg’s direct and indirect apology strategies theory (1995) and Norrick’s social function of apology (1978). The researcher discovers that both direct and indirect apologies are used by the characters in this series with the direct apologies as the most frequently used apologies strategy. There are also 5 social functions of the apology expressed by the characters in the series, namely showing good manners, showing contrition, asking to be forgiven, getting off the hook, and assuaging addressee’s wrath.
