The distributional part of this bulletin is the work of the author; but it has been examined by Mr. James H. Fleming, Mr. P. A. Tavcrner, and Mr. F. Seymour Hersey. Mr. Hersey also figured the egg measurements, after collecting a lot of additional measurements from some of the large egg collections, notably those of the California bird reservations belonging to the United States,. of Sciences (Mailliard collection), the Colorado Museum of Natural History (Bradbury collection), Mr. Kicliard C. Harlow, Col. John E. Thayer, and the ITniversity of California (Grinnell. Academy. collection). In outlining the breeding ranges of the ducks, no attempt has been made to mention all of the many cases recorded of northern breeding species which liuve lingcretl for the summer and bred far south of their normal breeding ranges, as such birds are often cripples; only a few cases have been mentioned which seemed to be casual breedinjr records of normal birds..

MERGUS MERGANSER AMERICANUS. Cassin.. AMERICAN MERGANSER. HABITS. Spring.. — This large and handsome duck has always been associated. my mind. Being signs of the breaking up of winter. on the southern border of ice and snow and is the very first of our waterfowl to start on its spring migration. We may confidently look for it in New England during the first warm days in February or as soon as the ice has begun to break up in our rivers and lakes. We are glad to greet these welcome harbingers of spring, for the sight of the handsome drakes flying along our water in. a. hardy. with the. species,. it. first. lingers. courses or circling high in the air over our frozen lakes, with their reminds us of the. brilliant colors flashing in the winter sunshine,. migratory hosts that are soon to follow. They are looking for open water in the rivers, for rifts in the ice or open borders around the shores of the lakes, where the first warm sunshine has tempted the earliest fish to seek the genial shallows, but they are often doomed to disappointment, for winter lingers in the lap of spring and again locks the lakes with solid ice driving the hardy pioneers back to. winter quarters. 1lie drakes are always the first to arrive and the females follow a few weeks later. The most surprising part of the performance is the spurt of water fully 3 or 4 feet long which every now and then is sent backward into the air by the powerful kick of the drake's foot. It is similar to the performance of the whistler but much greater, and while the foot of the whistler is easily seen and is plainly a part of the display, it is difficult to see the red foot of the merganser in the rush of water, although it is evident, doubtless, to the females.. The. display of the brilliantly colored foot in. probably the primary sexual display, and the splash, at first incidental and secondary, has now become of primary importance. During all this time the female swims about unconcernedly, merely keeping out 01 the way of the ardent and b'^lligerent males, although she sometimes joins in the both species. is. dance and bobs in a mild way. At last she succumbs to the captivating display and submerges herself so that only a small part of her body with a bit of the crest appear above the water, and she swims slowly beside or after her mate, sometimes even touching him with her bill. Later she remains motionless, flattens herself still more, the crest disappears, and she sinks so that only a line like that made by a board One would never imagine it to be a live duck. '"Nesting.— On the nesting habits of the American merganser there has been much discussion and many conflicting opinions, some asserting that it always nests in hollow trees or that it never nests on the ground. As a matter of fact it does both, for its nesting habits.

There were 15 eggs under her in a nest profusely lined with white down, mixed with hay. Further search revealed another nest near by, similarly located; the bird had left the nest and had carefully covered the 12 eggs which it contained with a soft blanket down. Lieut. I. T. Van Kammen (1915) found two nests in an old, abandoned lighthouse tower; the nests were about 3 feet apart and "each nest was placed in a depression, perhaps 5 inches deep, scraped out of the soft dirt into the crevices I. of the lighthouse floor.". Audubon (1840) gives an attractive account of finding the nest of a goosander on a marshy island. He describes the nesting site and nest as follows: islands on which the goosander is wont to breed are mostly small, as if selected the purpose of allowing the sitting bird to get soon to the water in case of danger. The nest is very large, at times raised 7 or 8 inches on the top of a bed of all the dead weeds which the bird can gather in the neighborhood. Properly speaking, the real nest, however, is not larger than that of the dusky duck, and is rather neatly formed externally of fibrous roots and lined round the edges with the down of the bird.. The drakes desert the ducks and usually disappear from the breeding grounds entirely as soon as the eggs are laid, leaving the females to perform the duties of incubation and care for the young alone. In Newfoundland we saw only females on the lakes, where they were busy with family cares, but we saw plenty of males on the swiftwater rivers, playing in the rapids and fishing in the pools. Several observers in Maine have said that the males are not seen during the summer, but this may be due to the fact that the males are in eclipse plumage at this time and are very shy and retiring. Mergansers which nest in hollow trees are usually very close sitters, and it is often impossible to drive a sitting bird from her nest by pounding the tree; on the other hand those which nest on the ground on islands. Moses, who. connection with the breeding of this bird was related while in camp at Songo River had exceptional oppor-. In the spring of 1896 a nest was located in a tall hollow where it could be readily seen from his camp door. After the young were hatched Mr. Moses saw the mother bird alight in the water at the foot of the stub in which the nest was located and commence to call to the young birds in the nest. On