1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background of The Problem

English is needed to be learnt in the globalization era. Even though in Indonesia, English still play role as a foreign language, it is necessary to be mastered by Indonesian nowadays (Marlina, 2012). Through Indonesian education, English can be learnt starting from Junior High School. H. D. Brown (2001) states that Junior High School students are categorized as young learners. Teaching EFL to young learners needs such a big effort, as the teacher also has to help them to adapt, learn and develop their competence and skills in a new language.

Language skills are required for mastering English. There are four language skills, and the most crucial to learning the English language and communication is listening skills (Hamouda, 2013). Diptoadi (2009) said that listening is the first skill which junior high school teens need to develop before they feel ready to use other skills. Teaching listening for EFL young learners will not be easy, because this is the first time they learn a new language.

Teacher have to make the meaning clear and easily, so young learners can understand what the speaker said. To make a clear explanation, we can use some pictures, gestures, or body language. This step will facilitate the students to understand the English spoken material easier.

Nowadays, Indonesian schools using the curriculum Merdeka Belajar and the learning activities have been affected by the pandemic of Covid 19. To face this pandemic era, the government has set up online learning. Susiloati (2020) found that there are several challenges in listening class during this pandemic, such as the system or application used, and also the preparation of materials.

Presenting simple and easy to understand materials will be very helpful during online learning. Also, teachers must understand what difficulties students face, it will help teachers to create and develop effective and interesting online learning strategies for students, especially in listening materials. To this end, a teacher should be skillful at the online technology and innovative in teaching techniques.

One way to make fun learning is by using an interactive learning technique, such as a game. Sari (2018) states that by using games, young learners become more active since it increases their mood when studying English. Martin (1995) wrote, a game is any fun activity which gives young learners the opportunity to practice a foreign language in a relaxed and an enjoyable way in language learning. Therefore, it is highly recommended that teachers give kinds of relaxation techniques, such as games, to keep the students’ anxiety and stress away (Raghunathan, 2001).

Based on the researcher’s observation, there were some problem that the researcher found. The problem was the students were unable to listen about the English material well. That’s because the learners had limited knowledge and unfamiliarity with the vocabulary makes students did not get the point of the

material. Nevertheless, the teachers also used a monotonous learning strategy and technique in the learning process. It makes students get bored quickly, so they don't have any motivation and interest in learning English. In conclusion, the main problem is the lack of mastering listening skills for students and also teacher use unattractive media, which makes students feel bored and have less motivation in the learning process.

Based on the conditions above, to overcome these problems, researchers used games as the learning technique. In this study, the game that researchers will use is a "listen and draw" activity to teach listening to a descriptive text in the classroom. Through this research, researchers want to see whether the

"listen and draw" activity can have an effect on the learning process of a class.
