CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of The Study
One of major linguistic is study about language. The language itself deal with such pattern is called morphology. According to Booij (2005:7) the term ‘morphology’
refers to the study of the internal structure of words, and of the systematic form meaning correspondences between words. Meanwhile according to Lieber (2009:2) morphology is the study of word formation, including the ways new words are coined in the languages of the world, and the way forms of words are varied depending on how they’re used in sentences. It means that in morphology we know how the words process become a new word.
In English morphology, there are some types of word formation. Based on Martina Wagner (2010) word formation processes including derivation, compounding, blending, acronym, borrowing, neologism or coinage as well as new words in English and discuses why new words are needed. Compounding is the process of bringing together two or more words into a single entity that has one meaning of the word.
Based on O‘Grady and Dobrovolsky (1996:139) “English orthography is not consistent in representing compounds since they are sometimes written as single words, sometimes with an intervening hyphen, and sometime as separate words”.
According to Crystal (2002:128) “Most English vocabulary arises by making new lexemes out of old ones either by adding an affix to previously existing forms, altering their word class, or combining them to produce compounds”. Forms a word by adding affixes or without affixes can generate new lexemes. From the formation, a word may have a different meaning from the previous word. It would be great if some new words which we have never heard before may found. Word classes are always said to be one of the discussions in the analysis of language.
This research took some articles in agricultural magazine naming Farmer’s Weekly magazine. This magazine is an agricultural magazine based in South Africa, the magazine crosses all racial, gender and age divides, focusing instead on the objectives, interests and values that drive its readers. Everything the brand does is to forward and serve the interest of a sustainable agricultural sector. Farmer’s Weekly not only spread in country but also in the world, it gives the information for the society to inform agriculture issues. This magazine is an agricultural magazine which contains some news and articles in one magazine. Magazine is one form of communication that uses language to convey information to the reader. the words used in this agricultural magazine there must be some use of terms in agriculture that are seldom heard and not easily understood. Since agricultural terms continues to
The discussion in this research is under the field of morphology, specifically the words formation processes on agricultural terms in theFarmer’sWeekly Magazine on edition 6 June 2017, why the researcher choose that edition because 6 June 2017 is the newest one when the researcher conduct the analysis. Moreover in every month there is the new magazine come out. Besides, the writer also classifies the type and meaning of each term. Therefore, the writer limits the research by focusing on the theory of the type and meaning of compound words by using the theory Rochelle Lieber (2009). Lieber (47) divided the type of compounds attributive, coordinative, and Subordinative compounds, also in the analysis include the endocentric or exocentric varieties. The meanings want to use Stephen Ullmann (1962). The meaning of the compound words interrelate in such a way that a new meaning of the compound words. Ullmann (81) stated that “every compound contains words which are arbitrary and opaque, without any connection between sound and sense, and others which are at least to some degree motivated and transparent”.
1.2 Research Question
1. What are the types of compound words found inFarmer’s WeeklyMagazine?
2. What are the meaning of compound words found inFarmer’s WeeklyMagazine?
1.3 Research Objective
This research aims to take compound words in the article of Farmer’s Weekly
magazine and identifying each of them according to the concept and theory. To give the explanation compound words meaning to make the word easily to understand for the readers.
1.4 Uses of The study
The research is to make an expanded these two point following uses, theoretical use and practical use:
1.4.1 Theoretical Use
This research is expected will practically useful for students in increasing the knowledge of the study of linguistics in the morphology, especially compound words.
Besides, this research can be used by the readers to understand the creation of new words.
1.4.2 Practical Use
This research give as a reference for students or other people who are interest in conducting the same research. Further to increase reading, this analysis can help the
1.5 Scope of The Study
Related with the research question above, this research aims to explain the types and meaning of compound words in some agriculture terms in the article Farmer’s Weekly magazine.
