The apostles did their part to preach Christ, but Luke makes it clear that it was "the Lord [who] daily added to their number those who were saved" (Acts 2:47). In his chapter "A Counseling Primer from the Great Cloud of Witnesses," in Scripture and Counseling: God's Word for Life in a Broken World, Bob Kellemen uses the phrase "biblical counseling."8 He defines biblical counseling as "Scripture-oriented , prayer-shaped ministry dedicated to persons alone or in groups, in institutions sacred and profane.”9 This project relies on Kellemen's definition and also.

CHAPTER 2

After the healing of the blind beggar, Jesus and the crowd quickly stumble upon Zacchaeus. Readers also hear hints of the cross when Jesus tells Peter that he did not need a bath since he was already clean.

CHAPTER 4

Therefore, I knew that these callers would become well acquainted with the purpose, research methodology and biblical basis of the project and the theoretical issues associated with it. All lesson headings are taken from the headings of each questionnaire: “Love of God,” “He Wants It All.” That the commandment to “love the Lord thy God” is a commandment to respond to God's love.

He Wants It All.” Jesus not only tells the inquirers and hearers that they are to love God but also quantifies that love by use of the word “all,” not just

View of Self" and "Love of Others." For four weeks, with Matthew 22:34-40 as a backdrop, participants unpacked supporting scriptures as God's answer to their answers to HAQ.3. A quick stop at Deuteronomy 6:5 would serve as an eye-opener that the command was a response of love, because when Moses gives this command to Israel, Israel had come to experience God's love and care for them in dramatic ways in the midst of terrifying circumstances. The participants would initially know of God's passionate love for them through the historical events surrounding Jesus' sacrificial death, which begins in Genesis 1-3.

Love of Others.” Finally, lesson 4 would look at the desired end of the second greatest commandment, which is loving others (remember, self-love is

I knew I had to start with the students researching the current need for pastoral care within CPBC and end with the team experiencing a pastoral care session, all of which were housed in and would be collected from chapters 1-3 and the appendices of this book. project.13. A syllabus was prepared to think clearly about the objectives of the training, to communicate the expectations of the trainees and to identify the project document as required. The training would consist of five sessions and the course would be titled "Introduction to Spiritual Care."14.

Introduction of and Biblical Basis for Soul Care.” Again, in an effort to get the trainees to see what birthed the project, I would begin the introduction to

The three learning objectives of Session 1 would be for trainees to (1) develop a working definition of spiritual care, (2) appreciate the need for spiritual care within the CPBC membership process, and (3) study three of Jesus . From the reading of chapter 1, the lesson plan for session 1 asked the trainees to first point out the factors that brought to light the need for soul care, which were low church retention and poor assimilation of new members. Specifically, the reading allowed them to observe the soul-care encounters of Jesus with the Samaritan woman, the woman with the issue, and Zacchaeus the tax collector.

Theoretical Issues Related to Soul Care.” In this second session’s lesson, I would move from defining soul care and identifying soul care actions

The "look" exercise would allow trainees to identify and empathize with potential members as they put themselves in their shoes by recalling and sharing their own membership decision stories. CPBC's member work is therefore primarily driven by Jesus' mission and mandate and God's church work. The "Train" section, the application portion of the lesson plan, would require trainees to declare a "day of intentionality" where they moved around like Jesus, seeking to see people as Jesus saw them, like sheep in need of a shepherd.

The Practical Issues Related to Soul Care.” The six Christian Education Committee team members and the one non-committee member would continue

The heart also experiences suffering simply because of the fallen world that humanity lives in. Therefore, the objectives of this lesson included leading trainees to (1) understand the functions of the heart and the heart's struggle, which is idolatry, to love something or someone more than God; (2) examine the impact that plagues and persistent suffering can have on the heart; (3) examine the role of the church in addressing problems of sin and suffering; and (4) make sense of parts 1 and 2 of the four-part HAQ, the instruments used to initiate conversations in the pastoral care sessions with potential members. Interns will also become familiar with the instrument used in The Starting Point to open up pastoral conversations and to discern the hearts of prospective members; therefore, the second part of this lesson will introduce trainees to parts 1 and 2 of the four-part HAQ, "Love of God" and "He Wants It All." This.

