MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE

oftheUniversity of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, agroup ofteachers listen to an introductionon
identifying and reportingnew
archaeological sites, but the intense face ofa high school student stands out.The
guest of one of the precollegiate teachers attending the "Archaeology for Teachers" course,Ryan
has a life-longdream—to become
an archaeologist. His excitementshows
as heenthusiastically asksquestionsof thearchaeologist,
who
identifies and describes the projectile points and artifactsRyan
and others have brought to the class.ForRyan,that eveningsortingthroughhistreasured collection of arrowheadsgleaned
from
thefields ofhisfamily'sfarm, willchange and challenge the rest
ofhis life. Since then,
Ryan
has graduatedfrom
high school, is pursuing a college degree in archaeology, and isemployed
inthesummer
with the archaeologicalfieldcrew
atthe University.Not
all stories that have roots in the Mississippi ValleyArchaeologyCenter's(MVAC)
Archaeologyin Education
Program
are as dramatic as Ryan's.But, turning
young
students and theirteacherson
to learning about archaeology, cultivating and nurturing aninterest in the science of archaeology
and
the history of the area's past people, and developing an awareness of and the desire to preserve cultural resources underscoreMVAC's
uniqueeducationaloutreach mission and program.
Mississippi Valley
Archaeology Center
Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center, a private non-profit organization located at the Universityof Wisconsin-La Crosse, conducts research
on
the upper Mississippi River region and educates the public about the scienceof
archaeology and the early people of the region. In addition to itsreputation for high standards in archaeological research,
MVAC now
offers a varietyofways
for the public tobecome
involved in archaeology.These include short lectures,
numerous
course offerings,summer camps
for youth of all ages (kindergarten through high school), family events, laboratory opportunities, artifact identification days, field trips, excavation experience in field schools, and participation in actual archaeological research alongsideprofessional archaeologists.MVAC's Archaeology
inEducation Program
In 1990
MVAC began
a concentrated efforttowards archaeology education for precollegiate
teachers and students and, at that time, created an Archaeology in Education Program. Initially, offering speakers for classroom presentations and civic groups, the
program
included a collection ofbooks
andaudio visualmaterials that teachers and thegeneralpubliccould access. Bringing together that assemblage of materials illustrated justhow
limited, outdated, and/or scientifically inaccurate
much
ofthe area's existing resource base was, as offeredby arealibraries andschool mediaresource centers.Today
theArchaeologyinEducationProgram
offers various courses, informationboothsat conferences around the state, in-service workshops, field tripsandlecturesthrough
which
teachers are introduced to the scienceof archaeology andthe pre-European and post-Contact history of the area.An
"Archaeology for Teachers" course is offered for undergraduate or graduate credit.
Many
ofMVAC's
other offerings(workshops andfield trips) provide clock hours that can be used by teachers towards state relicensing. Field schools and laboratory classes afford the ultimate hands-on opportunity for teachers to participate in actual scientific research and at thesame
time offer concepts theycan useto introducetheir studentstoall curricula areas using archaeology as a thematic focus.
MVAC's
goal for precollegiateeducators is notjust to enlightenthem
about archaeology but to have instructors implement lessonson
archaeology in theirclassroomyearafter year.To
accomplishthis goal, theCenterbelieves that trainingteachers and turningthem
ontoarchaeology is not enough. It isimperative tosupportinstructorsoncetheyreturn to the classroom.
