Green Building Design as an Effort to Reduce the Impact of Global Warming in Indonesia

The world's climate as a whole is being damaged as a consequence of human activities. This is caused by an increase in the concentration of gases that block the reflection of sunlight energy from the earth which causes an increase in the greenhouse effect and causes the earth, the planet we live in, to become hotter.
Climate change is a problem that must be addressed immediately because of its harmful effects on living things. The World Health Organization estimates that between 2030 and 2050 climate change will trigger approximately 250,000 deaths each year from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea, and heat stress. Climate change can be caused by various things, such as global warming. Global warming occurs due to the effect of changing natural conditions. Construction projects also contribute to changes in natural conditions which in turn can result in global warming and climate change.
About 70 percent of energy use, buildings, and construction accounted for 39 percent of carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, as time goes by, more and more construction projects will occur, especially in Indonesia. In dealing with this problem, Indonesia made a policy by planning low- carbon development.
One of the concepts to reduce the impact of construction on climate change is green building.
Indonesia itself already has a certification body for green buildings which is called the Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI) which was founded in 2009. The choice of this idea was chosen because at this time there are a lot of buildings and other infrastructure which is even estimated to be up to tens of millions of buildings in operation. The term green building refers to tall buildings or residential houses that are designed with attention to health and comfort aspects. In addition, the green building also has a role in reducing energy use and reducing environmental waste.
Some things that need to be considered in the construction of green buildings, namely:
1. Appropriate land use;
2. Energy efficiency and conversion;
3. Water conservation;
4. Material sources and cycles;
5. Indoor air quality and air comfort;
6. Building environment management.
The six factors above are the benchmarks for an assessment by GBCI of whether the building meets the requirements of green building.
The application for green building is divided into three, namely:
Pre-Construction, in this stage it is necessary to study the location and design of the building according to the needs. How convenient, how accessible, what materials to use, etc.
Construction/development, after knowing the final design, green building construction can be carried out, during the construction stage the contractor also needs to pay attention to access to the distribution of the material, whether is it safe for the environment, uses water as needed and not excessive, and manages waste remaining from construction.
Building operation and maintenance, energy consumption must be minimized. During the day, the use of lights can be reduced by utilizing natural lighting, namely incoming sunlight, as well as managing waste that will be disposed of or recycled.
It can be concluded that Green buildings are one of the efforts to overcome the issue of climate change in Indonesia. Draft green buildings a translation of the concept of sustainable construction (sustainable construction). This concept refers to structures and processes that are environmentally responsible, from the pre-construction stage to the demolition stage. Although the application of the concept of green building there are still obstacles and challenges, this is a real step in dealing with the issue of climate change, especially in the building and construction sector.
