Many students are drawn to the hospitality industry because they want to enter their own business. There have been many successful examples of the latter throughout the history of the hospitality industry.

The next section explores career planning in relation to the employment decisions you need to make while still in school. If you have chosen the hospitality industry as your career, this section will help you design your career plans.

If you're still undecided, the column will help you think more concretely about the field and give you some ideas about exploring your career through part-time employment. However, if you consider the teaching portion of the benefits mix and your total income, including what you learn, you can—and probably should—choose a job that will add to your professional education. There is another important point to consider in relation to retained earnings and the combination of benefits.

Often the only part-time industry jobs available to students are unskilled. If you think about these jobs in terms of their total income, however, you can change your perspective. While a job as a bus driver or dishwasher may not be very demanding, you can increase your overall earnings with such a job if you decide to learn all you can about the operation.

That way, you can build your own retained earnings—the bank of skills and knowledge that no one can ever take away from you.

While you're thinking about organization, it's also important to note the informal organization, also known as social organization, of the group you're working with. For example, if you are working in the back of the house, you can map the flow of products from the back door (receiving) to storage and from there to preparation. If you're working in the back of the house, you'll mostly be looking at the flow of kitchen and dish workers from the perspective of the kitchen, dish room, or pantry.

A similar analysis of the flow of guests and servers (and plates) can also be done from the front of the house (ie the dining room). Things to look for in the back of house include how quality is assured in food preparation, menu planning, recipes, cooking methods, food control and storage. If you carry dishes or work as a waiter, waitress, or server in a coffee shop, you can learn a lot about operations by observing guests or customers at the front of the house.

Career Opportunities Overseas

They know the issues and can give practical advice on employment and what to expect in terms of pay and working conditions. Even if your summer employer doesn't have a career opportunity for you, a favorable recommendation can greatly boost your career once you graduate. The lesson here is that the record you create on the job can help shape your career later.

If your income needs are modest, you may decide to forego luxuries and take a lower-paying job that offers a superior education. So you would invest in retained earnings: the knowledge that you hope to one day be able to exchange for more income, security and job satisfaction. In this case, you can choose to accept a lower income (but one that you can live on and that is in line with what such jobs pay in your area).

While you shouldn't be indifferent to income, you'll want to focus primarily on what the job can teach you. Because training beyond entry-level basics requires responsibility and access to promotion, you'll want to know about the opportunities for advancement. If the quality of the facility, the food or the service is consistently poor, you can help improve things.

If career advancement, achieving a substantial income, and gaining responsibility—or perhaps just having a manageable work life—are priorities for you, you may want to consider at least interviewing with some of the companies on this list. is, but which you did not have. previously considered.

Competition also exists in the battle for customers at conventions, resorts and tourist destinations. In today's and tomorrow's world, service will be the difference between barely surviving (or worse) and achieving success. An educated and sophisticated customer base is placing increasing emphasis on the value of the goods or services received relative to the price paid in the marketplace.

For example, this helps to partially explain the increasing popularity of the fast-casual dining segment. For example, they are empowered to resolve many of the guest's service issues on the spot. While the white male has been the dominant force in the labor market, the majority of people entering the workforce for the foreseeable future will be women and minorities, such as African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians.

Managers will need a broad background and an openness to many types of people and cultures to thrive in the future.

Leading the Charge in Going Green—Orchard Hotels

After another week, the green group slowly began to see the benefits of using the product properly. In 2007, Orchard Garden Hotel was awarded LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification by San Francisco, the first US hotel to earn this honor, Orchard Garden was only the third hotel in the United States and the fourth in the world. with this certificate.

In 2009, the Orchard Hotel in San Francisco joined its sister property, the Orchard Garden Hotel, in "the green." The first hotel in San Francisco to earn this honor, the Orchard Hotel is the second hotel in California. In the near future, this will not be a trend, but a part of business.

Develop an intimate understanding of "green" hospitality and make it part of the hotel's everyday life.

As we have seen, the hospitality industry includes hotels and restaurants and many other types of businesses that offer shelter and/or food (and entertainment, etc.) to people outside the home. A hospitality manager must therefore keep these three goals in mind: (1) make the guest feel welcome, (2) make sure things work for the guest, and (3) make sure the business continues to provide service. and meet your budget. We've mentioned many reasons to study in a hospitality or culinary arts program, including past experience in the field, interests in the field, and ambitions in the field.

We pointed out that in the hospitality industry, you can learn a lot from studying the physical plant and how the front and back of the house are managed. We then moved on to ways to get a job – including always having a CV and preparing for an interview – and how to make the most of any job you land. We also noted that supply and demand operate in the hospitality job market as they do elsewhere, suggesting that what is most popular in terms of employment may not necessarily translate to the best opportunity.

Finally, we began our ongoing discussion of the hospitality industry's outlook, which appeared to be bright but full of change and competition.

Key Words and Concepts

We also discussed the meaning of work and how to get the most out of a job, weighing both retained earnings and the mix of work and benefits.
