As with the naming of a racket and a hotel, we inscribe our views and cares for the environment into the cultural facilities around us. The environment permeates society and our treatment of cultural objects reflects back on our understanding of the environment itself.
I have tried to do something different by keeping the theory in the background and emphasizing the details of the cases. In that sense, the chapters are both about the environment and about one way of conducting sociological studies of the environment. The question of the shaping of environmentalism is then developed through investigations of the ways in which environmental campaigning and concerns have changed in response to the globalization of environmental issues.
The book concludes with a separate chapter that does not belong to any of the parts: 'The Value of Environmental Sociology: Towards a Sociology of the Sustainable Society'. Moore and Nicholson suggest that the scientific credentials of the conservation movement give it considerable authority. Using this example, we can return to the question of the character of scientific knowledge.
