B. Released
The horror film Saranjana: Unseen City is ready to be shown in cinemas on October 26 2023.
Johansyah Jumberan said that the Saranjana film was based on his research and experience as a native of South Kalimantan. The filming locations and languages used are all pure Kalimantan.
C. Director
Johansyah Jumberan
Director Johansyah Jumberan is a film director and producer. Johansyah Jumberan was also interested in bringing the story of Saranjana to the big screen. As a native of South Kalimantan, Johansyah wants to share mystical stories from his hometown.
D. Plot
This Saranjana film is set in Kota Baru with a super advanced civilization in South Kalimantan. The story begins when a group of musicians from Jakarta are faced with an unexpected adventure while visiting Kalimantan. Unfortunately, the vocalist of the music group suddenly disappeared without a trace.
I like how the first act immediately introduces the conflict of the characters.
Rendy felt jealous of Sitha who was more popular in his music group, which was actually a normal thing because Sitha was a vocalist. Their conflict also brings an interesting perspective about musicians who go beyond their idealism to please their fans, which unfortunately is only embellished.
Unfortunately, the impression that makes this film appear as a general horror immediately appears when the quite loud background sound accompanies the first “apparition” that is presented. I immediately fell in love with the characters who seemed to underestimate the mystery they were facing and Fitri who easily blamed the concert committee for Sitha’s disappearance.
The first half has very minimal horror elements, which makes the film more suitable to be enjoyed as an adventure film. We will be taken to visit a local village to meet smart people who know how to enter the city of Saranjana and a local resident, Midah (Gusti Gina), whose sister was kidnapped by Saranjana residents and never came back. Next, Midah and Anwar followed Fitri and her friends in continuing their mission.
When the characters arrive in Saranjana City, a feeling of disappointment will arise in the minds of the audience. Saranjana only shows it for a dozen minutes. The image that the city of Saranjana is a technologically advanced city is only depicted by CCTV installed in many corners and a control room that displays many thin and changing gadgets. The residents looked like ordinary people with ordinary abilities. This impression was proven when the script showed a chase scene between security officers in Saranjana and the main characters who were considered illegal immigrants. Doesn’t it seem like at least they used weapons or faster vehicles to chase Fitri cs? I think the stake of this film is in the chase incident, which if they were caught there would have lost their lives. It turns out that the climax moment actually comes in the form of a drama that shows the perspective of why selected people like Sitha prefer to
2 E. Evaluation
From the audience’s point of view, subjectively, it can be felt and seen that all the actors involved do not play their characters soulfully.
Their faces look flat, the dialogue sounds normal, every emotion feels suppressed and doesn’t reach the audience. Moreover, regarding the location of the Magical City of Saranjana, which is very little explored, it seems that the poster is just a sweetener and attracts potential viewers.
I felt sorry for watching it, with an opening that felt slow and long-winded, so it wasn’t able to steal the audience’s curiosity. To be honest, the mystical culture that is used as the theme of this film has great potential to be a good film, but in fact, as seen and felt by the audience, the execution of the film to be good actually fails. Actually, this isn’t really horror, because there are few jumpscenes, more of a drama, but again, the audience has already spent money to buy tickets. It requires a film story that is different and entertaining from various aspects, but in fact this film is probably enough to watch once and thankfully many viewers are curious about the title. The film’s score is 3/10. For those who are curious, watch it and feel the sensation.
In general, the experience of watching an unsatisfactory film like this can be a valuable lesson for filmmakers and film producers. Too often we see great potential in a story concept, such as a rich mystical culture, but a lack of proper execution can be detrimental to the end result. In this case, it appears that the film may have failed to fully explore the potential of the mythological and mystical culture that forms its background. In addition, the characterization and acting of the cast are also important factors that contribute to the audience’s experience. Even in films with a focus more on drama than horror, audiences still expect the cast to bring their characters to life with emotion and dedication. With a cast that looks “flat,” the film loses its appeal.
Overall, evaluating a film is not just about criticism, but also about providing constructive feedback. The hope is that future films that deal with mystical cultural themes can make better use of this potential and provide a more satisfying experience for audiences. That’s all and thank you for reading this review.
