AU recognizes faculty stars at annual Honors Convocation 4/24/02

A physics professor is one of Alfred University's star teachers. Dr. Henry Nebel, a member of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences faculty since 1977, received the Independent College Fund of New York Excellence in Teaching Award during the annual Honors Convocation.Nebel was selected for the honor, which includes a $1,000 cash prize donated by New York State Electric and Gas Corporation, by a vote of junior and senior students and his colleagues on the Alfred University faculty. Two years ago, Nebel received a Joseph Kruson Trust Fund Award for Excellence in Teaching from the University.A 1961 graduate of the University of Rochester with a B.S. in physics, Nebel earned his Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Buffalo in 1967. He taught at Boston State College, now part of the University of Massachusetts, and at the National University of El Salvador prior to coming to Alfred. The John F.

McMahon Ceramic Teaching Excellence Award was presented to Dr. Garrett McGowan, assistant professor of chemistry. This is the second top teaching award for McGowan in the five years since he joined the AU faculty. He received the Independent College Fund of New York Excellence in Teaching Award in 2000.A member of the AU faculty since 1997, McGowan received a B.S. degree in 1987 from the University of Maine, and a Ph.D. degree in 1994 from the University of Vermont.The Ruth Berger Rubenstein Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching went to Linda Sikora, assistant professor of ceramic art in the School of Art and Design. A member of the AU faculty since 1997, Sikora received her Master of Fine Arts degree in 1992 from the University of Minneapolis in 1992. She earned a BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.This year's winners of the Joseph Kruson Trust Awards for Excellence in Teaching are:Dr. William DiBrell, professor of philosophy, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.Dr.

Gerar Edizel, assistant professor of art history, School of Art and Design.Dr. Doreen Edwards, assistant professor of materials science and engineering, School of Ceramic Engineering and Materials Science.Dr. Susan Mayberry, professor of English, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.Dr. Robert Myers, professor of anthropology, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.Dr. Amy Rummel, professor of marketing, College of Business.Dr. Emrys Westacott, associate professor of philosophy, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.Dr. John Williams, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, College of Engineering and Professional Studies.Recipients of State University of New York Chancellor's Awards were recognized. Elizabeth Gulacsy, associate librarian and art librarian at Scholes Library of Ceramics as well as archivist for the state-supported units at Alfred University, was cited for excellence in

librarianship. Margaret Rasmussen, associate director of the National Science Foundation's Industry-University Center for Glass Research and founder of GlassResearcher, a publication for the glass industry, was honored for excellence in professional service. Honored for 25 years' service to Alfred University were Dr. Arthur L. Greil, professor of

sociology, and Jessie Shefrin, professor of print media.##