The
Archaeology in Educationprogram
offers a variety of support services includingtwo
Wisconsin-licensed precollegiate instructors with extensive training in archaeology, resource materials, presentations, and a newsletter.The
staffisavailableto helpteachers findresources, answer content questions and provide whatever supportinstructors need to implement archaeology in theirclassroom.Resourcematerialsforuseintheclassroominclude an extensive array of: 1) resource boxes that contain a variety of materials
—
books, videos,bulletinboards; 2)
book
boxes ofvarious typesthat provide multiplecopiesofasinglebook
title along with supportingmaterials; and3) activityboxesthat containallthe materials foran instructorto conduct an exciting hands-on activity session in the classroom. Materials are not all specifically based onarchaeologyandtopics are asdiverse as:Native AmericanArtand Music,The Fur
TradeEra,Rock
Art, and Native
American
Folklore.With
this assortment, teachers can putup
a bulletin board, conduct a lesson or a complete unit, or create a learning center. Students can touch a traditionalwooden
flute or recovered artifacts,wear
an authentic tinkle-cone or jingle dress, grind corn using amano
and metate, and in dozens ofotherways
explorehow
various peoplelived, adaptedto their past environments, and continue today to preservemany
of their traditions. Materials are loanedfora fee for a specified periodoftime;these materialsare oftenbooked
months, even semesters in advance.The
Archaeology in EducationProgram
provides classroom presentations rangingfrom
large grouplecture/slide
shows
to small group hands-onactivities. Several presentations are available for teachers tochoosefrom, oractivities can beplanned to fit individual needs. There are also lab tours, field trips to archaeological sites or excavations, and opportunities for students to participatein speciallyscheduled archaeological excavations and laboratory activities.
The
newsletter, distributed four times throughout theschoolyear, includescontent information, lesson plans (usually designedby
instructors),upcoming
events,
book
reviews, informationon
sitesto visit,and columns recognizing instructors for their participationinarchaeology.
Making Dreams Come True
For many
folks of all ages,MVAC's
educationalprogram
offerings broaden theirknowledge
andinterest not only inarchaeology, but also in
many
other inter-related fields.
For
a group of twenty squirming third through fifth grade students, flashlights in hand, huddled underalow
ceilingof the dark reaches ofadamp
cave observing and learning about pre-European rock art panels, it ishardto determine
which
one, if any of them, willgrow up
to be anarchaeologist, amuseum
curator, a geoarchaeologist, a photographer, a historian, a cartographer or a technical illustrator.What
iscertain is the enthusiasm of these selected youngsters, partofapilot spiral-curriculum project at
La
Crosse'sNorth Woods
Elementary School,who
returned to their classrooms to report and to teach their fellow classmates about their archaeologyexperiences.For
a group offourth graders,from La
Crosse's Southern Bluffs Elementary, their experiences includedwalkingplowedfieldstosearchforcultural artifactsleftfrom
not onlypre-European occupants but alsofrom
the smallMormon community
that inhabited the coulee over a century ago. Besides contributing information to a current research project, theexperienceresultedin anexhibitin their school'smediacenterandknowledge andmemories
that will last fortheir lifetimes. Similarly, almost twenty youngsters turned out
on
a Saturdaymorning
to participate in an archaeological survey ofacitypark to determinewhether or not valuable archaeological resourceswould
bejeopardized by the building of a playground. Their supervised survey concluded that the playground could be safely built and at thesame
time gave these youngsters hands-on insight and exposure to thearchaeological process.
The
experience also gavethem
a notable distinction and pride in the development oftheircommunity.For oneretired high schoolteacher,
Don,
a lifelongdream
ofbecoming
involved in archaeology has resultedin hisvoluntaryparticipationinsuccessivesummer
field schools. There,Don
inspires other teachersandcontinues tomentor
tothehigh school students.A
group ofat-riskmiddle andhigh school studentsfrom aroundtheregionwilllongremember
theirweek-longparticipation in anexcavationat the site of an early fur-trade post (Perrot State Park, Trempealeau,
WI)
andwillremember
Don'sguidinghand
as they carefully shovel tested for the first time. Another high school teacher, Bruce, has completelyre-designedhis artcurriculumto include projects inspiredby
his archaeological experiences.Stillanotherteacher,
Le
Vern,who
once hadonly a fascination in archaeology,now
enjoys giving flintknapping demonstrations throughout the areaand
is oftremendous value to the state's regional archaeologist, having located anddocumented
