are capable.Admittedly, it is
sometimes
difficult to find thehumor
insome of
the articles inAnthroNotes.Not
allcartoonsare
meant
tobe
funny, but theyareintended
tocombine
visual elements insuch
away
as to star- tle—
to captureour
attentionand
focus itmomentar-
ily
on
anew
idea, oron
a familiar idea seenfrom
anew
perspective.By
synthesizing multiple elements into a single focus, cartoonart causes us to see
an
event orphenomenon through new
eyes,making
us laugh, or even to think! . . .A good
cartoonsimpli-fies, distills,
and
refines an event until it instantlycom- municates
amoment
in time that the artist has sin- gled out as being differentfrom
the precedingmoment
or the next one.
Immediacy
is the essenceof a successful cartoon. . .
As an
anthropologist, Iparticularly enjoy
drawing
forAnthroNotes
because Iam
able towork
asan
artistand
anthropologist simulta-neously.
Every drawing
isan ethnography
or archeo- logical siteof
itsown —
a specifictime and
place, acomplete environment peopled by
thinking, behav- ing, interactive beings. Further, I suspect there isno
better guide to the morality, politics, religions, social issues
—
in short, the culture— of our
times thanour
cartoons. . .
As an
anthropologist, I realize itisimportant
to symbolizewithout
stereotyping, tolampoon
a serious topicwithout becoming
tasteless, since the cartoon-ist's goal is to
communicate
ideas, not just toamuse
the reader.
The most amazing
partof
this experienceis
what
others readintomy
cartoons; theyfindhumor
inthings Ididnotanticipateor,worse, they miss
what
I
meant
tobe most
obvious.Unlike my academic
papers,my
cartoons oftendo
distortordinary percep- tionsby
violatingsome kind of
clicheand
lookingatsomething
familiar inan
off-kilter way.To do
this whileremaining
sensitive toan
extraordinarilyeclecticand
critical readership canbe
quite achallenge.Page
