Bulletin. In these series are published original articles and monographs dealing with thecollections and workof the
Museum
andsetting forth newly acquiredfacts in the field of anthropology, biology, geology, history, and technology. Copies ofeach publication are distributed to libraries andscientific organizations andto specialists andothers interested in thevarioussubjects.
TheProceedings, begun in 1878, are intended for the publication, inseparate form, of shorter papers. These are gathered in volumes, octavo in size, with the publicationdateofeachpaper recordedinthe table ofcontents of thevolume.
In the Bulletin series, the first of which was issued in 1875, appear longer, separate publications consisting of monographs (occasionally in several parts) and volumes in which are collected works on related subjects. Bulletins are either octavo or quarto in size, depending on the heeds of the presentation.

27CARL JOHN DRAKE
1885-1965
Duringthe 51 years ofhislifeas an entomologist, Carl J.
Drake made
a lastingimpression
with hiswork
andcontributions to theknowledge
of Hemiptera,The
family Tingidaewas
his first love, with semi-aquatic andaquaticgroups
not farbehind;he made some
scientific contribution, however, to
almost every major
family of the Hemiptera, His magnificentcollection and library arehoused
in the United States National
Museum.
Dr.
Drake was bom
and raised onafarm
in Eagleville, Ohio, on 28 July 1885, and died in Washington, D.C., on 2October
1965.He earned
hisBachelor
of Science andBachelor
of Pedanticsdegrees
atBaldwin-Wallace
College (1912) then, at Ohio State University, earned
thedegreesof Master
ofArts(1914)and Doctor
of Philosophy (1921).
As
a graduate student and until 1922 hewas
on the staff ofSyracuse
University.As head
of theDepartment
ofZoology
andEntomology
at Iowa State University,Ames,
Iowa (1922-1946), his positions included those of State Entomologist andhead
of theEntomology
Sectionof the AgricultureExperiment
Station through the depression andwar
years. Thiswas
amost
difficult periodin the history ofmid- western
agriculturebecause
of drought,grasshopper
plagues, chinchbug
outbreaks, and the destruction ofcrops by Hessian
flies,
army worms,
and theEuropean com
borer. Dr. Drake's superior entomologicalknowledge
aidedhim
incombating
these pests both biologically and chemically.Paper
barricades and creosote stopped the flightlessimmature
chinchbugs from
migratingfrom
infested fields to freshcrop
fields.A
statewide poison-bran project destroyed thegrasshoppers and
"flyfree date"planting
methods
helped thewheat crop
escapedamage from
theHessian
fly.He
educated the generalpublictotheproblem
athand
andworked
in close cooperation with thefarmer
and local, state, and federalgovernments
tobringIowa andtheNation through these crises.vu
and
concentrated onthetaxonomy
ofHemiptera. The
titleofHonorary Research
Associate of the U.S. NationalMuseum was bestowed upon him
in 1957, and hewas
then able to devote his time entirely to research.A
bachelorwhose
life centeredaround
his work, he spent twelvehours
a day at themuseum,
six and a half daysa week,
(How
disappointed hewas
tolearnthemuseum was
closed onChristmas
day.')Most
of his effortswere
directedtoward
the description ofnew
genera and species.He
enjoyed having these illustratedby
talented scientific artists.The
morphological study of thefamily Tingidae (Drake and Davis, 1960) and the catalog of the Tingidae(Drake and
Ruhoff, 1965)are
amemorial
and tribute to Carl J.Drake, who was
the author of theoverwhelming
majority of tingid taxa.This
paper
consists of Carl J.Drake's complete
bibliographyand
an index tonew names
introduced byhim. Many
of his 519 papers,which were
written whilehe was
state entomologist,concern
the agriculturaland economic problems
of insect pests.These papers are
not indexed herein since nonew names were
introduced in them.Two comprehensive
obituaries ofDr.Drake
havebeen
published:GURNEY,
A. B.,KRAMER,
J. P., andWIRTH, W. W.