twenty-onepreviouslyunrecorded sitesjustwithin the past year.A
former housewife with college- aged children ofherown,
Kathleenbeams
withjoy over herrecently completed undergraduate degreeinarchaeologyfromtheUniversityof Wisconsin-La Crosse and her part-timejob at Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center's laboratory,
where
she helps superviseundergraduate studentsand catalogsand curates artifacts. "Every morning, Igetup
and say tomyselfI'mlivinga dream," Kathleentellsvisitors tothelab.ForRyan,
Don,
Bruce,Le
Vern, and Kathleen andfor, indeed,thousands ofpeoplethroughoutwestern Wisconsin, eastern Minnesota and northeast Iowa,
MVAC's
Archaeology in EducationProgram
has offered farmore
thansatisfaction fora short-livedwhim. For
many, it has changed their lives.Because
ofthe program's focuson
educators and youth, even iftheprogram
endedtoday, its effectswould
continue to impact irreplaceable cultural resources, attitudes toward preservation, and without question,the shapingof publicawareness and policy foryearstocome.Fortunately, with respect to the future of the program, there is
no
intention of ending any timesoon
and, in fact, over the years thoughtful andintelligent
growth
has been conservatively approached and implemented as funding has increased.A
recent NationalEndowment
forthe Humanities matching grant is being used to encourage contributions that will increase anendowment
fundthat partially supportsthecenter's publiceducation program.To
use an archaeological phrase,MVAC
believes that its public education efforts have just"skimmed
the surface." Future dreams andplans includethebeginningsofamodel
statewidenetwork
to serve archaeology education throughout the region.With enough
funding andhuman
resources, a mobile van housing a minimuseum
and archaeology classroomwould
better service rural areas; an in-laboratory classroom; an internet link; an on-campus, hands-on "model"excavationand
much more
couldbe done.When
Dr.James
P. Gallagher, founder and executive director of theMVAC
organization, arrived inLa
Crosse in 1977, virtuallyno
formal archaeological research had beendone
in the area and skeptics scoffed at itsimportance.From
a staffofonewithanobsolete, donatedcomputertoa staff
often archaeologists,
two
educators and seasonal crewsthatcanaddan additional iwenty tothe staff,MVAC
has indeed proven inmany ways
that for many, dreams cancome
true.The
University of Wisconsin-La
Crosseisnow
included inthe limitednumber
of universities in the nation that offer an undergraduateprogram
in archaeology, andMVAC's
Archaeology in EducationProgram
isunique in its specific focus
on
involving and providing continual support to teachers and precollegiate students.Starting
Your Own Archaeology Education Program
The
beginnings ofMVAC'S
Archaeology inEducation
Program
in 1990were
the result of a desire to createmore
effectiveways
towork
with the precollegiateaudiencethattheCenterwas
often asked to address.We
created hands-on activitiesthat activelyinvolved studentsinourpresentations.
MVAC
found that classroomswere
not always preparedforthe presentations, so alibrary ofbooks
and teacherguideswas
gathered for instructors to use with their students before and afterMVAC's
presentations. Teachers, however, found visiting the libraryinconvenientand researchingreferences time-consuming.
We,
therefore,combined
existing materials and purchased and formatted complementary resources to create our firstresourceboxesto circulatethroughouttheschools.
Teacherswanted
more background
informationandMVAC
created the "Archaeology for Teachers Class."MVAC's
"Archaeology Field School for Teachers"was
introducedbecauseteacherswanted
to participate in field excavations but alsowanted
credit for relicensing andto help
them move up on
their pay scales.
Because
teachers requested informationon
interrelated topics andwanted
activities that
were
not as timeconsuming
as extended courses,MVAC's
series ofworkshops was
implemented.Looking
back, the small changes and additions toMVAC
sArchaeologyinEducationProgram
have taken the organization a greater distance and in different directions than originally envisioned in 1990. Centralto the growth, however, hasalwaysbeen
our desire to listen to the needs of both archaeologistsand the precollegiate instructorsthatMVAC works
with, and our wish tomake
theprogram
mutuallybeneficial. Just as important areMVAC's
longtermcommitment
to teachersand to the dual trainingofMVAC's
educational staff. For those organizations just beginning to design or implementprograms oftheirown, MVAC
suggests endeavors that can be realistically accomplished even though, at thistime, theymightseem
small or insignificant. Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center's journey is farfrom
over and the futuregrowth
ofthe educational outreachprogram
will continue tocome
from those small, seemingly insignificant actions—each individualphone
call,each presentation, eachreport or meeting.
