the task of identifying specimens ofCasuarina
sent in to theBureau
of Plant Industryfrom
various parts of the country, the writerwas
facedwith
the perplexity that the majority ofsamples
consisted only in branchlets, while the keys in allbooks
arebased mainly on
flowersand
fruits. In order toovercome
this difficulty a special stud}"was made
of the branchlets of plantsknown from
their reproductive characters tobe
correctly identified,and
a simplekey
to specieswas then based on
branchlets.Another
useful diagnostic characterwas found
in the seedswhich
authorshave much
neglected,though they
are quite distinctive.As most
of the plantsofCasuarina
receivedfrom
foreign correspondents consist only in seedsand
these, as it has proved, oftenwrongly
labelled, it has
seemed
of value to indicatehow
Casuarinasmay be
identified
from
seeds.All
specimens
ofCasuarina
in theNational Herbarium,
theEco- nomic Herbarium
of theBureau
of Plant Industry,and
the seed collection of the Office of ForeignSeed and
Plant Introductionhave been examined,
as well as those in theherbarium
of Professor L.H.
Bailey.Casuarina,
an
Australasian genus, isnow
extensivelygrown
in this country.As an ornamental and economic genus
it is ofcoming
importance.In
using the followingkey
it shouldbe
recalled that theapparent
leaves are realty branchlets,and
that the true leaves arereduced
to teeth in a sheatharound
the nodes, as inEquisetum.Measurements,
particularly of the branchlets, are important; asthey
aremade
invery
small units it is essential tobe
accurate.A micrometer
caliperis best for this purpose,
though
a millimeter ruler, readwith
amag-
nifying glass, will do.
