Let a Participial Phrase at the Beginning of a Sentence Refer to the Grammatical Subject
A participle is a verbal phrase that can function as an adjective; eg. contains "Thrown from the second floor, the ball bounced around" the italicized participial phrase. When the participial clause does not refer to the grammatical subject of the sentence, it can be described as dangling and sound ridiculous: "Dropped from the second floor, I saw the ball bouncing around." In this dangling participial phrase, the person, not the ball, is dropped from the second floor.

According to Confucius, "a terrible confusion between who you are and what you want to be" causes stuttering. Worst of the three, this inaccurate version omits the author's name, year of publication, and page number. Although people who stutter may show some excessive anxiety, it "is often associated with speaking and, therefore, there is no evidence for a 'trait anxiety' in most stutterers".
The correct version shows the page on which the quote begins and the page on which it ends. Note: There are different ways to set the name, year and page number. The period is placed only after the closing parenthesis, not before or after the quotation marks.

Dumdum (1992) has stated that “the root cause of stuttering is the lack of a vibrant self-image. It is well known that fluency is a function of the self-image that shines bright light in the eyes of the listener. Therefore, to help people who stutter speak fluently, we must find ways to polish their self-image so that it shines again” (pp. 35-36).
All clinicians should consider this powerful interpretation of stuttering when planning treatment for their clients.

Note that a book such as this does not fully conform to APA style in its headings, paragraph breaks, margins, use of italics and underlining, etc. General design features that are appropriate for an article or term paper may not be appropriate for a book. It has been suggested that echolalia, which is frequently observed in children with autism, may contribute to the reversal of pronouns. I tested this possibility by reducing echolalia with a time-out contingency and by measuring the frequency of pronoun reversal. As the experimental contingency of time-out reduced the frequency of echolalia, the frequency of pronoun reversal also decreased.
Among the many language features of children with autism, echolalia and pronoun inversion are common. Pronoun inversion refers to the frequent replacement of an appropriate personal pronoun with an inappropriate pronoun. Note that journals that claim to use APA style are not entirely faithful to all aspects of that style.
