The writer emphasizes that the work of the church is the most critical of all undertakings. With Jesus as the supreme example, it should certainly be enshrined in the culture of the church to be a ministering group.

Recruitment of

By using the element of mystery worshippers, it was the writer's hope to gain input from a perspective without the filter of "perm" that can so easily influence those in a particular church. The process by which this project was completed is presented in the following 15 phases. However, the number of people in the church who knew about this project in its initial phase was intended to be limited so as not to affect the objectivity of the evaluation process.

It was not a binding requirement for the project, but it was hoped that the diversity of participants secured would represent a wide range of perspectives in terms of factors such as age, race, and current involvement in the church. It was the author's hope to secure between 15 and 20 participants for each group of mystery worshippers, resulting in feedback from 30 to 40 first-time visitors over the course of the project.

If you arrived before the service began, someone spoke to you or offered you a seat).

Some questions require very "black and white" answers, such as a "Yes or No" answer.

Attendance of

Mystery Worshippers

A four-month period to complete this part of the project may seem long, but was due in part to the reality that the writer was somewhat at the mercy of the participants. It was also preferable that the presence of these visitors lasted for a sufficient period of time so as not to cause an unusual increase in the number of new guests. As mentioned earlier, the writer's goal was to involve 15 to 20 people in each of the two groups of mystery worshipers.

My plans have changed." However, at the end of the four-month period, the group size goal was met as 18 mystery worshipers attended a service and completed the feedback instrument. Achieving this outline through which feedback was given in respect of all services was not a mandatory requirement in the scope of the project, but it was beneficial, as the aim was to conduct an evaluation that encompassed the whole, rather than only specific services.

A Grade from Group 1

After all Group 1 mystery worshipers participated, a questionnaire was presented to the church on a Sunday morning to seek the "insider's perspective". The questionnaire presented to the church was primarily about the question of "general" hospitality - how they thought a guest would be welcomed by the church as a whole. The author believes that this question may have been the most significant of those asked of the church, as it helped shift the focus of the responsibility of hospitality from a question of everyone's job to an understanding that it is my job.

The old adage recognizes that "everybody's work is nobody's work." This principle certainly applies to efforts at hospitality in the church. After the service in which the church survey was held, one individual told the writer, “I enjoyed answering that questionnaire until I got to the question that asked me to count myself.

A Time of Teaching

It was at this point in the series that the questionnaire referred to in Phase 5 was carried out within the church). If the passion of the church is in step with the passion of its Master, there can be no mistake that people should matter to the church. In the light of truth. that time is short, the church must be faithful in carrying out God's commission to reach out to others.

Included in this must be an uncompromising commitment to showing love to those whom God brings through the doors of the church. The church must be aware of the volume with which the first impressions are conveyed to the guests.

Initial Project Revealed to Church

It is difficult to say that a church is committed to reaching others if it is not committed to showing up. hospitality to those who come to seek. In contrast, when asked what percentage of guests after the service would receive at least an invitation to attend a Bible study, church members speculated almost three times higher than the reality.

Enlisting Members for Follow-Up

For example, if five members who volunteered to help with follow-up each lived within half a mile of a guest, who would be asked to visit. While the writer acknowledges that this may be true in some cases, he believes that in most cases it is not. While some church growth experts have indicated that following up with visitors is not welcome in today's culture, our research indicates that it is critical to both growth and ultimately retention.

While a few churches can boast dynamic growth with little further outreach, their examples are few and far between. This fits perfectly with the goal of using lay people to help monitor their own neighbors.

Development of Mapping Tool

While that was the first filter used when selecting which member to contact a guest, other filters were occasionally needed. Several members were not asked to make direct contact because the intention was not to overwhelm or inconvenience the guest. In such cases, other contiguous filters such as age, presence of children in the home and their age(s), or marital status, to name a few, were taken into account.

And unfortunately, many church leaders have followed these examples with disastrous results in their churches. They are Christian business people who want to improve the ministry of the church.

Recruitment of Mystery Worshippers (Group 2)

Mystery Worshippers

An additional interesting note was the fact that each group included members who represented a perspective of those who were actively involved in the Church, as well as others who were less involved. Five of them acknowledged that their church attendance could best be described by the statements “I go to church occasionally, but not regularly (less than once a month)” or “I rarely or never go to church.” None of the participants in the second group of mystery worshipers reported that their church attendance was sporadic, although 6 acknowledged that their church attendance was less than weekly. From that perspective, the first group appeared to be “less churchy,” but each group contained a broad perspective of both those who acknowledged that they were, and others who acknowledged that they were not, very actively involved in the church.

Final Project Revealed To Church

A second strength of the project was that it focused attention on a subject that is often overlooked in the church. Through this question the fact was revealed that in the first group of mystery worshipers only 2 of the . The Debate Intro: Sports fans can often be found debating

Love your neighbor as yourself (cf. Lev 19:18)

People should be invited to church, and when they come to church, they should be given a warm welcome.

Welcoming Like Jesus

I want your help in determining what kind of "score" you think Antioch deserves in one of the simplest things - helping others feel welcome in the church. Many people will judge Christ by what they see from those who claim to be His people. Understand... We do not emphasize the importance of welcoming simply so that we can influence people to join the church.

We emphasize it because (1) it is the model Jesus gave us, and (2) it will help point people to Jesus.

What Really Matters

The lady lights a lamp and searches the house until what is lost is found. A man had two sons and one of them took his share of the family estate and squandered it. At the end of each of these parables, when what was lost is found, it is considered cause for celebration (vv. 6, 9 and 22-24).

First Impressions

Two of the categories (“Received lesson invitation” and “Received follow-up contact”) asked for a “yes/no” answer. Guests were invited to attend one of the weekend services in Antioch and then provide feedback on that experience. First, a system was developed whereby a group of mystery worshipers assigned a grade to the church based on the hospitality extended to the guests.

The results provided by the second group of mystery worshipers were compared with those of the first group to assess whether progress had been made in improving first impressions and initial hospitality efforts within the church. By doing so, the writer's ambition is for the church to be strengthened and the fame of the Lord Jesus Christ to shine more and more.
