To my mom, Grace, and dad, James Sr., who provided for me and taught me the value of hard work and dedication, and to Crystal, Justin, and Sharice, my siblings who have walked with me through life with love and support me through the depths of my educational journey - you have been my anchor. Thanks to the staff at the Writing Center and all of my editors for channeling the raw passion on the page into a comprehensible product. To Leslie Harris, a constant encourager who survived cancer and proofread all my letters as part of her lifelong recovery.

The rest of my life spent in love with you is far beyond any dream that could ever come true. Bob and Pat invited me to the table and helped me understand the Bible in an impactful way. To my Koinonia Bible Church family for encouraging, accepting and inspiring me to use my gifts to the fullest extent possible.

I am thankful for my best friends in Kansas City and the best roommates I could ever ask for.

Tribulations and hardships are described vividly in the lives of believers so that they can imitate the life of Jesus. The believers' strength lies in the hope of salvation and future residence and union with Jesus Christ. 11 Guthrie says that Paul "insists that the suffering experienced by authentic pastors has a purpose: to advance the gospel in the world." Guthrie, 2 Corinthians, 249.

For Paul, life in the Spirit was his hope for renewal and revival through God's power, and this lessened the sting of suffering.13 Paul persevered, even though his body was subject to illness, vulnerability, weakness and the aging process. Resilience appears conceptually in Scripture through the terminology of endurance, perseverance and steadfastness, all of which produce hope and maturity.16 The. In the NT [it is] the mark of a man who is not swayed by even the greatest trials and sufferings from his purpose and his loyalty to faith and piety." Bible Study Tools, "Hupomone," accessed September 27, 2019, .

Endurance produces the ability or strength to withstand hardship through demonstrated strength.21 David Forney describes the scriptural concept of endurance as “the ability to bear all things in such a way that the hardship becomes.

The result of these trials was the testing of faith which produced the biblical concept of steadfastness or endurance. Faith is not just merely belief in

Instead of anger, believers received justification through faith in Jesus Christ and peace with God.

Believers have obtained justification by faith in Jesus Christ and peace with God rather than wrath. Peace with God “represents harmonious

Willard says, "The outward life of the individual becomes an expression or natural flow of the character and teachings of Jesus." Willard concludes that the path of the authentic human person involved in Christian spiritual formation is “Seen in the people of Jesus Christ throughout the ages. Similarly, only spiritually mature Christians, as the light of the world, will be able to illuminate and give direction to society. Mbennah, “The Purpose of Maturity in Ephesians. Thielman also asserts that the mature man does not refer to "the individual believer, but to the church." Paul's letters are consistent about the unity of the believer and the body of Christ.

The convergent research design brought together quantitative findings from a resilience assessment, a spiritual maturity assessment, and a qualitative interview to “gain a more complete understanding of an issue.”5 The quantitative portion of. Certain traits were asked in a negative way, so the answers had to be reversed.6 Data from the TDA portion provided results measuring the spiritual maturity of first-year students.7 Statistical mean of each of the nine. Data analysis began with visual inspection and descriptive analysis to determine data trends.9 The nine TDA attributes and the four ICSR resilience factors were treated as independent variables. Salkind says, “The t-test for dependent means involves comparing the means from each group of scores and focuses on the differences between the scores.”11 A variance of zero means that every data value is the same.

Salkind argues that “one variable does not 'cause' the others, and the presence of one does not mean that the other will be present. I think this is the biggest area where I think I've come closest to giving up. It will be for God's glory.” The interviewees reported receiving constant and meaningful encouragement from a mentor or member.

CONCLUSION

Involvement in a relational community was crucial to spiritual growth and development of resilience in the first year of college. Jean Clinton postulates that hope is a key feature of resilience that aids adaptation, viewing yourself through strengths over weaknesses, and giving meaning to life.4 The associated characteristics of discipleship intersect with intentionality. Angela Duckworth has determined that a key to a passion for something higher than oneself is the long-term loyalty and deep commitment maintained over many years that increase an individual's perseverance.5 The assessments suggest that students used personal resources and self-sacrifice for the sake of others.

5 Deborah Perkins-Gough, “The Significance of Grit: A Conversation with Angela Lee Duckworth,” Educational Leadership 71, no. 12 John David Trentham states: “This might indicate that students who commit to vocational education prior to college or at the beginning of college tend to find that Christian institutions are best suited to provide them with the most beneficial college experience and training in the light of their career. intentions." John David Trentham, "Epistemological Development in Pre-Ministry Undergraduates: A Cross-Institutional Application of the Perry Scheme," (PhD diss., The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Involvement in a relational community was critical to spiritual growth and formation of resilience in the first academic year.

Jack Balswick, Pamela King, and Kevin Reimer explain that "community of faith provides an intergenerational network of enduring, caring relationships through which youth can grapple with issues relevant to identifying exploration as well as provide experiences where they can explore personal gifts." 21 . Boyce College students were able to articulate the relationship between resilience and spiritual maturity through the following themes that emerged in. This study examined how the measures of resilience and spiritual maturity were related to freshmen at Boyce College.

Karen Estep says, “The design of the evaluation tools used to assess student learning must match the ministry's goals and desired outcomes. 1 John David Trentham, "The Epistemological Development of Undergraduate Students Before the Ministry: An Interinstitutional Application of Perry's Scheme," (Ph.D. Dissertation, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. The attitude of self-denial is not natural; it must be learned). by the Word of God, the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the help of the religious community.15 The key to this area is for the believer to shift from self-centeredness to God-centeredness.16 Wagoner describes that "the gospel exposes our self-centeredness and creates love in our hearts to others" and even giving one's life for them.17 Submission to the truth leads to greater spiritual understanding and transformation.
