Lemke, "The Intelligent Design of Humans: The Meaning of the Imago Dei for Theological Anthropology" (paper presented at the Southwest Regional Meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society, Houston, March 2008), 8. According to Lenski, Epistle to the Romans, 791, "the genitive denotes origin or possession: God's own tool." Morris, Romans, 463, adds that. As Carter and Ford, two "born-again" Christians, sparred on the national stage, Newsweek considered 1976 to be "the year of the evangelicals."48.

According to the editor-in-chief of Christianity Today, "the evangelical recovery after Watergate sparked a long-hidden sense that evangelicals should try to take a stronger role in the affairs of the country, particularly through political avenues." According to Harold Brown, "the United States Supreme Court's 1973 abortion-on-demand decision, Roe v. Wade, was something of a spark in the powder keg for Schaeffer." According to Ed Dobson, Schaeffer's militancy was the "fundamental ideology" of the Christian right.

Paul Weyrich's frustration grew to the point that he said, "The religious right was lovely." Ibid., 197. Phyllis Schlafly referred to Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy as "the billboard for impeachment." 133 Marsden, Fundamentalism and Culture, 246, says evangelicals were driven into the political arena by "the need to restore America's original Christian heritage."

He shared that being American is like "the fourth of July and apple pie." In other words, one cannot overstate the significance of the American Revolution.

Government: From Creation to the Fall (Genesis 1-3)

With the exception of one law, everything was at the discretion of mankind to manage and enjoy. QUESTION: The land, the sea and the animals have always needed supervision, but how would man, as a sinner, try to control creation? Man was given the right to benevolently rule over creation, to govern it in God's stead.

But after the Fall, man no longer desired to rule in a way that pleased God, nor was it enough to rule creation.

Government: From the Fall to the Flood (Genesis 4-9)

Authority to rule the land, the sea and the animals in ways that please God. A letter to a young pastor about the leadership of the local church commands prayer "for kings and all who are in high positions." Paul exhorted Timothy to pray for their political leaders. Pray for proconsuls and governors, pray for local leaders in Ephesus, pray for the senators in Rome, even pray for Caesar.

What are some of the requests you have asked of God when you pray for your leaders. It is good, and it is pleasing in the eyes of God, our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth." The God "who wants all men to be saved" desires that we pray that "all men" be saved.

Paul’s Prayer

Paul was not concerned that the emperor should have the wisdom or power to rule well, but that he should turn to Christ. In response, they burned churches and destroyed families as the emperor challenged the world to persecute Christians.

Paul’s Passion for the Lost

Circle at least two from the list above and commit to praying for each one each day throughout this hour. Consider some of the following verses that you could use to pray for our political leaders. A great way to begin to overcome this problem is to pray through different scriptures.

Every Sunday the church has offered a breakfast of sausage, pancakes and eggs during the morning service, and it seems that more than 100 homeless people attend. Everyone expressed their appreciation for helping the homeless, but they encouraged the church to stop transporting homeless people into their neighborhoods. Although the two sides reached a settlement, this was really a battle for the Church to fight.

Romans 13:1-7

It is only a slight exaggeration to say that the history of the interpretation of Romans 13:1-7 is the history of attempts to avoid its obvious meaning. QUESTION: Peter links submission to living "as people who are free." How can a rebellious, rebellious spirit actually enslave you? For the sake of the Lord, submit to every human institution, whether to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good.

For it is the will of God, that by doing good you should silence the ignorance of foolish people. When we give ourselves to poor leaders, even striving to bless them, our behavior can "silence the ignorance of foolish people." More literally, submission puts a "muzzle" on the ignorant. Be encouraged that God can use your submissive spirit to convince and bring to salvation those who see it (1 Pet 2:12).

The Condition for Civil Disobedience

According to the Declaration of Independence, the rebellion was justified because the King of Great Britain had become "destructive" to the "inalienable rights" of his American colonies. However, none of the reasons accuse the king of restricting worship or forcing his subjects to sin. It is essential to observe that one authority was to be obeyed if another was to be obeyed.

