Breeding Records from Southern Illinois.

In connection with Bio- logical Survey fieldwork
during the season of 1909 I visited anumber
oflocalitiesinsouthernIllinois
and among
thebirdnotes gatheredonthis tripthe followingseemtobeworthyofrecord.
Ralluselegans.
King
Rail.— At Shawneetown, June 18, a King
Rail
was
seen a nmnber
of times around a small marshy pond
in the river
bottoms. Itwas
quitetame
andranaboutnearme,utteringaloud keck-
keck. Afterwalkingaboutin the grassawhile Istarted twoyoung
ones,
whichdoubtless explains thetamenessofthe parent.
Buteo lineatus.
Red-shouldered Hawk. —Several pairs breed in the
swamps
atOliveBranch. A
femalecollectedthereonMay
18isreferable
tothetypical subspecies.
Strix varia.
Barred Owl. — An
adult female was collected at Olive Branch,May
18.Dryobatesvillosusauduboni.
Southern Hairy Woodpecker. —Fairly
common
in theswamps
at Olive Branch where a specimenwascollectedMay

is
common
throughout southern Illinois; a specimenwas takenatOlive Branch.Chondestes grammacus.
Lark Sparrow. —This bird is of very local
distribution in southern Illinois; it was seen only between Cobden and
Lick Creek,whereseveral pairswerenotedMay

Lanius ludovicianus migrans.
Migrant
Shrike.—
Shrikes are quite scarce in theextreme southern part ofthe State, but are rathercommon
on the prairies about Coulterville.A
specimen taken there and one at Odin are referable to migrans.One
was seen at Olive Branchand

Warbler. —This bird was
observed
severaltimesatOliveBranch(May
15-20)and
atReevesville(June21,22)
butunfortunately nospecimens were secured. The
birds were identified
first by
their songs and later by

favorite woods, I encounteredmy
first Prothonotary Warbler. Itflew directly atme,avoidingmy
