1.1. Background of the Study
English is known as a common language used all over the world, especially in the field of education (Rao, 2019). In the Indonesian education system, English is applied in Curriculum 2013 which English become a compulsive subject which is taught in Junior High School. Learning English is essential for Indonesian students.
Therefore, in learning English, students must be able to learn four skills such as reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Reading is considered a key skill to be used in collaboration at school and throughout life (Amin, 2019). This is because, to seek information and gain knowledge, reading English books is a must and is often used as the language of instruction (Sultana, 2021).
Reading is defined as an interactive process in which readers form meaning from a text by applying effective reading strategies (Gilakjani & Sabouri, 2016). Reading is one of the main sources of knowledge and it is also the basis of self- formation to acquire knowledge (Naibaho, 2022). Furthermore, Reading aims to understand the text being read, and the content provides meaning for the reader (Neugebauer &
Blair, 2020). Therefore, reading becomes a way to happiness for someone because reading trains skills in critical thinking in every individual, and reading fosters a sense of caring.
Reading comprehension is the ability of individuals to process and understand the content of texts where they can process and gain knowledge from
what they have read (Syamsu & Agussalim, 2020). However, understanding English texts is more complex in terms of their importance in an educational environment (Efendy & Sulistyo, 2019). In the learning process, it is often found that reading problems are found to be deficiencies in vocabulary, the use of inappropriate grammar, and reading techniques that are rarely known by students (Davoudi and Yousefi, 2015).
Based on an observation at SMP N 10 Tanjungpinang, an English teacher of the ninth grade stated that the students lack of media to evaluate students' ability to read so that students did not have feedback on their learning and additional support.
Inadequate worksheet design where existing worksheets did not meet the needs of students. Which results in confusion for students and hinders their ability to understand the text. Finally, students found it difficult to understand the content of the text where the content is too complex, or used language that is unfamiliar to students could make it difficult for them to understand the text.
In this research, the researcher developed the worksheet. There are some reasons the researcher developed a worksheet. First, worksheets can assist students remember what they've learned. In addition, students can improve their comprehension and retention of content, especially when it comes to reading skills.
Second, worksheets may be used to diversify learning and fulfill the various requirements of students. Worksheets can be used to challenge advanced learners or to give more help to struggling students. Third, worksheets provide students with chances for individual practice, which can assist improve students’
confidence and responsibility for their own learning. Finally, worksheets can be used as a sort of evaluation to check students' comprehension of the topic. Worksheets may give teachers with important insight on what students have learned and where they may need extra assistance.
Based on the problem above, the researcher became interested in and attempted to developed learning media for students' reading using worksheets with the research title “Developing Students' Reading Worksheet on Report Text for Ninth Grade".
Therefore, the researcher conducted Research and Development (RnD) by adapting ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). It is hoped that this media could be used for teachers and students.
