What are your general impressions of cultural heritage programming at IUPUI?
The discussion quickly moved off topic and towards developing a description of being a member of an affinity group at IUPUI and working with CCL on programming. This is often considered an offensive representation, yet CCL staff members were unaware of this. The second level was instrumental: Some groups mentioned that they felt a competition with CCL to plan programs, while others felt supported by them.
They felt that the opportunities for leadership training were good, but some of the support services they could use, such as officer transition resources, did not seem to exist. Others mentioned a good partnership with CCL staff, one that was very helpful when her organization was first being formed. Regarding the topic of the first discussion question, heritage month programming, the general feeling was that CCL was planning heritage month programming and the events planned by the students should be included around 2 CCL events.
Participants expressed interest in involving a wider variety of students to help with the programming and make it a more collaborative experience. Participants also discussed the gap between the organization and governance of the Cube and the new multicultural center in Taylor Hall. They were disappointed that they were no longer part of the planning of how The Cube would be used.
During the remainder of the discussion, the moderator and note taker were able to complete responses to some of the questions in the initial interview protocol, as noted below.
How did you become involved with multicultural programming at IUPUI? Do you encourage others to get involved? How?
Why do students participate in the planning of multicultural programming?
Why do students participate in the multicultural programs, themselves?
What suggestions might you have for the improvement of the way in which cultural heritage programming is happening at IUPUI?
