INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Kachru (1985) categorizes the use of English into three concentric circles: the inner circle, the outer circle and the expanding circle. He argues that the inner circle represents the more traditional English that was used in places like the United Kingdom, the United States of America. The outer circle included countries that “taught long periods of colonization, mainly by users of the inner circle versions” (Kachru and includes Nigeria, Singapore, and India.

Unlike the outer circle, the expanding circle did not have the same effects of colonization as the inner circle; in the growing circle, English is mainly used for business and international purposes. The growing circle included countries such as China, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and represents the largest growing numbers of English speakers in the world today Crystal (2003). In light of this ever-growing outer circle of English language use, it is conceivable that the continued use of inner circle Standard English as the target of teaching in classrooms worldwide needs to be re-examined and may even be somewhat inappropriate in a global context.