The Practice of Soul Care, Part One.” As the soul care team, the team would be entrusted with discerning the spiritual heart condition of prospective

Through part 3 of the session 4 lesson, I would lay out before them the recruitment plan for getting participants, potential members, to The Starting Point, soul care talk sessions. At this point in the training, the trainees would have withdrawn from the need for soul care sessions. Regarding this friend, I would challenge the trainees to consider how that friend might answer the Love for God assessment questions, the guiding scripture, and the teaching of the supporting scriptures.

The first training session required the trainees to read chapters 1 and 2 of this project paper. The team was immediately won over by the need of the project

In addition, the pastors and I met to share our evaluations of the participants and sessions and to discuss the evaluations of the participants of the sessions. There were four teaching sessions; the last lesson was the practicum, an actual starting point soul care session. In this session, students got a taste of the theoretical and historical issues associated with pastoral care by reading the first 15 pages of Chapter 3.

The last nineteen pages of chapter 3 were read for a discussion of and introduction to the church’s response to sin and suffering; how the church can provide

They had to consider what might compete and perhaps win their hearts away from Jesus, and again looked at the story of the rich young ruler (Matthew 19:16-22). Coming into session 4, I was confident that the trainees understood and agreed with what prompted looking at pastoral care within the membership process at

The first goal of the project was to determine the membership interest of potential members, the starting point prospects who entered the membership process within the last 18 months, which were configured around the time the development and implementation periods began. The primary purpose of the call was to gather participants in one of the three four-week Starting Point (soul care) sessions. After sharing, with the help of the supporting scriptures, I gave what I called God's answer to their heart judgments.

Love of God.” In lesson 1, I began as follows

If they were not interested in attending the Starting Point, then they would be asked about their interest in attending the next membership orientation class and that yes or no answer would also be recorded. Required “Agreement to Participate” statements were read before participants wrote their responses to the HAQ questions and provided their ratings in the final session. The 1984 NIV Bibles were placed in each place, as this was the version on which the HAQ questions were based.

He Wants It All.” I hooked the participants by introducing the HAQ as follows

The point driven by the supporting scriptures was that the command to love God is a command to respond to His love.

Love of Others.” Delighting at the ease in the air, I began hooking participants into the “Love of Others” focus this way

The sigh of relief did not last long because the panel awaited the biblical counseling training plan, as I was even more convinced of the necessity for the church to be prepared for one-on-one intensive pastoral care conversations. I knew that the desired outcomes, retention and assimilation, were all too often unrealized, and in reviewing the process I noticed that it was one-sided - the potential members knew the CPBC in some detail, but the CPBC did not know the potential members to a acceptable degree. Perhaps the pastoral care interviews could reveal these reasons, but first the potential members had to be identified and their continued interest in membership had to be determined.

The Soul Care Instruments

The "conversation starter" category received an exemplary rating of 95 percent, as 1 panelist considered the other-centered nature of the questions sufficient. On Part 1 of the HAQ, most individuals chose between "lukewarm" and "simmering" as their description of their relationship with God. On Part 4 of the HAQ, those who had been examples of God's love for the participants were parents, spouses and friends, the intimate people in their lives.

The Soul Care Leaders

The effectiveness of these pastoral care sessions depended on my preparation and the level of transparency allowed by all participants, including the pastoral care team. Two pastoral care leaders, including myself, were a constant in all three four-week rounds of Het Startpunt. In Parts 3 and 4 of the HAQ, "Look at the Self" and "Love for Others," the participants seemed healthier.

The Plan for More Intensive Soul Care

A third weakness of the project was realized immediately after the first round of The Starting Point: There were no participants in the second and third rounds. Fortunately, two Sundays before the start of the second round, I held a discipleship orientation at 9.30. All three agreed to participate; two were asked to participate in the second round, while one was asked to be part of the third round.

CATEGORY 4: LOVE OF OTHERS Lesson Title: “Love of Others”

This panel evaluated the effectiveness of the questionnaire in generating spiritual care conversations and revealing spiritual care needs. The leaders were provided with a spiritual readiness/maturity level assessment to evaluate each of their group members' participation in the soul care discussion sessions. The soul care team used the leaders' assessments to map out the next steps for the prospective members' spiritual growth and body-life connections.

LOVE FOR OTHERS 1. Have they known God’s love through

Prospective members who participated in the soul care discussion group sessions rated the sessions' usefulness to them.
