A fair ‘FX’ policy H6 easy answers to gov’t spending question

Th e Indiana U n iversity Faculty C o u n cil deascvs* praiae tor having voted to continue the "F X " policy, and tor it* wtae alteration* of It (•lory on page 1).

Under the policy, a studsnt m ay take again a clam that he o r die tailed, and substitute the second grade tor the t in t T h e t in t grade re

mains on the transcript w ith an denoting its cancellation (hence the term "F X "), but ia not figured into the G ra de Point A v e r s e T h e recommended changes w ill place limits on the num ber of times a m u- dent m ay use the FX option

T h e recom m en da tio Q io U h i council — a system -wide faculty organization — run -coQ fffr to a resolution b y the B loom ington Facul

ty C ou n cil T h a t council resolved that the failing grade be figured into the C . P A A student w h o failed a clam one time and earned an A ” the second w ould have, in effect, a X T to show for all that w o rk

T h e continuance and changes of the p olicy can be seen as agmtfort to maintain a measure of fo rg ive ness in academic policy while m a in taining academic standards

N o student should pay the permanent penalty of a lo w G . P . A . for an occasional failure H a viim to take a d a m again is penalty enough A lte r all, the idea of education is not necessarily to do something right the first time Rather, it ia to learn — to master bodies of knowledge and develop habits of thought, and to make them o n es o w n T o pass a clam after initial failure is an accomplishment and a redemption of sorts. T h e G . P . A should reflect the final success not the mtital failure

A t the same time, the student w h o fails repeatedly — through lack either of discipline or application or of ability — should suffer the consequences. Repeated failures indicate absence of those traits a diplom a is meant to certify.

T h e University Faculty C o u n cil s lim itations on the FX policy hold the middle ground between extremes of laxity and strictness: T h e y maintain rigor w ithout rigidity.

W ith this in m ind, I've been thinking about our 1900 choice for president and his m ajor policy de

-NEED HELP WITH YOUR STUDENT LOAN?

If you’ve attended college on a G uaranteed Student Loan or a National Direct Student Loan made after O ctober 1,1975, consider spending a couple of yeaB in the Army.

If you train for certain specialties, the govern' m ent will release you from 1/3 of your indebtedness (or $1,500, whichever is greater) for each year of active duty.

Obviously, a three-year enlistm ent cancels 100%

of your debt. But if you sign up for the Army’s exclusive two-year enlistm ent option, we’ll still cancel 2/3 of your debt.

Plus, you may be eligible for generous educational incentives. v
