Ihave

examined

the

box

ofclams whichjust

came

to

hand

fromDon- aldMacleay,esq.,president of theboard of trade of Portland, Oreg.

Mr. Macleay states that they are theEastern clams,

and

found at Shoalwater Bay,

Washington

Territory, which iscorrect as to their original (indirectly)

and

present habitat. I

was

awareof the presence of these clams atthelocalitygiven

by

Mr. Macleay,

some months

ago,

and

it

would

bewiseto put thematter on record. Captain Simpson, apublic-spirited citizenof

San

Francisco, of thefirm ofSimpsonBroth-

ers, extensively engaged inthe

lumber

trade, employinga great

many

vessels in their business, informed

me

thathe

had

atone time (orat various times) sent

up

the coast

by

their captains a quantity of

Mya

armariaforplanting in Shoalwater Bay,

and

it, Mya,

had

multiplied wonderfully, and

now

(at the time of our conversation,

May,

1884) this clam

was

abundant there.

The

clams planted

by

the directionofCap- tain

Simpson

wereobtained

by him

in

San

Francisco,

where Mya now

"rules the roost," its increase in

San

Francisco

Bay and

excellent

quality having nearly superseded the native clams, Tapes(or Cuneus)

and Macoma;

thelatterbeing

now

seldom seenonthestallsofthe fish-

markets.

Mya

armaria,as Ihaveheretofore stated,*

was

first detected on the eastern shore of

San

Francisco Bay,in 1874,

by Henry

Hemphill,

who

collected

some

rather small

and somewhat

delicate specimens. These heturned over toDr.

Wesley Kewcomb,

then of Oakland,Cal.,for ex- amination. Dr.

Newcomb

regarded

them

as a

new

species which he described as

Mya

hemphilliiA

The

largestspecimen foundatthattime byDr.Hemphill

was

scarcely two-thirds the sizeoftheaverageofthose

now

on themarketstalls.

Followingthe completion of the transcontinental railroad about the year 1869-'70,

some

ofthe oysterfirms in

San

Francisco

commenced

im- porting small oysters, Ostrea virpiniea, from the Atlantic side by the car-load forplantingin

San

FranciscoBay, whereinaseason orsothey attain a good merchantablesize,

and become

exceedinglyfat

and

offine fineflavor.

With

these importations of smalloysters, the spat of

Mya

undoubtedly was accidentally and incidentally introduced to the w<

coast.

In 1881 Dr. Anderson, of Santa Cruz (a1 the head of Monterey Bay), sent

me

specimensfromsaid locality, wherehe foundthem at the mouth of alagoon. These were rather under size. It [Mya) was quite likely placed atthis laststation by sonic of the "shell-fish" dealers of Santa Cruz.

An

examination of

many

ofthe

mounds

and shell heaps(kitchen- middens) on the shores of San Francisco Bay and the adjacent region, hasas yettailedtorevealafragment of the shellsof.Mya arenaria,though theremainsofTapes (Cuneus),Macoma, Mytilus, Cardinal,&c.,are abun- dant,

common,

oroccasional,in proportions which

may

be intoned from the orderin which 1 have placed

them

above.

receiving-tank in hatching-room," about 1 liter of water, copiousblack,ropy,andflocculent residue; supernatant liquid,yellowish milky. Mixture has decomposed by standing, with development of a bulkyblack fungus.

No

sulphnreted hydrogen.

B.

"From

oneof the apparatusesin which eggs are placed" about 4 ounces heavyreddish-yellow sediment; supernatant liquid, clear.

Partial analysis of the dried residue results as follows:

The

loss onignition ismostly organic matter.

Of

inorganic constituents there have been detected: Chlorine,sul- phuric acid, calcium, magnesium,silica, alumina (day), and sesqnioxide ofiron; thelastthree

named

constitutingthegreaterpart ofthe incom- bustible residue.
