This year, the Beth Robinson Judson Leadership Center was established as the central home for leadership education at Alfred University. From our continuing emphasis on leadership development for women through the Women’s Leadership Center, to our certificate program in leadership, to mentoring new students, to revitalizing our campus chapter of ODK, to new outreach to engineering students, the Judson Leadership Center serves our entire campus community and beyond. It’s been a very good year.
Alfred University is a special place… we’ve always nurtured young minds and spirits. We welcome divergent views and seek sustainable solutions to complex challenges. We know there’s a magical quality to AU, one that blends science with art, commerce with creativity, and mechanics with humanity.
At the Judson Leadership Center, our students find their leadership voices. They uncover what matters to them and how to make a real difference. They explore new perspectives and they forge common bonds. From workshops to speakers to seminars and conferences, our students are active, engaged and leading!
It’s been a great pleasure to serve as Director this year, finding synergies among all our programs and looking careful- ly at how we can improve our leadership experiences. I invite you to read on, discover the ways the Leadership Center adds to Alfred’s magic. There’s a great story here and one we will, with your support and involvement, continue to write.
From Kathy Woughter, Vice President for Student Affairs...
2011-12 was the first year that we operated under the name of my friend and inspiration, the late Beth Judson. As Beth supported, challenged, and inspired the staff and students at AU, so the Center bearing her name has carried out her legacy. The Judson Leadership Center model has allowed us to strengthen and grow our Women’s Leadership Center while partnering with, and creating, leader- ship development programs that serve all AU students. Women’s leadership will always be the founda- tion of the Judson Center, but Beth wanted to build from that foundation. I am pleased that in year one, we’ve started that process. I can’t wait to see what the coming year brings.

The Women’s Leadership Center
continues as the foundational bedrock for all leadership pro- gramming at AU. With our emphasis on enhancing leadership skills and building confidence in women stu- dents, the WLC provides exceptional experiences through the Women’s Leadership Academy, the Women of Influence Speaker series, the WLC Research Awards, the Pamela and Gene Bernstein Leadership Awards, and the Alpha Kappa Omicron (AKO) Leadership Awards. Our Academy students engaged in rich, complex and challenging leadership journeys. Their capstone pro- jects ranged from our annual Women’s Conference, to an awareness campaign about girls’ wellness and body image, to events highlighting the benefits of animal-friendly campuses, to a seminar showcasing the unique learning styles of college students with learning disabilities, to a day-long conference exploring work- ing, living and studying abroad, to the launch of a new leadership magazine. Across the Academy, our stu- dents learned about women’s issues, leadership strategies and social change. Our Academy members are the best ambassadors for the WLC.
The Women of Influence series welcomed Susan Campbell Bartoletti, Newberry Award winning author;
CEO and President of Ceralink, Dr. Marina Pascucci (‘77); Ms. Breea Willingham, scholar on African- American women in prisons; and Jennifer Pharr Davis, speed record holder for thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. Offering diversity of perspectives and experiences, these women shared a common theme: find your passion, equip yourself with knowledge and a team of talent, and don’t let anything stop you. Great advice.
The WLC also supports women’s leadership development by means of grants and awards. The WLC Research Award was given to two students this year, each of whom conducted academic research on topics related to gender roles, professional career paths, and strategies for success. The AKO Awards were given this year to two students for their exceptional work in personal academic achievement and in campus-based service.
The Bernstein Leadership Awards provided financial support for six stu- dents to serve internships and to attend professional conferences.
In collaboration with the Inamori School of Engineering, the WLC began a five-year program, E-LEAD (Engineering Leadership Education and Development) to provide scholarships to engineering students through a grant from the National Science Foundation. Scholarship recipients will receive leadership and career coaching from the WLC. We will welcome eleven students to the E-LEAD program in the fall of 2012.
When the WLC opened its doors in 2006, we promised we would pro- vide leadership education so our women students would be more confi-
dent to assume leadership in their own lives, careers and communities. We are keeping our promise. Every day, we help AU women students find their voice, build their skills and do good work.

2011-12 was our pilot year for the
Saxon Sidekicks mentoring program
, whichpaired incoming students with current students and faculty/staff mentors. The program’s goal is to build a sense of community and connection for
our new Saxons so they adjust to college life and the Alfred way. Running for just the fall semester (the most challenging transitional time for new students), Saxon Sidekicks initially involved over 100 new students and 70+ volunteer mentors.
Sidekicks were encouraged to involve their mentees in varied on- and off- campus events, including athletic matches, movies, plays, concerts, lectures, and enjoying the great outdoors that surround Alfred.
New students felt that making a connection with an upper level student helped them feel stronger ties to AU, and to the local community. Most
mentees have volunteered to mentor a new student in the fall of 2012.
The Gary Horowitz Leadership Development Certificate Program
gives AU students the flexibility and encouragement to become leaders. Organized around three themes, Individual Leadership, Team Leadership and Service-based Leadership, the program is open to any student. Workshops, speakers, seminars and conferences comprise the ‘curriculum’ for this non -credit experience. Students earn certificates of achievement at each level, and at the third level students complete a capstone service -leadership project. In 2011-12, we enrolled 34 students in the program. Of these, 30 completed level #1; 20 completed level #2, and 13 completed Level #3. Capstone projects included a baseball clinic for local youth, a swap-shop weekend for campus residents, a seminar for faculty and staff on learning disabilities among college students, and the installation of a photo montage depicting themes of AU leadership.
Students in the program reported higher levels of understanding regarding their own leadership styles (71.4% strongly agree); stronger sense of confidence to assume leadership (57.1%), and improved skills to perform leadership (64.29%).
“The Horowitz Leadership Program taught me to think about how my values drive my decisions, how to consider others’ views and experiences, and to listen more carefully.
I’m ready to be a better leader than I was before.”

OMICRON DELTA KAPPA,
the national leadership honor society, welcomed 49 inductees this year to the Alfred University Circle. ODK honors juniors, seniors, alumni and university employees who have distinguished themselves in leadership roles within the spheres of the arts, media, athletics or campus service while pursuing academic excellence. The Alfred University Circle was established in 1988.In 2011-12, the AU Circle presented E-BOARD 101, a leadership training conference for newly elected officers for student clubs and organizations. Over 90 club officers participated in this event, learning fundamental leadership and officer functions, such as budgeting, event management, member recruit- ment, delegation, problem-solving, promotions, and more.
Next year, ODK will expand its impact on campus, assisting with Orientation,
Move-In, Homecoming, Hot Dog Day, Saxon Sidekicks and more. New officers for the
coming year are Wayde Ross (president), Gregory Arnold (VP, programming), Kelly
McNamara (VP, public relations), Kathryn Esham (Treasurer), Brielle DePugh (VP,
member relations), and Nicole Souter (Secretary). The Circle invites AU alumni who are
ODK members to reconnect by joining our Facebook page.

To Our Supporters,
When you read this report, you might think, “Good heavens! They are doing an amazing amount of work at the Leadership Center!” You’re right. We are… and we’re doing this with you. If we didn’t have your gifts, we simply could not do this very important work: creating strong, ethical leaders who will make the world better. With every gift, of whatever size, I contin- ue to be encouraged, grateful and motivated. The words thank you are not enough, but they are sincerely offered.
To make a gift to the Women’s Leadership Center or to sup- port the Beth Robinson Judson Leadership Center, please contact Ms. Lori Wellman of University Relations, at 607- 871-2144. Thank you.
