CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY
In order to find out the types of idiomatic expressions based on Fernando’s theory (1996) and to identify the translation strategies based on Baker’s theory (2018), this research uses a qualitative method. According to Bryman and Bell (2007:28), qualitative method is a strategy of research to emphasize the words rather than the quantification of the collection and analysis data.
It relies on verbal or non-numeric data as the basis for analysis and research problem solving. The research data is examined with related affective aspects, which are then used as descriptive analysis in terms of providing information and making conclusions to present the data.
The data of this study are obtained from two versions of the novel: the original text in English and the translated text in Indonesian. The origin novel entitled "The Great Gatsby" written in English by F. Scott Fitzgerald. And the Indonesian version with the same title is translated by Sri Noor Verawaty. The data collection will be done by close reading. Snow and O’Connor (2016:1) define close reading as a step to gain understanding that emphasizes the purpose of extracting meaning from a text by carefully examining how language is used in it. Fang (2016:109) states that close reading aims to assist readers in understanding, compiling, talking about, and evaluating complex texts in a thoughtful and critical way.
After close reading, the data will be placed in a table to list what idiomatic expressions are found and determine the types according to Fernando’s theory (1996). Then, the data from the idioms will be analyzed to find out what strategies the translators uses in rendering the idiomatic expressions in the novel by referring to Baker's theory (2018). Eventually, the conclusion will be drawn from the results of the analysis based on the findings of the type of idioms and the translation strategies in the novel.