June 18, 1910, I fished the famous salmon pool at the fork of the river, and having incidentally run the canoe close to the shore near where this old elm stands, I landed and rapped several times sharply on the tree with a stick, for I had been told that a wood duck— which on the Tobique means a golden eye—nested there the previous spring. The female merganser immediately flew out and having circled about After assuring myself of the identification, over the river, aliglited on the water. which caused me some astonishment on account of the size of the bird in proportion to the entrance of the hole, I returned to my fishing. In a few moments I noticed a small bird drop down apparently from the hole, and It. sers. My first thought was that a bank in a few more seconds another and then a third swallow, of which there are many on the river, had flown up near to the hole and down again three times in succession. This caused me to stop fishing and to watch, .. when to my astonishment a small bird with white breast appeared jumped out, and was followed by another, and again another. I then. in the hole,. no time saw in the water against the bank, swimming around, a brood of 11 young ducks. I was much surprised, as I had been under the impression from what I had read that the old duck would certainly carry down the young from such an inaccessible position, and though I believe the young birds must have landed in the water, I was yet astonished that they could withstand the shock of such a drop, and I presumed that by rapping on the tree I had caused the old bird to leave in such fright that her fear had been communicated to the young and they had followed her example, and that the whole procedure was therefore an unnatural one. The clubhouse is situated directly across the river, and on June 12, 1913, two years later, I was sitting on the piazza when my attention was attracted by seeing something large drop from the top of this same elm into the water. I immediately saw that it was the old sheldrake and that she was swimming around close to the shore. In a few seconds another dropped from the hole to the ground and I could see it run down the bank and join its mother who was calling loudly and turning round and round in the water. This one was quickly followed by others in succession until there were seven. By this time I had called my guide and in companj of one of the members of the club was crossing the river, provided with trout-landing nets. But young sheldrakes are not unpalatable, and many. gunners shoot them regularly for food. They do not come to decoys, but, as they are swift fliers and hard to kill, shooting them is good sport. Many sportsmen feel justiiied in killing them on account of the large numbers of trout which they consume; but this is hardly justifiable, for they also destroy many predatory fish, such as pickerel and thus help to preserve the balance of nature. The drake in his newly acquired nuptial plumage is resplendent with a metallic green headdress and waving crest, the whole set off by a long coral-red bill. [Author's note: The red-breastod merganser breeds abundantly in the Magdalen Islands, Quebec, where numerous nests have been found by others, as well as by me. An island near Grosse Isle, known as Seal Island, is a famous breeding resort for this species. It is a high island of red sandstone, nearly covered with a dense forest of spruces and firs, under which the nests are concealed. A typical nest, shown in the accompanying photograph, was located in the thick woods, about 1 rod from the edge and about 40 yards from the shore; it was perfectly concealed under a dense thicket of balsam firs and would never have been discovered except that we saw the bird fly out and a few pieces of down indicated where to look. The nest was a hollow in the ground, profusely lined with gray down and a few white breast feathers; it measured 14 by 12 inches in outside and 8 by 7 inches in inside diameter. Manley B, Townsend contributes the following pretty picture of a family party. One summer day, toward evening, as I sat upon the shore of a wilderness lake, drinking in the beauty of the forest and the mountain, a flock of red-breasted mergansers came sailing around a rocky point, close inshore. Tliere were 10, led by a wary old male in full adult plumage. The otlier nine were mucli duller of color. I took them for the mother and her eight children. How alert! How wary! How incomparably wild! Suspiciously they scanned me, but I sat immovable. Plainly they were nonplussed. Yet they were taking no chances. Silently they submerged until only their heads and upper necks were above the surface, and turning swam quietly off out into the lake. A calculated movement on my part, and off went the whole family, led by the lather, leaving a foamy wake to mark their tumultuous. —. Plumages. -[Author's note: The downy young red-breasted merganser is exactly like the young American merganser except for two very slight differences in the head the nostrils in the red-breasted are in the basal third of the bill, whereas in the American they are in the central third; and the white loral stripe is tinged with ])rownish or fluffy but with a more or less distinct white spot under the eye. ;. The down is worn for a long time. The first of the plumage appears on the under parts, then comes the tail, the flanks, and the scapulars in the order named; the remainder of the body plumage follows, then that of the head and neck: the wings ajipear last, and the bird is fully grown before it can fly. The last of the do^vn is on the hind neck or central back. Millais (1913) says that in its first plumage the young male resembles the adult female, but the crest is less, the bill much shorter, and the plumage of the upper parts more slaty and not nearly so brown, and the cheeks more red with less white. The ends of the tail are also worn. By the end of October young males are easily recognized by their superior size and bill. It is not until December that much change takes place. The red-brown crest is then abundant, and black. crown and cheeks, chin, mantle, and molt to blue gray, and many vermiculated feathers