CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

A. Background

English nouns are very important things to learn for beginners in learning English because part of the nouns can be used to interact directly in English. English nouns consist of two parts, namely, concrete nouns, and abstract nouns. Concrete nouns are nouns that are visible to the eye, can be felt, touched, and can be held.

Therefore, learning English which is preceded by learning English nouns will make it easier for students to learn English.

Learning English nouns has been taught such a long time at SMPN Satap Pombuttu, however, learning English nouns has not been able to achieve the target as expected by the teacher at SMPN Satap Pombuttu. There are many factors that influence the students' failure to learn English nouns, the first factor is that students are not proficient in Indonesian so that students find it difficult to express every noun in English. The second is the teacher's method of teaching nouns that are not supportive. The method used by the teacher at school is still very simple, the teacher only writes down English nouns on the blackboard and then asks the students to memorize at home. Methods are very important, and very much needed in schools to improve students' English nouns, in line with the opinion of Mardiah Kalsum Nasution who stated that learning methods are needed in schools to improve the learning process in the classroom.1

The lack of English nouns possessed by first-grade at SMPN Satap Pombuttu is a very serious phenomenon for English teachers at SMPN Satap Pombuttu.

Students are not at all interested in learning English nouns, students only reflect when the teaching and learning process of English nouns takes place in class, students feel bored learning with the teacher's teaching method that only explains and gives rote assignments while teaching if this is allowed to continue continuously students will find it increasingly difficult to learn English nouns and students will never be interested in learning English and it is very worrying that it will get worse if it is not addressed immediately.

Outdoor Larning Style is one of the strategies that can be used to overcome the learning phenomenon of first-grade students of SMPN Satap Pombuttu to make it better, as expressed by Sakdiah Wati in his research entitled, The Learning Model Of Outdoor Learning to the Ability to Write Leterature to Collage Students in Palembang.2 that outdoor learning is one of the strategies that can be an alternative for teachers in the classroom because it is considered to improve the quality of the teaching and learning process. It was emphasized again in the International Journal of Education by Candra Hadi Asmara, Khoirul Anwar, and Ribeh Najib Muhammad that, outdoor learning activities have a beneficial impact not only on children but also on adults.3 From some of these opinions, it has been proven that outdoor learning is one of the interesting strategies used in the learning process so that researchers have concluded that outdoor learning is a learning strategy that can be

used as a tool to improve the English learning nouns process and improve students English nouns of the first-grade students of SMPN Satap Pombuttu.

Outdoor Learning has been carried out by several previous researchers, namely, Indah Miftah Awaliah conducted research “The Effect Of Outdoor Learning Activities On Students' Reading Comprehension”. This study aims to determine the effect of outdoor learning on reading comprehension of second-year students, especially in descriptive texts4 and also Sakdiah Wati conducted research “Learning Model Of Outdoor Learning To The Ability To Write Literature To College Students In Palembang”. This research aims to create an outdoor learning model in writing creative and innovative literary works.5 In these studies, no one has researched the improvement of English nouns through outdoor learning so that the researchers took the initiative to conduct research based on the findings regarding the lack of nouns of the first-grade students of SMPN Satap Pombuttu, Polman through Outdoor Learning Style.

This research is a Classroom Action Research which is intended to describe well the learning process and the improvement of English nouns through the Outdoor Learning Style. The research was conducted at SMPN Satap Pombuttu, Polman using a classroom action research design to answer research problems.

Specifically, this study aims to determine the improvement of students 'English nouns and to describe the Outdoor Learning Style strategy. In this case, the researcher conducted a study entitled; "Improving Students Nouns Trought Outdoor

B. Research Problem

How is the Outdoor Learning Style able to improve students’ nouns of the first- grade of SMPN Satap Pombuttu, Polman?

C. Research Objective

To improve students' English nouns trought Outdoor Learning Style of the first- grade students of SMPN Satap Pombuttu, Polman

D. Research Significance

The findings of this study are expected to provide information to:

1. Improving the teaching and learning process of the teachers, especially teaching English nouns using Outdoor Learning Style.

2. This study provides useful information for teachers and students of SMP Negeri Satap Pombuttu so that it can help students improve their knowledge of English nouns in the future.

3. The result of this research can be used as a description for the other students of the English Education Department to conduct another research on the topic.
