INTRODUCTION

The Indian Ocean, though s t i l l t h e l e a s t known of t h e oceans, has been s t u d i e d g r e a t l y s i n c e t h e i n t e r n a t i o n a l expeditions o f t h e

1960s. This bibliography i s o f f e r e d a s a f u r t h e r c o n t r i b u t i o n t h e r e t o . It stems from an e a r l i e r and much s m a l l e r p u b l i c a t i o n by one o f u s

(PETERS, A . J . 1957). It i s t h e f r u i t o f our own reading, and not t h e r e s u l t o f a systematic s e a r c h o f , say; l i b r a r y c a t a l o g u e s , indexes o f journals o r c o l l e c t i o n s o f a b s t r a c t s . It provides a key t o f o u r and a h a l f c e n t u r i e s of Indian Ocean e x p l o r a t i o n and r e s e a r c h , and i s an annotated and indexed l i s t o f published s c i e n t i f i c work b e a r i n g on t h e s m a l l e r B r i t i s h - h e l d i s l a n d s and included s e a s i n t h e western Indian Ocean
