The U.S. admits more immigrants each year than all the other countries of the world combined. By 2050 non-

Hispanic whites will be 47% of the population, down from 62% in 2005; Hispanics will grow to 29% and the

number of Asians will triple.

• After 9/11 the percentage of Americans believing that immigration is good for the country dropped to 52%... Down from 62%

earlier.

Democrats and more liberal Americans believe that there should be a path toward citizenship for illegal immigrants who learn English, work hard, pay taxes, serve in the military and attend or graduate from high

school and college. Democrats refer to America as “a nation of immigrants”.

Republicans and more conservative Americans oppose citizenship for illegal immigrants as they believe it would reward illegal behavior and only encourage more illegal immigration. Republicans also believe liberal immigration policies (particularly since 9/11)

are dangerous for national security.

Many people believe that (illegal) immigrants are taking jobs away from other Americans.

Objective studies do show, however, that immigrants overall are a plus for the economy.

Arizona passed a law last April

requiring the police to check on the immigration status of

people suspected of being in the U.S. Illegally. The federal government through the courts has blocked implementation of the law.

The U.S. Supreme court will hear the case this year in April.

Alabama has passed the

most restrictive law to

date. It requires all public schools to check on the immigration status of the students.

Implementation of the Alabama law is also being blocked.

afternoon.”

“You can not find legal workers.

Basically they last a day or two.”