mixed with slaty-brown ones come in on the thighs and flanks. By the end of March some white feathers appear on the scapulars and the first white, broadly black-edged feathers come in on the sides of the breast overlapping the wings. These prominent feathers are, however, never complete as in the case of the adult males, but are always divided in color, the lower halves being red and vermiculated with black from the broad black edge to the white above. The nape is now very dark-brown edged with worn blue gray, and not a clear rich red brown, as in the feathers begin to appear on the sides of the. scapulars.. female.. The. tail. and rump. During August, September, and October the general molt toward complete winter plumage is in progress, and tlie young male does not come into full dress until the end of November. The molt of the ecli])se plumage begins early in September and continues through October and November, or with some individuals much longer; I have a specimen in my collection, taken November 7, in. which. this. molt. is. only fairly started; by January at the latest. m.ost of the males are in full. Of the immature females. plumage again.. Millais (1913) says. first plumage the young female is similar to the adult female, except for the less abundant crest and small area of black round the eye. Tail feathers are worn and wing markings less distinct. The scapular and mantle feathers, too, which remain unchanged until March are like nearly all immature female ducks pale and worn on their outer edges and generally gray or sandy and unlike the clean rich feathers of adults. By April it is difhcult to distinguish between immature and adult females, except that the young never possess the large area of black round the eye nor the black feathers at tlie sides of the chin, and only the throat. The red-breasted merganser is chiofly a fish eater, but it does not disdain to gather up crustaceans and mollusks. In fresh water it is fond of crawfish. Nelson (1887) remarks that it feeds on sticklebacks, which abound in the brackish ponds of Alaska. It delights in the rapids of rivers, in tidal osttiaries, and in the shallow places off sand beaches nnd at the mouth of rivers, where small fish most do congregate. The gunner takes his station near at hand in a blind made of brush or sea weed or sometimes of ice cakes, and is most successful in the early morning when the birds are coming in from their night's rest on the ocean. Gunning punts covered with marsh grass are also used, but one must be a skillful sculler to be able to approach within gunshot of the wary birds. Birds that are merely winged are almost impossible to recover, as they are wonThey often swim away derful divers and generally elude pursuit.. with only the bill above water. Winter. In the latter part of September in New England, the species begins to arrive from the north and becomes exceedingly numerous during October and November. In December the numbers diminish, but it is one of our most abundant waterfowl on the Massachusetts coast throughout the winter. In the spring migration of March and April the numbers increase, but it is not until the last of May, or even the first of June that they have all left for the north. But the story of the migration of this bird is not so simple as the above statement would imply, for there is a sexual as well as an age difierence to be considered. The large flocks in the early fall appear to be all in brown dress, and this is the dress not only of the females and young but also of the adult males, who are then in the eclipse plumage. In November this plumage is molted, and the males appear resplendent in their courtship dress, while the females and young of both sexes leave for the south, so that during the winter months the vast majority are in full male plumage. Thus, one January day, out of 500 sheldrakes off Ipswich Beach I could count onl}- 6 in the dull plumage. Whether these were adult females or young or both I cannot say. In March the females put in an appearance and courting begins, and by the last of April and in May the birds are largely paired, although flocks of either or both sexes are common as well as those of immature males who have not molted into full plumage are common. Some at least of the immature males are slow in changing to adult plumage, and males in nearly complete immature dress with only a few greenish feathers about the head are often to be found in April and May. On the other hand, I have seen a bird that was half molted into adult male plumage as early as the 16th of February; tliis was probably an adult changing from the eclipse plumage, the others immature birds. The southern side of this picture, which rounds out and corroborates my northern observations has been given me by Mr. William Brewster, who says that in Florida, in winter, he has seen large flocks of female and immature red-breasted mergansers, and by Mr. Arthur T. Its habits during the winter have been described above. Courting takes place all along the New England coast even that part far from the breeding range, and begins in good weather as early as February. The long neck, head, and bill of the sheldrake, its flat bod}'^, and conspicuous white-marked wing makes its recognition in the air usually an easy one. The adult drake is easily distinguished by its reddish breast and by its crest from the goosander the females and young can often be distinguished, even at a distance, from the very similar females and young of the goosander by the more clearly defined white throat of the latter bird. In the red-breasted species (he white is less in extent and shades gradually into the brown of the neck. This is an important field mark and is often overlooked, for most authorities write that the female and young of these two species can only be distinguished in the hand by the position of the nostril, which is in the middle of the bill in the case of the goosander and nearer the base in the red-breasted species. The back of the female goosander is of pearl-blue color while that of the red-breasted species is dark ashy with a brownish tinge. These differences are also ;. noticeable in the. field..
