genus of hard-shelled citrous
fruits. Walter

The
wild relatives of thecommon
orangemay be
divided intoseveral rather distinct groups.
One
ofthese consists of the hard- shelled citrous fruits ofwhich
the bestknown
representatives are the bael fruit, Beloumarmelos
(L.)W.
F.Wight
{Aeglemar-
melos (L.) Correa),and
thewood
apple of India {Feronia ele-phantum,
Correa).These two were known
toRheede, Rumphius, Hermann and
other pre-Linnean botanists as well as toLinnaeus
himself.A number
of other plants belonging to thisgroup
areknown
to botanists.
Four
ofthem
are natives of Africaand have come
to light only recently.
In
theEast
Indiestwo
specieshave
longbeen known, but
are littleunderstood as yet.One
of these, Feronia lucida Scheffer,grows
inJava and
is closely related to thewood
apple of India.The
other, the subject of the present note,was
described in 1837by
Blanco, in the first edition of his Flora de Filipinas,under
thename Limonia
glutinosa.He saw
it
growing on Mt.
Arayat, Province of Manila,Luzon
Island,and
noted that itwas
calledmalacabuyao
or tabogby
the Tagals.In the second edition of his Flora de Filipinas, published in 1845,
Blanco
recognized that this plantwas
related to thewood
apple
and renamed
it Feronia ternata.About
1878,Andres
Naves, in editing anew
illustratededition de luxe of Blanco's Flora de Filipinas, recognized that thetabog was more
nearly allied to the bael fruitthan
to thewood
appleand
accordingly transferred it to the genus Aeglemaking
anew
specific
name A.
decandra. In 1904 Merrill restored Blanco's original specificname,
Aegle glutinosa (Bl.) Merrill.An examination
of the typical material in the BotanicalMu- seum
atDahlem
bei Berlin,made by
the writer in June, 1911,showed Limonia
Engleriana, Perkins, tobe

plants of this group.This
resulted in bringing to light anew
species ofwood
applefrom
Indo-China, the type ofa new
genus^ closely related to Feronia.A
reexamination of the tabog,undertaken
at thesame
timewas
facilitatedby
afruitingspecimen
in the NationalHerbarium
collected
by
E.D.
Merrill (No. 3641, Concepci6n, Prov. Tarlac, Luzon,November,
1903),and showed
that this species differsfrom
Beloumarmelos
in flower, fruit, leafand
germination char- acters soprofoundly that itmust be put
in another genus.The stamens
of thetabog
are ten innumber,
being twice asmany
as the petals instead of
very numerous (more than
four times asmany
as the petals) as in thebael fruit.
The ovary
of thetabog
has 8 to 10 cells insteadof 10 to 15
commonly found
inthe bael fruit.
The
fruit is ob- long or long ovalwith low
longi- tudinal ridges corresponding innumber and
position to theseg- ments,and
has a thick leathery rind.The
bael fruit is spherical or pyriform, never ridged,and
has avery
hard,woody
rind.The
cells of thetabog
fruit are lined with aspongy
tissueshowing very
large cavities or vacuoles.Nothing
of the sort isfound
inany
other of the hard-shelled citrous fruits (see fig. 1).The
leaves of thetabog
are persistent instead of deciduous as in the bael fruitand have
smaller,more rounded
lateral leaf- lets.On
germination the cotyledonsbecome
aerial in thetabog but remain hypogeous
in the bael fruit.Already

a subgenus,
Chaetospermum, under
thegenus

genus related to Belou, from which it differs in having persistent leaves with small rounded sessile lateral leaflets, fewer stamens (twice asmany
as the petals), fewer ovarial cells (8 to 10), an oblong ribbed fruit with a thick leathery rindand
cells lined with a spongy tissue containingmany
large cavities orvacuoles (see fig. 1).Leaves persistent, trifoliate, lateral leaflets small, sessile, usually less than one-third as long as the median,
more
or less blunt at the base or even rounded. Terminal leaflet gradually narrowed at the base.Petioles narrowly winged with a joint at the point of attachment of the leaflets. Spines slender, straight, sharp, in pairs at the axils or else one of thespines is replaced
by
a branch. Inflorescences axillary,composedoffrom oneto several flowersonratherlong, slenderpedicels.
Flowers perfect, 5-merous; calyx 5-lobed, petals 5, stamens 10, free.
Pistil with a well developed style
and
a thick rounded stigma. Ovary with 8 to 10 cells, each containingnumerous
ovules. Fruit, oblong, longitudinally ribbed, with a very thick leathery rind,and
with cells (filled with gum?) surrounded with watery tissue containing large cavitiesorvacuoles. Seedsnumerousinthe longnarrow cells,flattened ovate, hairy. Germination—
Cotyledons aerial, not increasing in size;first foliage leaves opposite, broadly ovate, subseriate, sessile, abruptly narrowed at base.

Chaetospermum
differs widelyfrom
all the other hard-shelled citrous fruitsand
constitutes a strikingnew
genus. Itundoubt-
edly belongs to the hard-shelledgroup
of citrous fruits tho it alone does not (so far asknown) have woody
elements in thecortex.
