TASK 1
CODE OF ETHICS : NUTRITIONIST
Code of Ethics can be interpreted as a pattern of rules, procedures, signs, ethical guidelines in carrying out an activity or work. The purpose of a code of ethics is to protect unprofessional actions, increase professional dedication, and maintain a conducive professional environment.
The code of ethics serves as a link between norms and values and services, to prevent interference from other parties that can be detrimental, and to prevent conflicts.
In this assignment, the profession that I will discuss is Nutritionist. A nutritionist is a profession in the health sector whose job is to maintain and improve community nutrition.
Nutritionists provide guidance and control nutrition in hospitals, health centers, companies, schools, or other institutions. Given the breadth of issues related to nutrition, a nutritionist will often interact and collaborate with individuals, peers, communities, government institutions, and others. Therefore, Nutritionists need to have a code of ethics as a guide in carrying out their duties with the aim that the values and norms of professional ethics are always practiced by each Nutritionist when doing their duties.
Nutritionists have quite a lot of codes of ethics, including a code of ethics of obligations to the public, obligations to clients, obligations to the community, obligations to fellow professionals, obligations to work partners, and obligations to the profession and themselves.
This series of codes of ethics was compiled by the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia and made into a Decree of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia No 374/Menkes/SK/III/2007. The specific objectives of the decree include maintaining and improving professional nutrition for individuals and groups and preventing nutrition malpractice.
In the general obligation chapter, there are 8 articles, one of which reads "Nutritionists are obliged to always carry out their profession honestly, sincerely and fairly." In the chapter on obligations towards clients, there are 6 points, one of which reads "Nutritionists are obliged to provide information to clients precisely and clearly, so as to enable clients to understand and want to decide for themselves based on the profession." Furthermore, there are 6 points in the chapter on obligations to the community, the second point reads "Nutritionists always carry out food and nutrition supervision activities so as to prevent nutritional problems in the community". Meanwhile, the sixth point reads "Nutritionists in promoting or authorizing certain food products are obliged to always not in a way that is wrong or causes misinterpretation or misleads the public." In this sense, a nutritionist must be careful in choosing a product to promote because if there is a mistake in the product, it can mislead the general public.
The next chapter is the obligation towards fellow professionals and work partners which has 3 points. The third point reads "Nutritionists are obliged to always disseminate the latest knowledge and skills to fellow professionals and work partners." The last one is the chapter on obligations to the profession and oneself has 8 important points. The first point reads
"Nutritionists are obliged to obey, protect, and uphold the provisions proclaimed by the
profession." While the last point reads, "Nutritionists are obliged to always maintain the good name of the profession and make the professional organization proud."
However, not all nutritionists can comply with the entire code of ethics. Some cases of violation of the nutritionist code of ethics often occur with various problems and reasons. In this assignment, 2 examples of cases of violations of the nutritionist code of ethics are given and discussed.
Competition between one nutritionist and another is tough, especially if one of the nutritionist's friends or relatives is better known in the community. In order to increase personal popularity, a nutritionist vilify his or her fellow profession by demonizing, making false information, and spreading slander that is not true through stories told to clients. This clearly violates the nutritionist's code of ethics based on the Decree of the Central Leadership Council of the Indonesian Nutritionist Association Number: 3229 / SK / DPP-PERSAGI / X / 2018 concerning the Improvement of the Nutritionist Code of Ethics Article 16 which reads
"Every Nutritionist treats his fellow professionals as he himself would like to be treated."
Job competition is also felt by fellow athletes, even might tighter than the nutritionist profession. Athletes are certainly provided with special nutritionists to maintain stamina and fitness in order to compete optimally for a match. However, not all athletes are treated fairly by the nutritionist because one of the athletes is a close relative or family member. The nutritionist provides the wrong information and nutritional guidance to rivals of his relatives.
This is obviously a violation of the code of ethics based on the Decree of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia No 374 / Menkes / SK / III / 2007 which reads
"Nutritionists in carrying out their profession are obliged not to be influenced by personal interests including receiving money other than proper compensation in accordance with their services, even with the knowledge of the client / community (where the nutritionist is employed)."
