From these theories, according to Linda, grammar is a theory of language, of how language is put together and how it works.4 Jeremy Harmer said: The description of the ways in which words can change their form and can be combined into sentences in that language .5 Based on the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English, Grammar describes the rules for forming words and making sentences.6 The whole system and structure of a language or of language in general, usually taken as consisting of syntax and morphology. .7. The title of the study took “Correlation Study Between Grammar Mastery and Students' Speaking Skills to the Third Semester of English Education.
Speaking
There are also lexical variations: style is a matter of lexis as well as grammar. There are three areas to consider when pronouncing English - apart from speech and volume - that are closely related to meaning.30. The writer concluded that grammar is the way language works through words when speaking or writing so that a language is clearly understood.
According to David Nunan, there are several factors that influence successful oral communication (speech). The author concluded that fluency is the ability of the speaker to express or utter ideas in the form of sentences with limited pause in the utterance. e) Understanding. From the explanation above, the writer concluded that comprehension is the students' ability to understand a task given by a teacher.
The Aspects of Speaking Skill
Comprehension is how students respond correctly and appropriately to a given task. vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.35 Accuracy in speaking consists of the correct use of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. In the activities, the teacher hopes for the correct use of language, but at the same time he wants to encourage the students. they try to use the language they have to communicate. Students clearly transfer many of the speaking skills they have into their own language when they speak English.36 c. Elements of speech.
According to Harmer, the ability to speak fluently presupposes not only knowledge of linguistic features, but also the ability to process information and language "on the spot". There are two elements of speech that teachers should pay attention to when teaching speaking: 1) Linguistic features. Since speaking skills are developed on the micro- and macro-skills of speaking, the tasks used to assess a student's speaking should be developed on the basis of the micro- and macro-skills of speaking. From the theories on the definitions of speech and speaking skills, it can be concluded that speaking skill is an interactive process of constructing and sharing meaning, which includes some skills: using grammatical word classes, system and rules, creating fluent speech, using an appropriate number of words, accurately assessing how the interlocutor understands the other person well and produces correct English pronunciation.
Correlation between grammar mastery and students speaking skill
Previous Research Finding
In her research, the researcher uses quantitative research, correlation research is formed and the research is done in SMPN 2 Babadan. As a result of his research, that grammatical mastery is tentatively related to translation skills, the author believes that grammatical mastery supports the student's ability to translate. Other research was presented by Ana Ayu Farida titled 'The Correlation Between Student Motivation and Speaking Performance of Students to Seventh Grade Students' by SMP N1 Mlarak Ponorogo. In this research, the researcher uses quantitative research and correlation research is formed. and the research is done in SMPN 1 Mlarak.
The result of her research that there is a significant correlation between student motivation and the speaking achievement of seventh grade students of SMP N1 Mlarak Ponorogo. This thesis was edited by Afni Ma'rufah titled "Correlation between Grammar Mastery and Writing Ability for Sixth Semester Students of Department of English Education of State Islamic College Ponorogo in Academic Year 2009/2010". The result of her research is that there is a significant correlation between the mastery of grammar and the writing ability of sixth semester students of the Department of English Education of the State Islamic College Ponorogo in the academic year 2009/2010.
Theoretical Framework
Based on the theoretical background and the previous research finding above, theoretical framework can be described as follows.
Hypothesis
This chapter will describe the methodological steps, includes research design, population and sample, data collection instruments, data collection technique, data analysis technique.
Research Design
In this study, the researcher wants to find out if there is a significant correlation between grammatical mastery and their third semester fluency at state Islamic collage of ponorogo (STAIN Ponorogo) in academic year 2014/2015.
Population and Sample 1. Population
Sample
Limiting the number of researchers requires a researcher to take a sample. The sample is representative of the accessible population, so the knowledge obtained from the sample can be safely generalized to the accessible population.42 This means that the sample is a part of the population that is representative of the research. Probability sampling includes simple random, proportional stratified random, non-proportional stratified random, and area random or cluster random.
Non-probability sampling includes systematic sampling, quota sampling and random sampling, purposive sampling and snowball sampling.43. Random sampling ensures the law of statistical regularity, which states that if the sample chosen is on average random, the sample will have the same composition and characteristics as the universe.44.
Instrument of Data Collection
Technique of Data Collection
Documentation technique is used to find out data from the written documents such as daily notes, transcript, report, books and newspaper. Thus, documentation in this research was used to look for grmmar and speech data scores of UAS in the third semester at the state islamic collage of ponorogo (STAIN Ponorogo) in the academic year 2014/2015.
Technique of Data Analysis
In this research, the data analysis technique used correlation product moment technique. This correlation technique was developed by Karl Pearson, who eventually named the person the correlation technique.49 Since the amount of data to be studied was less than 30 and includes a single data, the formula :50 will be used. Before we analyze the data and define the hypothesis, the data must meet the requirements test which are normality, mean, standard deviation and the last one is Pearson product moment.
After calculating the data, then compare the maximum result of the data analysis with Kolmogorov-smirnov. If r˳ ≥ rt then Ho is rejected / Ha accepted, so unfounded, mean between grammatical mastery and fluency, there is a positive (negative) correlation that is significant. If ro < rt then Ho is accepted / rejected Ha, so baseless, mean between grammar mastery and fluency, there is no positive (negative) correlation that is significant.
