Upper parts, pale drab gray, somewhat lighter on head, all of the feathers finely vermiculated with buff, brown, or black; feathers of medianpart ofhead with broad black centers, edged with pale cinna- mon; scapulars, black, the inner webs mottled with rufous, the outer

andupper tail-covertswith blackshaft streaks, thelatter with indications of black cross-bars; nape, pale cin- namon; wing-coverts and tertiaries similar in color to the back, the former spotted with buff and pale cinnamon; primary coverts, clove brown, withMarsbrownmarkings on outer webs. Chin, throat, abdo- men, andnarrowlineonforehead,white; lores, anarrow line over and undereye, ear-coverts, andsides ofneck, palecinnamon, with blackand white markings; apatchoffeathersonsidesof throat, cinnamon, tipped withblack; breastandsidesof body, palecinnamon, mixed with white and more or less barred and mottled with black; under wing-coverts, Marsbrown, mottled with black, the innermost feathers,andaxillaries, white. Under tail-coverts, deep brownishbuff; middle tail feathers, drabgray,with fine dusky vermiculations and crossed by about nine irregular blackishbars; nextthree pairsoffeathersmainly blackish on outerwebs and tips (basalthirdmottledwithpalecinnamonandblack), inner webs white, with an oblique black bar near the middle ofthe feather; outer pair of feathers white, with anobliqueblackbaronthe inner webs,and a small mottled patchat tip. Outer primaries, clove brown, witha grayishshadeonouterwebsand tips; a broad white bar across the four outer feathers; inner primaries, clovebrown, with Mars brownmarkings on the outer webs; secondaries, blackish, with whitetips, tingedwithpalecinnamonon the innermost; outer webs mottled withMarsbrown.

This subspecies isclosely relatedto S. cayennends,but issmallerand paler, of clearer color,with darker undertail-coverts.
