Peter Roach receives MERIT award

Peter Roach received an NIDDK MERIT award (Method to Extend Research in Time) for his project, Glycogen Metabolism and Its Regulation. The award

acknowledges his “consistent and excellent contributions to

scientific knowledge”. NIH established MERIT Awards in July 1986 for a limited number of selected investigators who

demonstrate superior competence and outstanding productivity in research endeavors. A main component of the award is to relieve the investigator from writing frequent renewal applications by providing an opportunity to obtain up to ten years of support in two segments.

An initial 5-year award is coupled with an opportunity for a 3- to 5- year extension. Congratulations Peter!

Congratulations to all!

Congratulations to the following faculty on their new appointments and/ or tenure effective 7/1/05.

Joe Dynlacht of Radiation Oncology received tenure 7/1/05.

Kristin Chun of the Wells Center was appointed Assistant

Professor.

Tracy Anthony of the Evansville Center for Medical Education was appointed Assistant Professor.

Bart Pederson accepted the position of Assistant Professor at Ball State University in

association with the Muncie Center for Medical Education.

He is also appointed as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Claire Walczak of the Medical Science Program at IUB received tenure.

Marshall Anderson is now the Associate Director for Education at the Northwest Center for Medical Education.

Biotechnology Certificate Training

Program

Enrollment is open for IUSOM’s Biotechnology Certificate

Training Program. Officials plan to enroll 15 students in graduate level training this fall. These will be offered on a part-time basis to enable students to work and study at the same time.

A 17-credit Biotechnology Certificate requires 1½ years to complete. The curriculum includes: an introductory course in biochemistry and molecular biology; three hands-on

laboratory courses; two problem- based courses in finding solutions to modern biotechnology

problems; and a case-based course in responsible conduct of research. A 30-credit Master of Science in Biotechnology degree builds on the certificate program, requiring an additional 1½ years (13 credits) of advanced

coursework, student seminars and independent research with a faculty member.

Admission to the Biotechnology Certificate program requires a baccalaureate degree in science.

After completion of the certificate program, students may continue on to the master’s degree

program.

Biochem Family Picnic

The 3rd Annual Biochem Family Picnic will be held on Friday, Sept 9 at the Eagle Crest Group Picnic Area at Eagle Creek Park at 7201 Fishback Road (off Raceway Road, north of 71st Street). Signs will be posted to direct you to the site since this is not accessible from the main entrances to the park. There’s no entrance fee at the group picnic area. The picnic starts at 1:00 p.m. Biochem will provide soft drinks, hamburgers, hot dogs and the “fixins”. Please bring your favorite picnic food to share.

Because the Eagle Crest area is isolated from the rest of the park, there is no restriction on alcohol there, so you are welcome to bring a cold beer. Grilled food will be ready between 1:00 and 3:00. At 3:30 there’s a softball game between faculty and students. Volleyball and soccer will also be available. Bring your spouse, kids, and/or significant other and join us - rain or shine - for an afternoon of food and fun.

Maps are available in the Biochem office and in this newsletter. If you’d like more info on activities or to volunteer to help set up, clean up, or be a grill master, please contact grad student representative Luke Dannenberg at 274-8488.