There was no conceivable way in which the apostles could obey God and man at the same time. Civil disobedience is a forced decision that comes when all other options have been completely exhausted. When there is no conceivable way to obey God and man, God's will is clear.

The Extent of Civil Disobedience

God had called these men to preach and the authorities ordered them to stop preaching in Jerusalem.

The Motive for Civil Disobedience

Look up each example in the chart below and fill in the remaining two columns. Fundamentalists insisted on doctrinal purity and separation from the world, while the New Evangelicals insisted on evangelistic outreach and engagement with the world. QUESTION: Consider the effects of theology in class as you complete the detailed outline.

Making America Great (1800-1865)

Cracks in the Evangelical Foundation (1865-1915)

Reclaiming Christian America (1915-1925)

Dozens of anti-evolutionary organizations were formed and fought politically to eradicate any hint of evolutionary teaching in public schools.

A Great Reversal (1925-1940)

Reforming Fundamentalism (1940-1970)

From Saving Souls to Saving America (1970-1979)

Married to the Republican Party (1980-1997)

Still, Reagan gave the Christian right a sense of importance early in their relationship. They gave the President everything they had, and in return, he gave them "nonsensical access." The Christian right could boast of little. Pat Robertson was so angry with the Republican Party that he ran for President in 1988 and founded the Christian Coalition (1989).

Evangelicals won many political contests, and their organizations were flooded with financial support in the early 1990s.

The Disillusioned and the Determined (1998-2008)

His faith was seen as their faith, his initiatives as their initiatives, and his popularity translated into their popularity. Media coverage of evangelicals was not negative during the president's first term (2000-2004). Yet even evangelicals in the Bush administration, such as Michael Gerson and Peter Wehner, admitted that the Christian right had no influence on America.

When Dobson retired in 2009, he lamented that all the battles to save America were now lost: "We are overrun with evil."

From the Wilderness to the Promised Land (2009- )

Soon we'll be cooking up the whole class in five principles for engaging the political arena. All the ills from which America suffers can be traced back to the teachings of evolution. Cardinal Sadolet learned of Calvin's expulsion and wrote a heartfelt letter asking the lost city to return to the faith.

The city council of Geneva asked Calvin to answer on their behalf, and the Reformer thundered before the Cardinal. Do you think, in general, this zeal has been a biblical pursuit of God's glory or a man-centered pursuit. The purpose of this final class is to provide five principles for biblical engagement in the political arena.

A Biblical Concept of Government

A Biblical Attitude Toward Political Leaders

A Biblical Foundation for Political Positions

In the 1990s, Ralph Reed encouraged evangelicals to describe themselves as "pro-family." While evangelicals still affirm the authority of the Bible, they rarely use it to support their political positions. Margaret Mitchell of the University of Chicago came to this conclusion after studying hundreds of evangelical websites, statements and articles. If God's Word is the basis of our thinking and reasoning, we must show it.

When we talk about transgenderism, we explain God's authority to create life and that He created human life as male and female (Gen 5:2). These short answers are not meant to end all discussion, but they elevate God's Word and show an unbelieving world that God's Word is our foundation.

A Biblical Unity in the Political Arena

But as Russell Moore explains, "We end up with a public witness where Mormon talk show hosts and serially monogamous casino magnates and prosperity evangelical preachers are welcomed into our ranks, regardless of the violence they do to the gospel. 'The faith once and for all delivered to the saints.' is eroding all around us in America, and biblical Christianity has almost no more The Jews had succeeded in extending the observance of the Mosaic Law to these cities, even the unfortunate ceremonial observances.

Surely Paul should have made common cause with teachers who almost agreed with him; surely he should have applied to them the great principle of Christian unity. In fact, however, Paul did nothing of the sort; and it is only because he (and others) did nothing of the kind that the Christian Church exists today.

A Biblical Mission for Political Action
